Artist’s Block Freebie Winner!

Like many of you indicated in this week’s giveaway, I get over my writer’s block by diving in headfirst and doing something (instead of sitting there waiting for inspiration to strike). Like starting to type a post like this, even when I’m not sure where it’ll end up. Well, I do know that it’ll involve announcing the winner of some kid-friendly, but adult-worthy modern art from Numsi:

And while one of you is about to win $100 towards anything in Numsi’s shop, all of you can score a 15% discount by using the code YOUNGHOUSE now through July 1st. So have fun browsing their contemporary art or even their cards, buttons, clothes, calendars, and more.

But enough chit chat. Let’s get to our big winner. Once I got random.org over its number-generating block, it churned out our winner’s name: Emily L (who cures her creative block with a bit of fresh air). Congrats! Might you be kind enough to share what you’re planning to get with your gift card?

And don’t worry if you didn’t take home the big prize this week. On Monday you’ll have a chance to conquer your creativity block because that giveaway is gonna be up to you to design!

I can’t believe I won! We’re expecting a little girl ourselves in early August, and I’m just starting to pull together ideas for her nursery. My hope is that we’ll have decided on a name early enough for me to get a canvas with her name printed on it to put on a shelf in the room (maybe with the cute giraffe print as well). Thanks again!

I still CANNOT believe you guys just had a baby less than week ago and the blog is rolling along just as before. Congrats again, your work ethic is really inspiring :)

Hey John, I have a question about random.org. Does it just give you a number that you then use to count down to the winning comment? Or is it possible to paste the comments somewhere and have it randomly pick one? Just curious because I would hate to count through thousands of blog comments, and if that is what you guys end up doing, I have to say thank you on behalf of your readers! We definitely appreciate the effort. :D

      Hey Kristi W,

Good question! I use random.org’s random number generator to pick a number between 1 and how ever many entrants there are that week. Then I simply figure out which page of comments that number appears on and count down to the correct comment by hand (i.e. 50 comments per page, so random #75 is 25 spaces down on page 2). So it’s a pretty simple system, actually. At max I’m only counting 25 space (because if it’s #80, for instance, I count backwards from comment 99 on the page). There’s probably even a simpler system out there, but this works for me!

      Thanks for asking!

      -John

Just out of curiosity… How do you check the one-entry-per-email rule you have?

    • says

That’s easy! Once random.org generates a number which corresponds to our winner, we do a comment search for that email address, which will show every post that someone with that email address has commented on. If they’ve commented more than once on that specific contest post, they’re disqualified and we pick another random number via random.org to correspond to another winner. It rarely happens though! Hope it helps.

I just wanted to take a second and thank you for the discount! I waited until today to purchase the “You Are My Sunshine canvas and saved $5.10, which covered my $5.00 shipping fee. Thanks again! You guys are awesome.

Random question, is someone allowed to win a prize more than once? In other words, if I was ever lucky enough to win something, would I be disqualified from entering/winning down the road? Thanks!

      Hey Kate,

If you win a prize, you can’t win the following three (which is easy for us to check since we keep our weekly winner’s info on file). So far no one has ever even won two contests ever (let alone within four weeks) so that’s nice- it seems more fair and balanced that way. You can check out other giveaway info by clicking the link on the bottom of each post. Hope it helps!
