Love Letters
Well this Sunday is Valentine’s Day, and while we don’t usually spend a lot of money or do anything too major we do like to take a moment to be sweet to each other- especially when doing something like exchanging heartfelt cards or enjoying a low key dinner doesn’t cost very much at all. And this year John actually had a super cute (and free) idea that not only gave us something to do this year but also something to look forward to next year. His big concept: let’s write V-day letters to each other that we can’t open until February 14th of 2011.

I immediately loved the idea because so much will change in the next year (we’ll be bringing home our first baby in May so we’re sure we have tons of memorable milestones and life-changing adventures ahead of us). We think it’s sweet that this do-not-open-til-next-year V-day letter will be a time capsule of sorts, full of all the excitement and anticipation of things to come. So that’s what we’ll be doing (along with dinner and a movie at a fun eat-in theatre).
And while we’re on the subject of love letters, we adored this amazing DIY idea that we saw over on This Home Sweet Home:

It’s actually a print you can buy from Pearl and Earl but we think it serves as great made-it-myself inspiration since anyone can take a meaningful poem, song lyric, love letter from the past, or any other grouping of meaningful words and type them out in a simple typewriter font (hint: try Courier). The combination of the white paper with the white mat and the white frame is lovely to us, but of course you can alter those elements to work with your home’s aesthetic (wouldn’t a navy mat and a dark brown frame look handsome in a deep and moody bedroom?). Heck, you can even change the color of the font and the paper (soft cream letters on tan stationery would look pretty cool). So we just thought we’d pass that along since we obviously have love letters of all kinds on the brain for V-day this year.
But what’s on your mind when it comes to the impending pink-heart-riddled holiday? Do you celebrate V-day? Do you hate it? Do you use it only as an excuse to eat too many fancy chocolate truffles? Do you remember when you used to hand out those paper Valentine’s cards at school? I do, my mom made me give them to everyone so I didn’t exclude anyone, which would have been nice except that I was mortified because boys were gross and had cooties. Oh those were the days.
Psst- Looking for more Valentine’s day projects and ideas? Check out this post full of fun little romantic suggestions and this post all about what I got John last year for V-day. Oh and here’s what John got me in return (gotta love a scavenger hunt).

after two snow days and a sick kid day last week, I almost forgot about Valentine’s Day, until my youngest brought home her candy and card stash (she even shared a few Hershey’s Kisses with me, yum!)
Tomorrow, we’ll probably either either cook a meal together after the kids go to sleep, or have take-out (Indian or Thai). During the day, we have some DIY projects around the house to work on (one of the best kinds of togetherness :)
The Hubs and I try to do Valentine’s Day as cheap as possible every year. We go out every other year and on the other years we take turns making each other dinner at home. Lucky for us, we have a Gift Card to one of my fave restaurants that we saved from Xmas so we are going to use that. This year is really special b/c we get to tote our 13 1/2 month Son along for the meal. Happy Heart Day Petersiks!
My husband is the most romantic guy on Valentines day. He listens to me all year long and some how comes up with some really great surprise. Our first Valentines day was sweetly planned, he had surprised me with roses, a diamond eternity necklace and a special dinner at a fancy restaurant however when we got to the restaurant everything was covered in chocolate- the duck, the appetizer….it was so gross we had to laugh. I am so excited for today, we are celebrating today because he is leaving on business tomorrow morning and he has planned a day full of surprises- first this morning one for my son and I and then for just the two of us this evening. He truly is the love of my life!
Just found your blog today and I love it! Both of you are truly inspiring and should be so proud of all you accomplish! Your home and family are beautiful!
Oh and I love the song playing in ‘buidling the bean’s crib’ I searched for the artist/song on your blog, but couldn’t find it. Wondering if you could share…
Thanks!
Michael
Thanks so much! So glad you found us! There’s actually a link at the end of the video that will take you to that artist’s page. Hope it helps!

Happy Valentine’s Day to a fabulous couple!
v-day letter for next year…
very good idea !!!
Thank you so much for posting this!!! I spray painted a wooden frame white (it had a white mat) and printed off excerpts from my journal from when we were FIRST getting to know each other… my husband loves it! It turned out better than expected. Thanks again for the great, inexpensive, and meaningful idea. :) Keep up the good work!
Just popping in to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day!

What a wonderful idea! Sort of like a Valentine’s Day Time Capsule. So much fun. I think I’d have a hard time waiting to open it, though. I’m all about instant gratification!

Recently I was remembering how much fun Valentines Day was when I was a kid. We used to make mailboxes from paper plates that we decorated with all sorts of red, and pink odds and ends. We taped them to the side of our school desks for everyone to put the Valentine cards in. I wish I had kept one of them. Like your mom I had to give a card to everyone in the class. We always had special cupcakes too. On another note – I met my husband by writing letters to him first. A college friend knew us both and suggested we write to get to know each other. We lived in different states. We did, fell in love, got married, and have lived happily ever after with two daughters.
I have kept all the letters and will probably pick a fav to frame. Thanks for the inspiration.
My best- Diane
What a great idea!!! I love simple things that come together to make something just perfect.
Thanks so much for the great DIY idea. My husband and I are closing on our first house in less than two weeks so Valentines Day was the last thing on our minds. We don’t get sentimental very often, but this was an awesome (and free) way for me to take a minute to think about all we’ve been through and capture the excitement of moving into our first home. Better yet, he loved it. So thanks again. Here’s how it turned out: http://chrisandrobinsnest.blogspot.com/2010/02/sappy-valentines-day.html
Our day was low key, but have you seen Kelly Diels’ “Operation Secret Valentine”? What a fabulous piece this e-book is. Although the Valentine’s themselves are powerful enough, each in their own way, she then created wee works of art for each one to be set it. Ever the sucker for layout, each page was a visual gem!
Whoops, I didn’t include a link! Doh!

I didn’t want to post again in the Fab-Freebie, but I had typed my favorite phrase/word in Korean, but the characters didn’t show up… However, I did find a print from Grace Hester Designs that shows it. =) Just wanted to put it out there.

And ironically, it fits your Love Letters post. =]
BTW, I have the ceramic compost keeper you guys have listed in your “digging” section and I LOVE it! We made a little compost section in our back yard this keeper is such a cute way to keep food until we can bring it out there.
FYI, our local co-op sold it MUCH cheaper than any of the online versions we found :-) I believe we got it for less than $20.
What a great V-day gift idea! Something great to look forward to!
My husband and I celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary on September 13th. I liked the traditional “paper” gift idea, but had a hard time coming up with something special. Until, I decided on a letter a month, to be opened on the 13th of each month for a year. It’s so much fun. We sit down and open it together and it’s a great time to reconnect!
Thanks for your blog!! We recently bought a house and will be tuning in daily for some great ideas!
My husband and I have been together for seven years. One tradition we started when we first started dating was we went to those $4 photo booths in the malls and got our pictures taken. It’s a cheap and cute idea and it’s great looking back on the photos after the years have gone by and seeing the changes!
I love that Pearl & Earl print!
Do you have any other links for any cute romantic Etsy art or others?
Thanks :)
Hey Andrea,
We shared another lovey dovey print that we actually own (which says You & Me) in our big romantic art & decor roundup earlier this week so you might want to follow that link to check out their other sweet posters. Oh and check out our most recent mood board for another cute Etsy print. Otherwise if you search “love print” on Etsy we’re sure you’ll find a lot of cute stuff! Happy hunting…
