Help Me Help You
Name that movie. Come on, it’s an easy one. And while we’re on the subject of helping you, we’re here to share yet another way to dig through our archives and find any and all old posts that you’d like to peruse. After all it was one of my 2010 resolutions to seriously supe up the site. I’m not going for anything too techie and weird, just improved function and usability so you guys can find things more easily and click around to your heart’s content. I’m such a guy aren’t I? But I guess it’s all in the name of adding some twenty-ten-worthy simplicity and ease. So here’s the deal:
See that little search box in the top right hand corner of our site? Well there’s a tab there that says “Topics” and there’s where you can find a ton of categories (many of which are brand spanking new) to help you sift through our posts and find exactly what you seek.

You think I’m kidding when I say “a lot of categories” right? Well I’m not. Here are all of the different “buckets” that we have wrangled over 1,200 posts into:
- A Day In The Life

We tried to keep our number of categories down but apparently we gab about a ton of stuff. And above all we want them to be effective so we had to create quite a few in the end. The good news is that you won’t have to sift through five hundred posts in a really vague category (like “Decorating”) and instead we’ve broken things down much further so it’s easier to pin down which bucket to search since they’re a little more descriptive.
So now if you’re looking for a cleaning post, just click on the “Clean Up Your Act” link. And if you want to take some fun quizzes just click on the “Pop Quizzes” category. You’ll see that we also added more detailed topics like “Furniture Makeovers,” “Exterior Upgrades” and “Painting Projects” – so if you’re bored and looking for a quick little DIY dose, those categories (along with “Before & After” and “Decorating Lessons“) are full of ideas and eye candy. And don’t forget to peep topics like “Easy Upgrades” and our latest addition called “Look & Learn” for even more doable (and affordable) ideas and decorating inspiration for the taking.
We also used to just have a category called “Our House” which we manually broke down (yeah it took a while) into every single one of the different rooms in our house. So now you can look at all of our kitchen posts (by clicking Our Kitchen) without having to sift through the rest of the house while you’re at it. In short, whether it’s organizing, saving money or even just flipping through old Design Dilemmas or Reader Redesigns, the topics tab is a great way to hunt anything down (and kill an hour or two if that’s the goal).

And while we’re on the subject of getting around, we also have our often relied on How To page with lots more categories and short linky descriptions to a plethora of posts that just might address your every need (from how to paint cabinets and furniture to how to upholster a headboard, mix up homemade cleaning products, unclog a drain or store everything in your house- even files and receipts- with style).

Plus we can’t forget the “Search” tab that can help you find something faster along with the “Archives” tab which allows you to flip back through our posts chronologically by month (they’re both up there with the “Topics” tab). So here’s hoping that it’s even easier for you guys to hunt down whatcha want watcha really really want. And yes I just got a little Mel B on you right there. You’re welcome.
Oh and on the subject of easier navigation and simpler YHL cruising, do you have any other requests in the functionality department? I can’t promise that I’m savvy enough to implement them all (well, any of them really) but I’d love to hear how you guys think we can make our site even easier to get around.
UPDATE: We’ve since retooled our categories, so some of the links above might not work anymore (since they’ve been updated).

Jerry Maguire. Much as I hate Tom Cruise.
Really, your site rocks. Ever since you refined the search function, I have no complaints.
Thanks for this! How very cool and helpful. I have definitely had some moments of DIY preparations where I think, “Oh wait, what did the youngsters recommend?” And then I go on the hunt for the right tool or tip. This will make it soooo much easier! :)
PS the answer is Jerry Maguire, right??
Thanks for this! I really enjoy the how-to section for inspiration and thought it might be nice if new articles are added here to have an asterisk* or something to denote a new article.
Show me the money!!
I *heart*heart*heart* how easy your blog is to navigate and search. Too many other blogs I’ve tried to look at do a terrible job “laying out their info” (maybe it’s the tools they use…I’m totally not savvy about that???). Their blog might look interesting but you can’t even find all the pics of their house in one place!! So kudos to both of you for the work you’ve done here in that department!
When you click one of those categories though, it only shows a snippet of a post and i still have to go click-clicking around :( With your creative title posts (which are GREAT) i don’t always know right away exactly what a post is about. It would be great if it filtered the whole post. or if there was a viewing choice? Thanks youngsters!
Jerry Maguire!
“You had me at DIY”!
: )
Ok- editing my post above- i see there are little snippets on what each post is about..but i still remain with my previous asks…i like to see pictures ;)
Breaking down the posts by room is an excellent tool! Now I’ll know just how to get to all of your tips on your bathroom project or kitchen project. <3 you youngsters!
Thanks for tossing out those suggestions guys! We’ll definitely do what we can to see if we can make them happen. Admittedly I’m not the brains of that operation (that’s all John) but barring any technical issues (like the site crashing repeatedly) we’ll do our best to put your ideas into action! Fingers crossed…

Whoa. Now THAT’S dedication. Color me impressed!
Awesome! Thanks a bunch!
I just love what you’ve done with the site, it’s so much easier to find the different posts you are looking for. Don’t get me wrong, your site is amazing but you have managed to make it even better!!
ok you’ve outdone yourselves now. i’m so impressed.
and i’m so stoked that you’re showing all of the nursery stuff, as i’m a bit behind you, with our baby due August 6!
thanks for sharing all of this with all of us.
Jerry Maguire! Too easy. :)
others said it–Jerry Maguire!
Anyhoo–there is something I’ve been meaning to ask ya’ll to consider! On your House Tour Page, (I think that’s the one!) I love how you have Before and Afters. However, I was wondering if you would consider adding links for each room to the older posts that you already did in the past of the “durings.” My reasoning is this: you’ve been working on your house for a while now, so to jump right from “before” to “now” is a bit daunting for those of us whose homes are still SOLIDLY in the “before” state. It’s SO encouraging to see how you made-do and IMPROVED almost the entire house right away, without blowing the budget–kind of like those magazine features that i’ve seen with “3 stage makeovers” and that sort of thing. For instance, i’d love to see easily accessible links for your kitchen & bath “before,” “during,” and “now”–not even necessarily “after.” it’s so encouraging to see that even people with such a GORGEOUS house like you have, are constanly evolving and improving. it also helps those of use who have no imagination, and no budget–to see how you immediately made low-cost changes that improved the house right away! easy to find links of the metamorphosis would be wonderful :-)
thanks for considering!
Great idea heyruthie,
It’s actually one of the reasons we broke down the old “Our House” category into each room by room bucket. So people who wanted to see how our kitchen or our bathroom really evolved over time could thumb back through those posts. We’re not sure if there’s a way to inject that feature into the How To page (since that section is pretty cluttered up with links already) but we definitely know that people love to see a slow evolution (which is a lot less daunting than a big presto change-o) so we’ll put our heads together to see how else we can share those details. For now at least you can click on each room’s topic tab to see how they’ve changed one by one. Hope it helps!

love the new renovations! you did such a great job organizing without changing too much and freaking people out. but i wouldn’t be a loyal friend if i didn’t say… “you’re welcome” instead of “your welcome”! i know you two love grammar as much as i do, hope you don’t mind. ;)
Now that’s just embarrassing. All fixed!

I second heyruthie’s post. However, I just used the search tab to find a picture of your kitchen prior to the big overhaul. I remembered liking your floors for an easy fix.
As for me, may I suggest tidying up the right hand side? I know you guys gotta have’em, but all those ads are very messy. I tend to avoid even looking in that area because it seems so very disorganized. I know chances of them leaving are slim to none (sponsors are important) but maybe you guys could add a tab up top for “as seen on” and “what we’re digging” instead of these space hogs off to the side? It’s overwhelming. Also, placing sponsors together would be nice and cohesive. Like tile and stone resources together, art and frames grouped, jewellery , decor items etc. Don’t get me wrong, your site is lovely. In fact, at the top on the right hand side, it’s starts off real nice, but by the bottom of it, it’s all cluttered. (You said you guys were spring cleaning, right?)
P.S. Jerry Maguire – great movie :)
Thanks for the continued suggestions guys! We’re all about cleaning things up and making it even easier to cruise around. Of course our sponsors have to stay (they pay the bills and keep our site up and running- plus they dole out a lot of great reader discounts) but we’ll do our best to keep things as streamlined as possible!

Looking great – I love organization! I guess my only suggestion would be to break the categories into smaller subsections (Like “Our House” which will then have links to your kitchen, bathrooms, etc OR “Decorating” which will have links you already created to the moodboards, tips, etc.). I think right now with that many categories (which is great but hard to sift through) and with the unique names you give them (which I also like but might lead readers to not look under the letter they think it will be under) it is very hard to find specifically what you’re looking for. If you took all the links under Topics you have now and sort them into Broader categories, it would be easier to navigate. Does that make sense?
It totally makes sense! In fact John recently mentioned that he’d love to do the same thing (have bigger categories with subcategories) but we went back and forth about whether that was easier because now you just click “Our Kitchen” instead of having to click “Our House” and then scroll through over ten rooms to find “Our Kitchen.” We also don’t have a clue how to create subcategories… hence the introduction of this Topics feature without them. But who knows what we’ll do down the line! Thanks so much for your feedback!

Great site enhancement! Thanks — it’ll make finding stuff I can only half remember THAT much easier.
I have no suggestions. I just realized it’s been a long time since I said what a great job you do on this site and how much I love reading your blog. Thanks!
I am with you. I am organizing my closet last two hours and just sat to have a break and found this posting :-).
I love the changes! I seem to average a decent amount of time searching your site, now I can kiss my afternoon goodbye! Thanks!
Love those changes! Especially the breakdown by room. Thanks for doing that!
Love your changes! One thing I would personally find very helpful is if you could maybe further divide your mood board category into rooms as well (just like your house). So when I’m looking for some inspiration to change up let’s say our dining room I could easily pull up all the dining room mood boards you guys have done in the past.
Great idea! Keep ‘em coming guys! We definitely plan to brainstorm every single tweak we can (hopefully) make later on tonight and form a nice little game plan to put them into effect! Then it’s off to organize those closets on Saturday morning…

I would love to have the link to buy your design services in a faster to get to location. Maybe it’s just me but frantically scrolling through your before and after pictures every week somehow makes it more disappointing when I find out you’re already sold out. Nothing major, maybe just a little “I can’t get up early enough on a Monday morning” angst coming through. :)
Beyond that, I can’t think of anything that would substantially improve the functionality of your blog. You guys do a great job, thanks for all the hard work!
Hey Bri,
We can tell you that we put our mood boards up for sale at around 8am EST so that might help you know when to squat and snag one. They usually sell out within sixty seconds (crazy, we know!) so it helps to just get there a few minutes early and just keep refreshing until the “sold out” message disappears and you can click the “buy now” button to grab one. Hope it helps!

Nice improvements. Organizing a site with as much info as yours in a way that makes sense is daunting, but you guys have done a great job. I never have trouble finding what I need, and now it will be even easier! Thanks so much!
My guess: “What About Bob”. When Dr. Leo Marvin is working with Bob at the beginning of the movie. (Love that movie.)
K, now I’ll go read the rest of the post. :o)
Cute, I love the drawer liners!
The Sunroom link is the one I’m most interested in but that link seems to be broken. I’m looking to add on a sunroom which will become my crafts room.
Hey EvaBabeDesigns,
It’s working for us on both of our computers (both from the list in the post above and the Topics tab that we pointed out up by the search bar). Is anyone else having an issue with the links? Perhaps you’re confused about how it works. It takes you to a list of all of our old posts about the sunroom, so you can click through them or scroll back to read things from the beginning. Hope it helps!

You guys have the most organized, best looking, easy to navigate blog out of any of them out there. It’s one (out of lots) of the reasons why it’s my favorite. My only complaint was that it’s hard to find things…annnd, you just fixed it. I’m stoked.
Keep up the great work!
Love the site, youngsters! And have to second (third, hundredth?) the sentiment that your blog is far more navigable than some of my other daily blog reads. We readers sure do appreciate the hard work! I’d love to see a link to your moodboard flickr page on the side bar (kinda like the house crashing link). I love to peruse the pics and get inspired – you two have done a wonderful job!
Great idea! Thanks so much for chiming in. You guys are the best.

Haha– I totally entered my Jerry Maguire answer in another post by accident and was all proud, thinking that I was the only one who knew! Silly me….
Went to one of your categories – Easy Upgrades – and was frustrated that I had to hit “next page” to get to the next page instead of being able to scroll down to see all the links and descriptions.
Being able to scroll a page is much faster than hitting next page. I love your site and look at it almost daily for inspiration and entertainment. (We have a 1960s ranch house.)So the next page thing was a major dissappointment.
Any way to change that?
Sadly we messed around with that a lot and couldn’t change it at all. So sorry to disappoint!
xo,
s
Thanks for answering. So no way to make it like the How To section? Darn.
Sadly it’s formatted in a totally different way than our How To page so we don’t have nearly the amount of control that we have on those types of pages (it’s a glorified auto-search function, and our pages are much more programmable). So sorry! We wish we could help! Maybe someday there will be a plug-in that we can apply. Fingers crossed…
xo,
s
You two already had the most organized and navigable site – who knew it could get even better!
One thing I have noticed lately is that some of the sites on your blogroll are no longer being updated or have been renamed…maybe it’s time for a little spring cleaning on that list as well.
YHL (well, it was called something a little different then) was my first blog read and will always be my favorite! Thanks for all your hard work!
So true! We definitely have to clean out our Link Love section (it’s just so hard because we don’t want to offend!).
xo,
s
UPDATE: We went through all of our Link Love urls and pared down any that weren’t updated very regularly. Now it should be even easier to peruse the sites that we love and visit often! Hope it helps.
I’m one of those hopeful Monday early-risers (4:30 a.m. my time) who rushes to the computer to see if I can log on fast enough and click the “buy now” before the zillions of others do. Maybe it’s my computer but . . . when I go to that page, it loads more slowly than your other pages–on Mondays especially. Might be helpful if the before/after picture and text were not loaded on that page and we could go straight to the “buy now” button? You said earlier in this post that those two spots are taken in 60 seconds! that’s awesome!
i really love your site you two! and i am really proud of you for embarking on this blog to make it work ($$) for you!
these changes are fabulous and your humor and optimism throughout your blog is appreciated :)
keep up the good work!
No suggestions, just wanted to say thanks for enormous amount of effort put in to reorganize it like that! Very dedicated.
I love your site and have used it a few times to help me decide on paint colors. In fact, I was as the paint counter at Home Depot tonight (near the Chesterfield Mall) and saw you both walk by!! I was too far away to say hi, but if you noticed someone quietly geeking out by the paint counter…that was me!
Thanks for your awesome blog. Tonight I bought Fresh Guacamole from Glidden to liven up our office. :)
That’s too funny! We would have loved to say hello. We practically live there so it’s a wonder you haven’t seen us there sooner. And good luck with Fresh Guacamole. Sounds yummy!

I have just recently discovered this blog and am now totally addicted! I love, love, love everything about it! Oh btw, you two are just the cutest! Thanks for sharing all your fabulous ideas!
Hey guys! Once again you’ve popped up on Apartment Therapy; or rather their baby site, Ohdeedoh. Here’s the link!
http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/decorative-accessories-pillows/lining-drawers-110472
So exciting! Thanks for the heads up. Off to check it out…

Just wanted to say that:
A.) The sunroom link works for me (mac/firefox)
B.) You guys are the best…ever.
C.) You are already so great that I almost don’t want to make suggestions because it would push you into perfect-land and then I will have to hate you.
But if I was going to suggest something, it would be to have room categories listed: kitchen, bathroom, etc. Then it would pull of all the kitchens (yours, reader redesigns, house crashing, mood boards, blah blah). Because for me, there is usually a certain room I am working on/looking for inspiration for…I am not picky about which of your fabulous topics/posts it comes from as long as it is about a kitchen, ya know?
Then again, that may be what the search function is for…
We definitely have a lot of brainstorming to do thanks to everyone’s suggestions. We really appreciate all the ideas. You’re helping us help you even more.

I love you site; however, I only discovered it recently after buying a house of my very own. The new search features are a fabulous addition to the site. Thanks for including them!
Love visiting, not sure if it is just me, but site is taking longer to load with all the sidebar things added in
:(
Anyhoo…finally caught up on all your videos…too fun…thanks for all the fun ideas..on teh hunt for a new home and eager to incorporate lots of these ideas when I do :)
Hey Erika,
So sorry to hear that you’re having a sidebar loading issue! Our site itself is loading really quickly (we can monitor the load time through our hosting server and it’s down at it’s usual number) but it’s just that we’re having a slight glitch with the coding on one of our sidebar ads (so while the rest of the site loads, the sidebar can take a while to catch up for some people). Not to worry, we’re on the case- and we hope to have it worked out soon! One way to speed things up in the meantime seems to be refreshing the page (which sometimes helps to “unstick” the sidebar so it reloads faster the next time). Again, so sorry for the trouble- and thanks for the heads up!
xo,
s
I think your site has been very easy to navigate- I’ve been using the Topics tab, the How To, and the search bar the most often and I usually can find what I need pretty quickly. You really have amassed quite an archive by now!
Whoa. Now THAT’S dedication. Color me impressed!
OMG! Love your blog!! I had actually seen pictures of your great talent and transformations on your home in other publications. But it was not until I purchased the Better Homes and Gardens Big Style for Small Rooms publication that it mentioned your blog! Your ideas and talent are amazing, do not know why HGTV has not picked you guys up for a television series! I noticed you are also doing design consulations and I was wondering if you will also assist with long distance advice? My family and I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. :)
Long distance consults are actually our specialty. Just click the “design advice” tab under our blog header to learn all about it. So glad you found our blog!

Your site is fabulous. A friend suggested this site and I immediately became hooked. Thanks for pointing out the “search” area. I am working on my Baby S ( expecting a girl) nursery, I am due in May. So, your nursery tips have inspired me to search for bargains and also create a safe, environmentally friendly place for my little one. Thanks for all your great advice.
This is completely off topic, but I saw this chihuahua pillow on etsy, and thought of you guys (and the beanette): http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=36994982
So cute! Thanks so much for the link.

John, you worry me. Because according to your post, I, too, am a guy. And that would be really, very bad news for my husband.
P.S. He hooked up our new cable box the other day. Huge smile. Asked, “When’s the last time you saw me do something like that?” My answer? “1991.” That is, of course, the year we were married. At which point I became the tech guy, despite being a girl, and have hooked up all tech stuff in the house ever since, except during a brief six month period where I was too pregnant to fit behind the entertainment center, and we had to do without surround sound until I delivered.
