Jonel’s Design Dilemma
Jonel’s blank slate of a living room is raw and ready for a major update. Here’s her letter:
My living room needs help! I don’t know my exact style but I would like a comfortable, light, and airy living space. I like country with a bit of casual modern. I also like natural items. I don’t mind patterns. I like neutrals, greens, blues and grays- nothing very bold and bright but I am honestly up for any color scheme you think would work. The blue carpet will be removed to reveal the hardwood floors underneath. This is my first home so I will need a couch, chairs (I like the Dolce one from Target you have), coffee and/or side tables, window treatments, tv/entertainment area, light fixtures, storage options, and whatever else you see fit. I have a 5 year old daughter and 2 puppies so I would like a couch or chairs that are easy to clean up although I really prefer not to have leather ones. Also, in front of the fireplace on the floor are some loose red bricks that I would like to change, any suggestions? Thank you so much. I can’t wait for your suggestions. -Jonel

Here’s the plan:

And now for the mood board breakdown.

1. Once that old blue carpeting comes up and the hardwood floors are revealed, this space will already be on the way to a huuuge makeover. Plus some light yet warm tan paint (Glidden’s Water Chestnut) will look great on the walls when combined with a crisp white fireplace, trim, and doors. And since Jonel mentioned that she’d love a suggestion for the cracked and loose brick tiles on the floor in front of the fireplace, we think replacing them with simple and clean white 12″ floor tile (or even small white mosaic tiles or subway tile) will extend that clean white tone from the brick down onto the surround for even more presence and cozy style. We’d also suggest upgrading the railing to a basic clean-lined dark wood or painted white one for an instant facelift. When it comes to the rest of the color palette we’ll be bringing in some rich chocolate wood tones and layering in some golden and wheaty neutrals along with soft sage and celery greens and a fair amount of soft tan and cream to keep things casual, open and inviting.
2. We love these three pillows which will serve as small bursts of color and texture since Jonel prefers neutral larger pieces (which are always a timeless choice). We’d love to see the patterned pillow (on sale!) on the chair that we’ll be bringing in as well as on the sectional (along with the other two pillows – this one and this one- each appearing at least twice on the sectional to break it up and add inviting warmth and cozy style).
3. We always love a large mirror over the fireplace to bounce around lots of light, but because Jonel’s space has lot of large doorways and openings we thought a large square piece of art would also look great. This luxe oversized canvas is ready to hang (no framing required- plus it’s light and easy to mount) and it has hits of warm wheat, gold, cream and a lot of other tones in our color scheme to create a stunning focal point above the fireplace.
4. Jonel mentioned that she loved the Dolce Lounge Chair that we have in our den and living room so we headed over to Target to find one for her. Imagine our surprise when we learned that they now make them in a soft sage color, which is perfect for injecting a bit of interest and a splash of subtle color to Jonel’s living room. Plus the price is right! When it comes to the placement of the seating area, we’d love to see the L-shaped sectional positioned so it faces the fireplace and the large doorway without the french doors (since we’ll place the TV to the right of that doorway for easy viewing). Then the sage slipper chair can be placed about 5 feet in front of the doorway facing in towards the sectional to create a U-shaped seating area that feels balanced and floats in the middle of the room on an area rug that will ground everything and create a cozy and inviting room within a room.
5. We’d love to see these feathery golden-yellow blooms in a gold or tan vase on the left side of the fireplace mantel (layered in front of the art which will hang on that wall above the mantel) for an asymmetrical and cheerful effect.
6. Hanging this gorgeous pendant light full of golds and greens about 12″ from the ceiling will really update the entire room (we’d love to see it centered on the fireplace- it looks like the fixture box might need to be moved a smidge to the left but that shouldn’t be a major undertaking since the room is still pretty raw). By centering it on the fireplace it will also end up in the middle of our floating seating arrangement to further define that area and create and inviting and balanced effect in an instant.
7. We love the idea of a large storage ottoman used as a coffee table so Jonel can stash toys, games, and anything else she loves to keep out of plain sight in a moment’s notice. Plus ottomans are super kid friendly and this one has a great microfiber-ish texture that’s easy to maintain and keep clean thanks to the forgiving color. And if Jonel is ever entertaining and in need of a more solid surface she can simply lay a large tray on the ottoman to create a coffee table-ish effect in a snap. And because the slipcovered sectional that we’ve chosen for the space has a nice right angle, the ottoman will mimic that shape and tuck right in to complete the seating area and tie the slipper chair and the sectional together for a nice U-shaped seating area that’s effortlessly casual and undeniably comfortable.
8. Here’s the much mentioned slipcovered sectional that will add kid-friendly and dog-friendly style (and comfort!) to the room in a snap. We love that half of it will face the fireplace while the other half will face the wall with the doorway sans french doors (where we’ll be placing the TV). We also like that the rolled arms and the slipcovered nature of the sofa bring in a dose of country style which Jonel mentioned that she liked while the clean-lined shape still fits in with the casual modern feeling that she also enjoys. And once Jonel tosses about five of those green accent pillows on the sofa to break it up and add textural interest it’ll look even more plush and cozy.
9. This media stand (on clearance!) is meant to be placed in the corner of a room and we think it’s perfect for the corner to the right of the doorway without the french doors (which is one of the only places to put a TV in the entire room). The rich dark wood is perfectly classic-meets-modern but it’s still much more casual than a large oversized armoire since the flatscreen TV will be out and easy to see from the half of the sectional which faces that wall. Perfect for the comfy and laid-back vibe that Jonel adores.
10. We love this 8 x 10 striped rug since it’s full of so many of the colors in our palette. Plus the stripes mimic the lines in the chandelier that will be hanging overhead for a cohesive and layered sophistication that’s still simple and inviting. We’d love to see it centered in the room with the sectional on two sides of it and the slipper chair on the third side facing the wall with the french doors to create a perfect u-shaped seating area with great views of the fireplace and the TV. And popping the plush storage ottoman in the middle of the rug will be the icing on the cake.
Oh and this round country-chic side table can be placed between the sectional and the slipper chair to further join them in a U-shaped arrangement if Jonel would like even more places to store or place things beyond the ottoman. And speaking of places to store things, we love the idea of putting one of these light and airy dark wood bookcases on both sides of the fireplace to create an almost built-in and balanced effect while providing additional display and storage space. And accessorizing them with woven baskets, hardcover books, and gold and green accessories (like potted plants, candle holders, vases, bowls, figurines, etc) will really complete the look.
As for the windows we’d love to see these soft neutral roman shades hanging high above each window on either side of the fireplace for even more balance and style (mounting them just about an inch or two below the ceiling will make the windows look even bigger and more lovely).
So there you have it. A living room full of light and casual style. We can’t wait to see what you guys think!
Update: We sadly can no longer find the time to take on client commissioned mood boards (we now whip up general inspiration boards instead) but if we ever reinstate them we’ll make a big announcement!

Love all the warm tones in this room, balanced out by the light paint on the walls and the sectional. Are those forsythia blooms in the vase? I love those.
Thanks Jenny! So glad you’re loving our latest mood board. As for those blooms, Z Gallerie calls them “Dancing Oncidiums” but they sure look like forsythia branches to us!

I LOVE the green you guys chose! I’m a sucker for anything green, but this shade is so cheery and warm. I think I’m going to try convincing the hubs to overhaul the living room….wish me luck!
Luck!

I was just coming to close my laptop down and focus on the last part of the day, and what do you do? Put up another post! So, here I am – but, seriously, then I’m buckling down :)
I love the color choices. Sounds like you’ve totally nailed the look Jonel was going for. One question – did you say that the french doors are not staying? Did you say those lovely doors are being replaced by a TV? They totally make the room in my eyes. So sorry to see them go :(
~Jacci
Okay – got it. You didn’t mean the doorway was going to lose the french doors – you meant the OTHER doorway that is already “sans french doors”. Got it. Sorry – took me a minute. So glad the french doors get to stay!!! And I agree, the flooring change is going to be HUGE. Jonel, please, please send after pics!!! :)
XO,
Jacci
Wow! I really hope Jonel sends some “After” pics…this is going to be an awesome makeover!
This is going to be beautiful :) I love the green shade of the chairs! Any reason you suggested roman blinds vs. curtain panels here?
LOVE the sectional without the Pottery Barn price, but just checked into it and it is unavailable :-( In case it becomes available again – could you please tell me how thick the cushions are and approximately how much shipping was? Thanks so much
I know they sell out super quick, but how much are the mood boards?
Wondering if you have any favorite sources for window treatments? I’m searching for a roman shade with a cute design for my kitchen and all I can find are plain/one color shades. I’m afraid I’m going to have to attempt making something myself! :)
Emily- We love going to stores for window treatments so you can feel them and see them in person (plus they tend to be much cheaper “off the rack” then when you order them in a custom size online). A few of our favorite places for bamboo blinds are Target, Home Depot, Lowe’s and Walmart and when it comes to curtains we love JC Penney, Target and Ikea. Hope it helps!
Jamie- The price (along with a lot of other mood board info) is covered right here in the first paragraph on our Design Advice page: http://www.younghouselove.com/home-advice/
Karen- Sadly a lot of the items that we put in mood boards sell out really quickly these days (which is why we wait to post them for all to see, so our clients can get first dibs on things). We’re unsure about the thickness of the cushions or the shipping price but if you keep an eye out for the sectional it should be back on their website soon so just keep checking (they restock it all the time). You can also call them and try to get on a “waiting list” as well. Hope it helps!
Katie- Since Jonel has baseboard heaters we thought roman blinds would be soft and pretty without worrying about a potential fire hazard. Plus sometimes we just like to switch things up and since that fireplace wall is so lovely and symmetrical, roman shades will look gorgeous there. Hope it helps!

Sherry and John, just a heads up. In your bathroom demo post you mentioned that you were gonna rent the $19 truck at Home Depot and take the demo stuff to the dump. Check with the dump first. We tried that up here in MD and they said that it was considered a commercial vechicle and we had to go over the scales like other commericial trucks (all because it had the Home Depot logo). It was $50 to just go across the scales and then you had to pay based on how much the truck weighs. Since we only had an old wooden sofa in there we just took it back home, chopped it up with our saw, and then put it in pieces in my SUV and paid $3.
Hey Ashley,
Thanks so much for the truck rental tip for the bathroom! We’ll definitely call the dump beforehand to be sure!

thanks for answering my question about the roman blinds- I didn’t notice the baseboard heaters. You guys think of everything! No wonder you’re #12 in the best design blogs :)
Aw thanks so much Katie! We’re still pinching ourselves over that. What a crazy honor. Insane!!!

Oh wow. Those before pictures are… wow. Let’s just say I can’t wait for the after! There is a ton of potential!
I see that you guys have two of the dolce chairs from Target and you often put them in your mood boards, but I’m wondering if you’ve ever read the reviews on the chairs. Most reviewers say that they are hard to assemble. Have you run across that problem? If so, how did you handle it?
Thanks!
We got ours about two years ago and they went together just fine. In fact I put both of them together while John was at work in about 20 minutes each. We’ve enjoyed them very much and would totally give them five stars for comfort, looks and price- which is totally why we have no qualms recommending them to our readers. Hope it helps!

that is a hard room to work with, what with the stairs jutting in, the fireplace along the wall, and doors on either side….good luck! I know you’ll make it happen
I have to say, I love LOVE the cast-iron railing….beautiful! and such a unique touch. good luck with the room, YHL’s suggestions look great, I know it’ll be beautiful when you’re done!!
I love it!
I love how you used such warm golden tones but it still looks so fresh and light! I would have never been able to dream it up!!
I can’t wait to see these afters!!!
I find myself wondering… did you all go with the cordless roman shades before or after the new recall? (Seriously, does anything get past you two? Nice work!)
Haha, funny that you noticed that Blair! We actually heard murmurings of the recall a while back, and you know we’re all about safety first!

Erin,
I bought both the Dolce lounge chair and the Avington striped chair (that has been on a design board before) about a month ago. I also read the reviews but just figured if we had any problems, we could return/exchange them. But, no problems! And, we love them both. And, we bought them because I saw them on here, so thank you YHL!
Also, we ordered the Avington chair for $160 (plus free shipping and 15% off), but then I saw they had it on sale at Target for $99 so I made sure to get in on that deal. Sweeeet.
Hey Kate,
That’s so great to hear! Since we did get ours a while back sometimes we wonder if the quality dropped off as of late but you have further convinced me that they’re among the best chairs out there- especially for the price!

Great mood board – love the drum pendant, the rug and pops of fresh sage! If Jonel wants to save money and still give her stair railing an instant facelift, would painting it a rich oil rubbed bronze color do the trick? As for wood finishes, do you have a favorite dark espresso stain that you can recommend? Do you prefer working with gels or stains?
I don’t know how you do it – look at a room in the throes of construction and visualize such a wonderful possibility. Can’t wait to see the afters! It sounds like you’re recommending she get rid of the white iron stair railing – is it wrong to say you’d have to pry it from my cold, dead hands?
Yes! You guys are geniuses. We love the idea of keeping the railing in an oil-rubbed bronze finish!

I have a question for you guys…is it weird to put a rug on a carpet? My carpet is a creamy tan color, any suggestions? Or should I do pops of color in a different way? Thanks! -Sara
It’s definite NOT weird! We love area rugs on carpets. They’re a great way to define a smaller zone within a room (like a seating area that’s floating in the middle of the space like Jonel’s). Hope it helps!

Hey guys! You have probably already been contacted about this, but did you know you’re #12 on Time’s Top 50 World Best Design Blogs? Very cool! :)

Hey Erin,
Yeah we’re going crazy over here! We can’t believe it!

Thank you both so much for answering my question so quickly about the sectional. I love your blog!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats on being named one of the top 50 blogs IN THE WORLD!
Thanks so much Deb! We’re still pinching ourselves!

Our living room (in the house we just bought) is very similar, so this mood board is super helpful for me!! Maybe I’m just half-blind tonight, but I can’t figure out how half of the sectional will face the fireplace and half will face the doors though… and it’ll be facing the corner for the tv also? It seems part of the couch would have to have its back to the fireplace or doors. I’ll keep staring at the picture and trying to figure it out :P I love the furniture and colors you chose!
Hey Erin,
The sectional will face the fireplace and the other side of the sectional (since it’s L-shaped) will face the large doorway that doesn’t have the french doors on it (which is also the wall with the TV in the corner so it works out well). Hope it helps!
xo,
s
Don’t mind me… I think I’ve figured it out. In the second picture down, we’d be looking at the back of the long part of the sectional.
Wow- fast reply! Thanks!! :)
I saw some pendant lamps just like the one you have here in an upscale Italian restaurant in Miami, Fl! LOVE it like always. How do you never run out of good ideas? :)
i love this room! i hope she shares an after picture. Those colors are my favorite. My SO and I are wanting to re-do our basement and I want to put a sectional down there. This one looks to be perfect. I’ll just have to look at the measurements to see if it’d fit. There are lots of good reviews on it also. We’re hoping to re-do the basement after we are finished with our kitchen….cabinets are currently on order. Needless to say, we are seeing red over this basement. Why you ask? Because he wants to paint it red. I love red, but not in a room with no natural light and low ceilings. He says it’s only fair to let him do what he wants with his “man cave” because I have got to decorate the whole upstairs with no questions asked. Mycompromise is to add touches of red through pillows or art. Sorry to vent. I’m hoping you all can help us compromise with a design plan when the budget allows, probably in the Spring!
Love your blog! This is a little off topic, but has anyone mentioned how much you resemble the couple that was originally featured on the first Metropolitan Home magazine cover from March 1975 (it was called Apartment Living way back then). Of course, you would have to adjust for the groovy clothes, etc… Are you related to those people????
Hey Karen,
That’s too funny! We’ve never heard that (and aren’t related to that couple) but now we’re off to google them and check out the resemblance!

This room is going to look fabulous when complete! I can’t wait to see the finished product…I love everything on that mood board!
Great mood board! Love the color scheme, and the pieces you have chosen can go from being very informal to more formal, just by changing out some of the accessories. Thanks for the feedback on the Dolce chairs as well. My husband and I saw them in a couple of your other rooms and loved them. However, when we went to buy them, we read the reviews about the assembly and got a little scared off. I have been looking for chairs like these for quite some time though, so with your reassurnace..we may have to purchase them afterall;)
I LOVE this mood board! I wondered why is struck me so hard, then I looked up from the computer and realized we used the same colors in our living room! (Good to know I am on the right track…) I pasted a storage unit from pier 1 that we have next to our fireplace (tv mounted above) that holds DVDs and X box components. It might be another option to the open bookshelves you suggested in the board…but a little more costly.

I love my mood board. My boyfriend and I have different tastes but so far everything that I have ordered and put in the room has his seal of approval. He loves the room color, the painting (gorgeous in person) and rug. We have been having some shipping/thief issues (two of my orders have been delivered but I did not receive them). One of them has been resolved (the painting- they reshipped it to me) but I am waiting on the pendant light to be resolved. Hopefully soon! Unfortunately I couldn’t do the sectional (it was my favorite part) because I was scared it was a bit too large (but I remember the price with shipping and 8% was around 1600 or so, HTH the person wondering about the price) but I found a similar sofa and chase to get the same look. The entire mood board is such a great inspiration for the finished look. The floors under the carpeting ended up being gross so we are going to install IKEA laminate flooring. I hope to have after pictures once all is done. Thanks for the additional ideas as well everyone!
Hey Jonel,
We’re so glad to hear that you’re still loving the mood board and that things are arriving and even earning your boyfriend’s seal of approval. We wish you tons of luck getting the room together and we can’t wait to see how it all turns out!

I love all of your mood boards! And have noticed that you use JCPenney sofas pretty frequently. Have you heard from anyone who actually purchases one? Are they comfortable, well made?
There is one I’m interested in, but am hesistant to buy a couch that I’ve never sat in! Thanks again, and a big CONGRATULATIONS on #12 :)
Good question! We actually received a few emails from readers telling us that they love their JC Penney sofas who suggested them as a great resource for our mood boards (at the time we were recommending a lot of Ikea and Room & Board sofas so they thought JC Penney was a fantastic alternative). So while we can’t personally attest to their comfort and quality, many readers have loved them! Hope it helps.

I must say that you nailed the furniture layout! Whenever I read one of your moodboards, I just read the letter first and scan the before pics. I try to figure out an arrangement on my own… just for fun…before I read your solutions. I was at a loss on where to put the TV but that corner unit fits just perfectly. I love the way you turn the ‘problems’ of a room into unique character. Oh, and I’m really, really, really holding myself back on getting those green berry pillows. Man, they’re tempting.
I always love to see what you guys come up with on the mood board. You always surprise me at how well you’re able to come up with something the owner loves. Keep up the good work and congrats on the baby. Can’t wait to see the nursery!!!
We just got the Dolce Lounge Chair in the cream and brown vine pattern for Christmas. I am in love with it! It looks so great with our orange leather sofa :) And it only took my hub half an hour to put it together.
Love the color pallette and especially love the colors of the pillows. We just painted our family room in a similar color scheme.
