Reader Redesign: Just Add Water
When Samantha over at one of our regular blog reads sent us an amazing armoire redo (just wait to see what she turned it into), we had to share her insanely inspired DIY undertaking. Here’s her letter:
It’s probably too late in the year for an outdoor space before and after, but here’s our armoire-to-fountain makeover. The outside of the fountain is painted with weather-resistant paint. The inside tanks are coated with roofing sealant. The fountain pump is from Home Depot. It makes a wonderful refreshing sound that drowns out the traffic and (almost) the constant helicopters that hover overhead every evening. – Samantha
That’s right. She turned her old pine armoire into a fountain! Here’s the before:

Wow, that is absolutely amazing and totally unbelievable. How imaginative. What a great way to repurpose something you can’t quite part with.
Wow…that is awesome! Great idea for the patio. We also have alot of Helicopters and a train about 50 yards away. A fountian would be a great addition to our outdoor space.
I can’t ‘see’ the armoire in the fountain..but how cool!!!

just wondering…have you guys ever considered adding to your tabs up top? being one of your newer readers i always wonder about older posts that i’ve missed out on. tabs for each category of posts might be helpful (reader redesigns, moodboards, before and afters etc.) it would be nice to find all of these things in one place now that you guys probably have a decent collection of posts in several categories.
although you guys are always really great about posting links to older posts whenever you reference them, and that works well too!

If you head over to the Search tab in the top right hand corner of the blog and click “Topics” you can easily scroll through different categories (like Reader Redesigns, Design Dilemmas, Before & Afters, etc). That’s a really neat conversion, and probably a big money-saver instead of buying a new fountain, but what a shame to lose such a beautiful piece of furniture.

I can’t figure out how it went from armoire to fountain, even after looking at her blog, but it sure is fantastic! Love that they could recycle all of that material into something so incredibly different. Wow!

Great job on the conversion! Incredibly eco-friendly and creative — That’s for sure! I must say I’m with Janelle, though … It is really too bad she had to destroy the armoire. To each their own, I suppose, but I, for one, would’ve happily taken that gorgeous piece off her hands!
Random design question– we have black appliances that I totally regret (wish we would have gone white or stainless steel). We want to replace our cheapo builder grade kitchen sink. I want a white sink but I’m wondering if you think it would look funny with black appliances? Our countertops are speckled grey/khaki colors with light oak cabinets.
Go for it! Since there are gray speckles in the counters it should help the white sink and the black appliances relate to each other. And by bringing in more white accessories (a ceramic fruit bowl on the counter, a white dishtowel hanging over the oven handle, etc) it’ll further tie things together for a seamless look. Hope it helps!

To those who admired the old armoire – thanks, we liked it, too. (My husband made it.)But it did not fit in our new apartment and, sadly, we could not even give it away. Next time we will find one of you.
Hmmm… I am quite impressed by her imagination, and the fact that she was able to use the materials to make something she really wanted and loves. It was a nice piece before too, though. All in all, pretty darn impressive resourcefulness!

That’s the damnest makeover I’ve ever seen.
Simply extraordinary.
Just looking at the piece, I would have guessed that the only thing that could be done with it was to either turn in into a planter or a coffin. Water fountain would have never occurred to me.
It’s a stroke of genius!
It’s amazing it redesign to a new and artistic design that no one can detect it from it’s original form.
