Phuong’s Second Design Dilemma
We couldn’t have been more excited when Phuong and her husband Jeff came back for another mood board after we made over their bedroom (see those photos here). Here’s their letter:
We are once again in need of your help! As for what styles appeal to us, our overall taste is simple and understated focusing on comfort and timeless design (clean lines and contemporary style). In order of preference, we like to shop at Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Room & Board, Crate & Barrel, and West Elm. We don’t use the dining room (too far from kitchen & we have a dining area next to kitchen) so we would be very interested in repurposing that space. We like the two rooms to become one connected space that is inviting, comfortable, and usable. The items that have to stay are the arm chairs, couch, and the window blinds. Everything else (the dining set and other side table are happy to leave). The ceiling lamp can also be replaced. We do want to keep current color which is Benjamin More HC-26 on top and HC-21 on bottom. We really like the look of a room with a neutral background and pops of color. Our biggest problem with the space is that it just isn’t used. Whenever we have guests, people always loiter in the foyer or quickly make their way to the kitchen and family room… we just cant figure it out why and don’t know how to fix it! We cant wait to see what you come up with! – Phuong (and Jeff)

Here’s the plan:

And here’s the new layout suggestion:

Now for the mood board breakdown.
1. Since the wall color and much of the neutral furnishings will remain in the space we’ll be bringing in some deeper mochas and chocolates to complement a lot of the tans and creams while adding a splash of amber-honey and icy blue-gray as our modern and crisp accent colors. Phuong and Jeff will be amazed to see just how much interest and layered style a few items like large patterned area rugs and moody blue curtains will add to the entire space.
2. And speaking of those area rugs, we’d love to see two of these 8 x 10 beauties defining each side of the room for balance and interest without feeling too tame (the asymmetrical pattern and varied tones will really keep things feeling fresh in each of the adjoined seating areas). And since Phuong asked for a coordinating high-traffic-ready rug for the foyer, we love this one by Flor (on sale!) especially laid in a parquet pattern.
3. The long expanse of wall on the left side of the room (to the left of the bay window) is calling out for some art and interest, so we’d love to see a grouping of six to eight of these amazing convex mirrors hung in a nice tight grid (just four or five inches apart from each other and centered on the rug, which should be floated in the middle of that seating area). Oh and here’s a tip, we’ve seen similar versions at TJ Maxx so Phuong might be able to sniff down some cheaper alternatives if she’d like.
4. This soft mocha chaise lounge (in “coffee”) will keep both seating areas open to each other (since it doesn’t have a back to close off one zone from the other) so everyone can mingle and relax together- which will especially come in handy when Phuong and Jeff entertain.
5. This graphic and linear pendant is just the thing to further balance this double entertaining area, so we’d love to see one hanging centered in the middle of the first seating area and another one hung at the same height (again centered) in the second seating area. Keeping things like the pendant lamps and the rugs coordinated (yet interesting, thanks to some pattern and movement) will really tie both areas together so they don’t look like they’re competing, but instead feel like two cohesive zones within one expansive space.
6. Tossing a slew of cozy and inviting velvet pillows (in cream, blue, and honey) in both seating areas will further add layered interest and color throughout the space. We’d love to see one blue pillow on each of the existing armchairs along with a blue pillow and a honey pillow on each end of the existing sofa. We’ll also be introducing a clean-lined sectional (in “Sable”) in the second seating area that we’ll be creating in place of the unused dining zone and we’d also love to see a few cream and blue pillows tossed on that to add balance and seamless style.
7. The back wall (to the right of the bay window) is also calling out for art, and we thought this amazing blue and amber forest print would look stunning. The color palette is perfect and the modern lines of the trees will complement all the crisp furnishings while drawing everyone in from the moment they step in the door.
8. These moody blue velvet curtains (on sale!) are both cozy and luxe- plus they add so much texture and interest while breaking up all the neutral tones in the space. We’d love to see them hung as high as possible inside the bay enclave between each window (for a soft and gauzy effect) and we’d also love to see them hung extra wide- around 18″ past the trim on each side of the windows near the door (to make them look as expansive as possible). As for the height over there, matching the same height as the ones in the bay wndow will keep things nice and balanced in both spaces- so nothing feels lopsided or disjointed.
9. Tossing down two plush and inviting floor pillows in the second seating area (we actually have theses exact pillows in our sunroom so we can attest to their comfort and crisp look) will encourage more casual relaxation and may just turn that ottoman into a game zone during more low key gatherings since people can relax on the sectional and the floor cushions to easily surround a game board. It’s also nice to vary the height of furnishings when there are two seating areas in the same large room- again just to keep things interesting and far from matchy-matchy.
10. Here’s the ottoman that we dug up (on sale!) which is super easy to wipe down- so it’s perfect for worry free entertaining. We’d actually love to see one of them in both seating areas for just a bit more balance (the rugs, ottomans and pendant lights will be the thread that binds each area while things like sectionals and chaises and floor pillows and art differentiate each zone so nothing is too perfect and formulaic. And of course a large tray can be placed on one or both of these ottomans for even more layered interest (and to serve as a place to rest drinks and appetizers). Gotta love a piece that can multitask like that- all while grounding each seating area and adding effortless flow thanks to its corner-less design.
So there you have it. A spacious yet inviting living room full of crisp and clean-lined style. We can’t wait to see what you guys think!
Update: We sadly can no longer find the time to take on client commissioned mood boards (and just whip up general inspiration boards instead) but if we ever reinstate them we’ll make a big announcement!

Oh Sherry I think this is my favorite mood board yet!
I am in love with that rug and the chaise! This will be SO
Amazing!
Phoung where are you from? I will gladly take the dining room set off your hands!!!!!!
Christa – that is exact same thing I was just thinking.
I love the colors. Those are kind of the colors I’m trying to integrate into my living room to brighten it up a bit.
I love this mood board — it’ll be such a great area for entertaining when they’re done!
ooh, I ordered that rug for my living room a few weeks ago, but it’s on backorder until August!
West Elm is doing some lovely “modern-meets-nature” stuff these days, I love it!
o yea yeah, I’m totally feeling this mood board. It’s great. I love how both sides of the room match but are not exact copies. I bet people will want to use them much more now, I know I would!
I am admittedly curtain-illiterate, but what is the best way to hang curtains in a space like the bay window where the walls are angled to one another rather than one flush, flat wall?
Also, I’m curious which sectional color you recommend – maybe chocolate or mushroom? (I think Diplomat is the name of the fabric rather than the color.)
Great mood board – I love the neutrals with the blue.
Hey Shelley,
Here’s a post with more curtain specifics (including how we would treat a bay window). And be sure to read the comments for even more info if you’re still left wondering. As for the sectional color, you’re right, we meant Sable and not Diplomat. Hope it helps!

Maybe I’m dense… I didn’t notice a sectional in the before pictures? Is that an Item they have already purchased, or is it one they have on hand? I dig the baby in the walker in the picture… gotta have those baby gates… we cannot wait to take ours down when our little guy gets a little older! He’s trying to escape the backyard now, gotta run!
Renee- You’re right, there’s no existing sectional in the before pics. We hunted one down for them (and included those details in #6 of the mood board breakdown). Hope it helps!
Laurel- We apologize that we can’t share all the info that our clients provide us with about what they want from their spaces (they fill out a huge questionnaire and we try to boil down their main points to a small paragraph when we share these posts). We would gladly have created a library, office space or art studio in that second living area but they clearly indicated to us that they wanted an extended living space which felt visually connected to the initial seating area near the door. And they definitely entertain regularly so they plan to use both open seating areas quite regularly (so it’ll be full of function and usability for them). Hope that helps!

I love the colors and art, but would have liked to see a more functional floor plan. The owner’s main complaint was that the space wasn’t being used. I don’t see both seating areas being used at a time except once a season for a really large party. Perhaps offer just one cozy seating area, and then repurpose the other side into an office space, library, or art studio that will encourage daily use? Otherwise, it’s stunning work!!
Yes, I am dense… I totally missed it in the break-down! Just saw it as I was mulling through it again!
No worries Renee! It wasn’t in the mood board so we can see how it might have been tricky for ya!

Your space is already incredible but will be even more so when that wonderful mood board is implemented. Oh I hope, I hope, I hope you send after pics, Phuong and Jeff!
That looks great. I looked up that same print on art.com by the artist listed on Zgallerie and it is much cheaper. Just a hint for all those looking at picking that up.
Thanks for the tip Tracie!

I LOVE this mood board! Can’t wait to see the after pictures!!
So pretty, Sherry. Nice work!

Sherry, do you usually recommend using the same patterend rugs like you have here? I have a hallway, living room and dining room that all need rugs and I can’t decide if they all should be the same rug or just in the same color family.
Hey Kristie,
It definitely depends on the situation. If you have an eat in kitchen that opens to a living room it might be nice to have a round jute rug under a round table in the kitchen while there’s a similarly toned (but not identical) braided 8 x 10′ jute rug in the living area. And of course in our house we have a striped jute rug in the kitchen and a patterned yellow wool rug in our adjoined living room so there’s definitely not one “right answer.” Feel free to experiment and see what looks best in your house!

Thanks for explaining! I should have known that you were giving your clients EXACTLY what they want. You’re not one to ever disappoint! :)
Aw thanks Laurel. Glad the extra explanation helped!

The floor pillows are a great idea! And I like the new furniture groupings and the lovely colors in the forest print and also the mirrors a lot, too. I can feel the energy and color quotient going up just looking at those elements on the mood board.
My main thought on seeing this “before” is that I love the floor itself (gorgeous color, etc) and the neutral walls, but wow, no wonder guests make a beeline for the other rooms — they’ve got this big, relatively empty expanses stretching out before them like an ocean, and all they can probably think is: Must make it to shore. Must make it back to civilization.
In addition to the cushions from the mood board, I’d vote for some even bigger cushions of complementary colors to add to the mix — something like a couple of big Moroccan poufs, or heck, some big rubber ball seating:) for added fun and life. Another reason for guests to linger and mix and mingle, but you can shove all those things in a corner or a closet when not needed or if you have too many people in the space at a time (hard to imagine, actually).
I can just see guests moving those cushions around and flopping here or there as it pleases them. It could really warm up the space, and it could be a lot of fun to see how guests use the space and adapt to it, and have the space adapt to them, if given more leeway to experiment.
I’d love to see an “after” picture after the changes are made.
(also, what about adding some plants somewhere to add in still more energy, life and reasons to linger in that entryway? Or do the owners not like plants, or maybe have some pets or kids that should be kept away from plants?)
It looks remarkably. A lot of energy and dynamics!
There is a sectional available at Ikea (Manstad) just like the one posted, but with storage and convertible to a bed. Here is a great link at Apartment Therapy showing all the functionality. My husband and I bought this sofa last year and LOVE the versatility. And (bonus!) they reduced the price for this season!

Thanks so much for the link KB!

LOVE IT! I think the curtains are going to look amazing against the wall color. Most people would have gone for the obvious and added a neutral beige panel. The icy blue gray is going to be the pop of color they were looking for. I love it! Great work!
Thank you for sharing this! I have a brown ‘n blue scheme in my bedroom and have been desperately trying to ‘warm it up’ in there…the icy blue and hazelnut can be a little cool. I’m so happy that these are similar colors so I can borrow some ideas!
I dont know if this has been asked already but where did they get there sofa and chairs from? I LOVE THEM!
Good question Valerie! We believe they’re from Room & Board or Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. Hope it helps!

So excited about the pendant lamp! And lampsplus has a TON of coordinating ones. I’m going to purchase a couple flush mounts. Thanks so much, your mood boards help more than just the clients!!
Hi!
NUMBER 4
I was so excited when I saw this house layout, bc its similar to mine. I did the same thing, I actually bought the Crate and Barrel Simone Daybed to put btw my dining rm and family room. Its big but fits the space perfectly! It creates a seperation without blocking the view. Its really comfortable and looks Amazing!
Can’t wait to see after pics! ps- Tracie, I just checked out art.com, the zgallerie one is actually a much better price… it is twice the size & framed. The one for $50 at art.com is just a 24×18 poster print… thought I would add to that comment, as I was surprised to see that Sherry did not have the best price possible… which of course she did!!
Thanks for the tip Sarah!

OOh. I am really liking the pendant light. Oh and the rug too…
One of the things you’ve done that helps majorly is pulling the furniture toward the center of the room, so its not plastered up against the walls. I’ve heard this is a good idea – but how far do you pull it away from the wall? I’m a commercial architect so I immediately think 3 feet.. but in a small room that would eat up all your floor space. Thoughts?
It definitely depends on the size of the room and even things like the size of the furnishings and the rug(s) so there’s not a hard and fast rule and it’s more about just seeing what looks best. In a smaller room just a foot from the wall can feel amazingly breezy (obviously it wouldn’t create a walkway but it would still let the room breathe). And in larger spaces the three foot distance that you mentioned can definitely work. Hope it helps!

Hi Valerie – Sherry is right, the couch is from MG+BW. Although the chairs are from David Edward (http://www.davidedward.com/)
love the layout
