Pop Quiz: Hue-man Resources
Ever thought your favorite colors could help you pick a career path? Well, we never did either until one of our readers (thanks Helen!) sent us a link to CareerBuilder.com’s “Color Career Counselor” quiz. It claims to use the Dewey Color System (which is referred to as “the world’s most accurate career testing system”) to point you in the right occupational direction, simply by predicting what may interest you most depending on which colors you like (and which ones you like the least).
As usual, Sherry and I took it for a spin. Sherry’s results said she’s primarily an ORGANIZER and secondarily a RESEARCHER. Some of the highlighted keywords – Systematic, Self-Control, Self-Motivated and Independent – certainly describe my better half, though the suggested career paths (Accountant? IRS Agent?? Budget Analyst???) involve far too many numbers for her. I think she prefers her own interpretation- that she enjoys organizing closets and drawers between researching furniture options for mood boards and whipping up posts about our progress at home. Plus you know we like to research every major DIY project before diving in so it’s not too far off in that regard…
My results, however, were far more accurate. I was said to be a CREATOR first and an ORGANIZER second. Although I might not be as “nonconforming” or “emotional” as they indicate, the first career listed is what I actually do for a living: Advertising Executive (and oddly enough, Interior Decorator is also on the list). Who knew my preference for blues and my aversion to reds said so much about me?
Now it’s your turn to take the quick test (just click here) and tell us how accurate you think the results are. Oh, and it’ll probably ask you to provide some personal information but you can just click “No Thanks” and skip that page without compromising your results. Have fun (who doesn’t love a pop quiz on Monday morning?)!

I got creator first and organizer second.
In fact, I’m a psychiatrist, and I studied Math in college.
And I love my job.
But I always kind of wanted to be an architect, and I love, crafts and design, and your blog. So, who knows?
I am a creator first and a persuader second. Both area pretty accurate! :)
That’s freaky.
I got Creator and Persuader. I have a degree in theatrical design. Those are the two requirements of the job.
I tried it a second time with my email address, and it still didn’t work. Oh well!
i’m sure the quiz is highly scientific and i shouldn’t read too much into it…but now i’m slightly depressed that i while i am an accountant, the quiz tells me i’m a “creator” and should be doing photography or web design or something artistic/creative (all things i enjoyed when i was younger). i mean, i like my job and all. and i am a very organized person. but perhaps this is why i spend my free time looking at design blogs and trying to make my house look pretty? :)
That is too funny. The first 4 listed career paths are previous or current job titles I’ve held. I’m an organizer first, and persuader second. If that isn’t the most bang on, accurate quiz I’ve ever seen, I don’t know what else is.
Also, the last question where you list the colors in order of which you like the most, I realized I put them in the order of the rainbow. That must be why I was selected as organizer ;)
Mine were so right! I’m a creator and a doer – it says I can be a lawyer or an interior designer, but that I need to work hands-on with people. Love it! Thanks for the brain candy!
I got the same as Sherry- Organizer and Researcher. Not surprising since my work area MUST be neat and organized, as well as my home, or I can’t function! As far as the career choices, I’m not so sure. I’m a Nurse so I guess I need to be organized and a “researcher.” Fun quiz, thanks for sharing!
Hmm I’m an “organizer” and “persuader”. I’m in the same boat as Sherry – I like practical organization and I like things to line up and what not, but I am SO not a numbers person. I felt closer to “persuader” until they made it out to be someone obsessed with success and climbing to the top and being a corporate leader. Both suggested working in large companies, which sounds terrible to me!
Oh well, it was fun anyway. Maybe there is SOME grain of truth in there somewhere :)
Mine was a total miss. It showed me to be creative. The most creative thing I do is to research blogs for good ideas to copy.
In real life, I am an accountant.
Mine had me pegged- researcher and social organizer. Best fits are the job I have- teacher, particularly science. Weird!
wow, mine was absolutely correct! i got creator and persuader. fits me so exactly :)
Any idea how to take the quiz and get results? I took it twice …..
If you scroll up you’ll see that others had the same issue so we threw out two suggestions. Hope they help!
xo,
s
I am the same as John – “Creator” followed by “organizer”. It couldn’t be more spot on! I work in advertising and compulsively organize.
I got the same ones in the same order as Sherry. This was fun!
It keeps coming up blank for me. I even used an email address to no avail. I guess I’m too weird. :]
Interesting. I got Organizer (Self-Control, Practical, Self-Contained, Orderly, Systematic, Precise, and Accurate) and Persuader (Witty, Competitive, Sociable, Talkative, Ambitious, Argumentative, and Aggressive).
I’m an attorney, so I’m quite pleased with the results!
Darn! I went all the way through the quiz, only to land a blank white screen. Now every time I go back, it takes me to that screen, rather than to start the quiz over.
Of course, I’m freaking out because I want to know the results so much.
I suppose I can self categorize myself as OCD, for now. haha.
I am also one of the bummed. I have now tried the quiz five times, two browser, with and without a valid email address. The javascript indicates it is processing, but I am returned to the beginning of the quiz. No email has been received with results either.
boo! I wanna know! lol!
A-MAZING!!!! It hit me almost perfect!! Thank you so much for this!!
Oddly enough I just took that quiz yesterday! I’ve recently taken a break from school (I was in my fourth year and wasn’t sure I was on the right career path for me)so I’ve been looking for little quizzes here and there like this to see what my strengths are and to help me think of other career options. I got the same results as Sherry and I’d like to say they are pretty accurate. Although, I’m with ya on the jobs involving numbers… can’t say I’d be a good accountant!
Right on! It said Organizer and suggested I should go into accounting, perhaps CPA — and thats exactly what I am. Guess I have the right job! I’ll leave the creative stuff up to you!
How fun, thanks for sharing.
Creator/Persuader here.
I would say the quiz is pretty dead-on.
I have had jobs in three of the fields listed as suggested occupations.
1st was Creator, 2nd place was Persuader. I’d say that’s pretty accurate, as I have a very flexible job that allows me to be creative daily (I make maps), and I definitely like to get people on my side, haha! Plus one of them said work in public relations and I work in local government. Cool test!
I finally got it to give my results!!! I am the same as John, creator and organizer. It dead on with both (except for the whole numbers thing). Too bad I don’t work in any of the fields it listed, but I do enjoy many of them as hobbies.
CRRREEEEPPPYYY!
That was so crazy! Right on!
Very fun! Looks like I’m a “creator” first and a “persuader” second…which I suppose makes sense as I’ve followed this second attribute in my career as an attorney and the first in my hobby as a design enthusiast!
Interesting. I felt my second choice was much more in tune with my personality but very interesting tool.
My description was pretty spot on: Organizer and Doer. While my apartment isn’t always organized, I’m a left-brained CPA at an accounting firm. And I can be pretty thrifty and practical, like waiting to buy things on sale.
Your unofficial Western Virginia Design Commentator is 1) CREATOR and 2) SOCIAL MANAGER – love it.
Mine was bang on: Creator. A couple of my suggested occupations were Public Relations and Broadcaster. I’ve done both!
Tried a second time and it is AMAZING! Has me pegged as Organizer – even had my occupation correct (administrator) excepat I’ve been in a “one girl office” rather than the corporate setting they said. Thanks for the fun!!
I’m an Organizer Creator. :o) It works well for motherhood, methinks. lol Later in life I’ll do something high-powered and precise.
Hah! Terribly, horribly wrong. It had me as a creator, social organizer. Um, no. I’m creative in that I sew, knit, etc, but from patterns only. Stray from the pattern and I’m totally lost. And social organizer is my idea of the 7th ring of He!! I was an engineer before I was a mommy so um, social, no.
I’m a Creator then Organiser as well John which is pretty accurate considering I’m a graphic/web designer and love decorating my home!
Creator/persuader here. Pretty accurate. I would love to do most of the jobs listed under creator, I would just need to go back to school…
That’s really cool. I am a Creator then an organizer..(funny thing, I re-organized my closet today)The Creator part was right on, nonconforming & impulsive…I’ve been accused of being that.
I got Creator/Persuader. Which is actually perfectly accurate, since I’m a photographer – I have to be creative, obviously, but I also have to be good about marketing my business and selling prints and things. So yeah…pretty spot on!
I’m primarily a creator and secondarily a persuador. Pretty much describes me, and the suggested jobs all sound great. I wish I had studied Interior Design! But I just noticed last year (while writing my Bachelor Thesis)how much I love decorating and interior design. Oh well.
Wow, I must be bad at picking colors–it said I am a “doer” and an “organizer” and that I’d be good at hands-on construction work or account-related fields. Definitely NOT me! Maybe all of those colors on a computer screen are just too overwhelming;-) Fun quiz to take though!
I got organizer and doer … sounds about right.
I’m the same as Sherry. I’m a school librarian so I do have to organize and research everyday. I have never been good at math, so I feel like the research choice is much more like my personality. Very fun!
That’s amazing! My was Organizer and Researcher and I’m both for sure. I’m a scientist and research is my game. Also, I’m in LOVE with my label maker and use my organizing skills at both home and at my last lab job. Cool tool!
CREATOR/RESEARCHER
I’m a financial/insurance coordinator for a dental practice, but my side hustle is voice-overs!
Doer/social manager- I was surprised that this test was so accurate…I’m a ballerina and I couldn’t believe that my profession was listed (professional athlete or dancer) and in the same category as my husband’s (engineer). Who knew? I love beautiful design and I don’t mind executing a good idea, but I’m not so great at planning without a little help- hence faithfully following this blog!
I am an ORGANIZER too! Being open to a new career, I found the job choices depressing. Glad you are able to do something not quite as depressing as IRS agent or statistician!
Guess what – I know you’ll be shocked – I was the same as Sherry ;) Organizer. I felt the same about the job suggestions, though. Where’s the creative outlet?! I need art & beauty… I’d suffocate as an accountant.
I was a “persuader” next. I think this is very true. I’m the visionary that ropes other in with my enthusiasm. Ask Sam :)
Great quiz guys,
I came out a creative persuader… and the jobs they listed were all jobs I’ve dreamed about doing (hello architect and advertising!)and even the job I am thinking of going to night school for, interior designer!
I found it funny that one of the suggested fields was package designer, and I work for a packaging company, just far away from design, maybe that’s why I’m so bored here!
John, I got the same results as you. Although, I’m not an ad. ex. Your job reminded me of “Mad Men”. =) Have you ever seen that? I’m a recent addict.
Hey Karli,
Yep, Sherry and I have watched the first season of Mad Men but haven’t made it past that yet. Sadly (or maybe luckily?) things aren’t anything like that any more. For one, a lot more work gets done and there’s far less smoking in the office!
-John
The Color Counselor suggested 1) I’m a CREATOR. And 2) SOCIAL MANAGER. Sadly, I opted out of giving my email addy so I missed out on the full report. But initially, my colors have me pegged! Happy Tuesday. =)
