Window Shopping: It’s Target Time
We’re back with another fun virtual shopping trip to Target (like this one and this one of yore). We slipped through and snapped all the purrrty holiday and non-holiday themed things that tickled our fancy and John even got a chance to make fun of my Twilight obsession. Sure it felt a little soon for all the Christmas things, but there was so much good stuff to be found that we just kept clicking away. Let the fun begin…
In those impossible-to-resist decorative rows up near the front of the store there was suddenly lots of chic holiday paraphernalia to be discovered. And I was all over these amazing faux-bois silver vases (the picture doesn’t do them justice) and these gorgeous candelabras (one lays low with chunky pillar candles on it and the other stands tall with smaller tea lights glittering among the metal branches). They would both add so much festive sparkle and would even work well for the entire winter season (can’t you imagine them gleaming at New Year’s too?).

We also loved their take on holiday pillows. Not a big red santa in sight, but lots of silvery and icy blue patterns that would pair super well with the white cable knit sweater pillow beside them for a snowy winter feeling. And at $19.99 a pop, the price is right. Sigh.

And speaking of $19.99, this massive gold platter would be quite the statement piece no matter the season, but it sure would look festive full of metallic ornaments in the center of the table or even full of white taper candles glowing (gotta love instant ambiance that’s easier than lugging in logs and starting a fire).

And to continue the gold theme, we also gravitated straight to these gorgeous $15 and $20 amber-gold hurricanes (which can be filled with everything from a flickering candle or gold spray painted pinecones to festive mixed nuts (wouldn’t large walnuts and chestnuts turn them into great Thanksgiving centerpieces?). We also drooled over this lovely-in-any-season glass based lamp (we’re a little obsessed with glass lamps in general) and it’s just $39.99. Delish.

And we’re calling it. Warm goldy-green is going to be THE Christmas color this year. At least it will in our house, where we plan to add pops of soft leafy lime to our collection of glittering silver & glass ornaments. It’s fun yet sophisticated at the same time- and it’s definitely a way to wake up metallics and give them a fresh new look. And these pretty little trees in varying heights would make such a fun little accent on a mantel or the center of a table (sort of like last year’s dining room feather tree grouping).

We also loved this intricate china with modern little holiday prints on them (especially the ones with subtle silver snowflakes lining the rim). And at $12.99 each there’s no pressure to grab a full set of eight or ten- just snag one or two for laying out dessert (cookies? pastries? biscotti? brownies?) and they’ll instantly earn more attention than the sweet stuff itself. Well, maybe it’ll be a tie.

We also checked out the holiday vase filler options and walked away with two DIY ideas. Why not collect your own pinecones and spray them gold, silver, bronze or any other color you’d like (white? that always works for us). And likewise, we loved the idea of using cinnamon sticks to add texture and seasonal scent to a room (coffee beans also make for some cozy vase filler around the holidays).

We also made our way to the actual holiday decorating section in the back of the store, and although most of the stuff wasn’t set up yet, we did get a taste of some of this year’s ornaments- and we liked what we saw. All three of these awesome $9.99 ornament collections feel modern, crisp and super festive. So whether you’re planning to dress up your tree like a blue and silver ice princess, keep things white on cream or go festive and colorful… you’re covered.

We also made our way over to the holiday lighting section (which was set up, although the trees and most of the ornaments had yet to arrive) and we noticed that they had plenty of LED lights to choose from. They’re definitely an appealing option for their amazing energy efficiency. They even come in “warm white” and the crisp almost-blue “bright white” so you can choose the look you’re going for. And just to be thorough, we made our way over to the regular backyard aisle (you know, the one with the solar lights and the all-season-long string lights?). And there we saw pretty round bulb lights (exactly like the ones we used for our backyard wedding) which we think would also be super festive for the holidays. We just love those big round globes gleaming in the night…

Now this picture probably has you questioning my taste level, but these super cheap bows (10 for $4.99) are actually what we snagged in bulk last year to stick around our tree in lieu of traditional “garland.” And we loved the outcome! Just picture them all fluffed up among gleaming silver and glass ornaments as opposed to flattened on a red piece of cardboard (you can actually catch a glimpse of them in action right here).

And now for the non-holiday finds we were drawn to like moths to a flame. This brightly patterned green bedding was super fun, and of course would look lovely any time of the year- especially in a room that needs a hit of color and pattern to wake things up (read: a room with white or tan walls, matching wood furnishings, and not much else going on). Bam. Instant style.

And this oversized wire basket from Smith & Hawken (on clearance for just $17) was another lucky find. For the holidays it would look so pretty with evergreen branches and ornaments in it, and for the rest of the year it can hold anything from fluffy towels or TP in the bathroom to shoes, leashes, gloves and hats by the door in a laundry room or mudroom (or any makeshift organizational corner that you throw together).

And I finally got to “meet” these pillows in person after recommending them for many a mood board. We just love the chic circular graphics and the colors are perfectly neutral so they’ll work in nearly any room (oh and they’re just $25 a pop).

Last but certainly not least, John couldn’t resist an impromptu photoshoot in the art aisle. He loves to point and laugh at me for devouring four teenage vampire novels earlier this year and I can’t really say I blame him (but in my defense, they were very good). Just don’t hang this poster in your house. Ever.

So that’s what fried our bacon at Target this season. What about you guys? Any favorite items above that you’ll be dashing out to make yours? Any other Tarjay finds that you’re coveting these days? What did we miss? Let’s talk shop.
Psst – Already in the spirit of Christmas? Here are some fun decorating posts from last year to keep you humming “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer). First there’s this one, this one, this one, this one, this one, this one, and this one. Have fun!
Oh and p.s. – We have no affiliation with Target nor were we paid or otherwise rewarded for this post by the fine folks at Tarjay. We just love sharing things that tickle our fancy and we hope that you enjoy our little window shopping excursions.

Sherry – Don’t worry, I’m right there with you on the Twilight obsession. (Men – they will NEVER understand! LOL) It is definitely my guilty pleasure! And I, like you, devoured those books over the summer (in a month!) Soooo good!! Can’t wait for the movie! Oh, did I mention i’m the same age as you! (blushing from embarrassment)
Re: “Tar-jay” I am loving everything you’ve showed above. I actually have a few of those icey blue/silver throw pillows I recently picked up! Great find :)
Love the really bright colors they are throwing out there for Christmas these days. I bought all of my decorations on clearance after Christmas last year! I’m pretty much all set!
Uh, John over Twilight Brittish dude anytime. Hands down.
Love the Target finds. Happy holiday decorating…can’t wait to see what you guys do this year!
Aw thanks Kelli! I can almost feel John’s cheeks burning from here but I agree: John is way better than the British dude. And if truth be told, while I was reading Twilight I pictured John as Edward because they kept describing his chiseled cheeks and good bone structure which never failed to conjure up images of John in my brain. Now I’m really a nerd huh? Pretending my hubby was a vampire for about a week while I devoured those books like they were candy. Oh well, we all have our vices I guess…

What fun! No need to apologize for the little bows. I have used bows for years on my tree in lieu of garland. Some years I buy bows, some years I buy the ribbon and make my own bows. They store great in a shirt gift box and need just a bit of primping to pop them on the tree next year.
there are so many theme options it would be hard for me to choose if i was just staring out. but my theme was decided over 30 years ago when as a new bride i began making a few ornaments every year and then began the tradition of making an ornament for each of my kids (and nieces and nephews) each year. so our theme is definatly eclectic!! throw in lots of greenery and white candles and voila, christmas!!
Ooh … virtual shopping! Almost as fun as real shopping but easier on the pocketbook. I love it.
Sherry I did exactly the same thing this year, I devoured all 4 books in about the span of a week. I’m even guilty of finding one of them online in pdf form to read at work!
I’m looking forward to seeing how you guys decorate your living room for Christmas :) Maybe I can talk my husband into a mood board for our bedroom for a Christmas present.
NOV. 20TH = NEW MOON! YES!!!!!
I have been gushing over those lamps for months now. The BF doesn’t like them, but I bet I could change his mind if I just bought them. ;)
Oh, and Twilight? Yeah, the cast was at my mall last night, where I was working, and had to deal with masses of teenage girls screaming, then using our computers to upload photos from PhotoBooth onto Facebook. Twilight? I’m with John on this one, no thanks. Hehe.
sigh is right!! it kinda breaks my heart each time i go in target that i can’t buy everything!
I’ve been looking for some new light blue accent pillows–I had scoured Target, but didn’t think to look in their seasonal decor section. Great tip!
I love when you guys do this! Except when I get to Target and think “Ohhh, John and Sherry showed that on their blog..cute!!” and I want to buy everything.
I took a picture of my hubby in the pet aisle at Target which he thought was really strange so I had to show him the picture of John. I said “See, I’m not the only one taking pics of my hubby at Target.” so thank you for helping me not seem quite so strange. lol Although I don’t have a blog so maybe it is a little strange…
i was just at target the other day eying those very same glittery green trees too. love them! great finds all around – thanks for sharing!
My boyfriend and I probably hit up Target once a week [if not to buy something, just to look around] and you took pictures of practically everything I love! ESPECIALLY THAT LAMP! I have been trying to convince my boyfriend we need it but he doesn’t agree. And those pillows in the silver “holiday” section are to die! I look at those everytime and wanna snag them up!
We LOVE shopping at Target. I refer to it as the danger zone. We are absolutely in love with their new Up & Up brand of products. The products are just as good as the name brands, sometimes better!

Oh how I love Tarjay – let me count the ways!
I love the Christmas decor plates and the tree/candle stand you pictured. I really love their holiday plates with snowflakes on them – so pretty and festive for the whole winter season, not just Christmas. Do you check out Ikea’s Christmas decor at all? My hubby and I are each 1/2 Swedish and have lots of Swedish Christmas traditions. I love their straw goat wrapping paper and various straw wreaths and dala horses. :)
Hey Christin,
Oh yeah we just hit up Ikea this weekend for the big basement project (pics to come) and loved all of their fun Christmas stuff too! Didn’t have the camera for pics, but we definitely recommend that people check it out if they can!

I thought that bedding was mine at first! I’ve got the DwellStudio Birds Damask comforter set (which is very very similar). I had to get my mom to bring it back to Canada when she was visiting a friend in Montana. Whenever you guys post about Target it makes me a little sad because we don’t have one up here in The Great White North and we really really should!
As for Twilight, I’m in the same boat as you! 25 and totally pictured my husband as Edward. It’s good to know we’re not alone. :)
After avoiding the Twilight craze for so long, I just picked up the first book and I haven’t been able to put it down. I have to admit, I now understand what all the fuss was about.
Hey do yall pre-budget before you enter those pearly red doors? Also I love Target, Twilight, and this blog..my day is so great right now! P.S I’ve already got tickets..what what.
Hey Tiffany T,
Wow you’re hardcore with your pre-purchased tickets. Although just this morning I was talking with my sister in law about going on next Friday during the day to avoid the crowds. It’s official, I’m a grandma. As for pre-budgeting, we don’t walk in with a number of what we’ll spend but we’re pretty good at realizing our house is pretty accessorized already so it’s a rare day when we actually walk out with some sort of decor item (but we frequently leave with items like paper towels, gift wrap, greeting cards, etc). Hope it helps!

I, too, read all four of those novels and was made fun of by my husband. However, I justify it by saying I also read Harry Potter (which was 10x better) and I hope you’ve read those as well. =)
Oh and if you liked the four Vampire Novels, you might like Vampire Diaries on TV. Haha, it is just as full of cheesy goodness.
Hey Natalie,
I’m a little scared to admit it but I do in fact like The Vampire Diaries and I also looove True Blood. Basically if there are fangs I’m there. Curling up into a little ball now…

Get outta my head! Shaggy rugs under the tree in lieu of tree skirt: check. Twilight obsession (I also read them in a week): check. The middle name of our yet-to-be-conceived child (someday): Freeman – in honor of the hub’s grandpa. Those gold earring you’ve got? I wear the same all the time. But they’re from Kohl’s. Hello, kindreds.
Just sayin’.
Still loving you guys from Iowa. And you should tell John to check out http://www.daytrotter.com if he wants some great free music. He’ll like it. -A
We are kindred spirits! That’s too funny. It’s such a small world.

Great post, I frequently do the same kind of posts on my blog! It seems imagining everything you can do with stuff is almost as fun as actually bringing it all home! I am so excited for the Christmas season (especially getting to decorate my own place for the very first time!) and I’m SUPER excited to see that wire basket on sale, I’m officially going to Target today— PLUS my puppy needs some good Christmas jammies as well, and at $4.99 they are calling my name! Great post, I love your style!
Thanks,
Caitlin
Target and Twlight 2 of my most favorite things. I can walk around Target for hours. I like to call it my happy place!!
And I hate to admit it… I’ve read throught the Twlight series twice since June
Unfortunatetly I can see the pics while I’m at work, so I’ll have to log back on from home later, but I did have a totally random question for you. YOu mentioned vase fillers and have even done that a bunch yourself esp for the holidays. Is is safe to put a candle with all that stuff laying in the bottom? I mean, can I put moss or ornaments into a vase and stick a candle in the middle and actually light the candle? I’ve wondered that for a while :-)
Oh…and I love posts like these…probably my fav because not only do you find actual things that we can buy (and cheap) but you give various suggestions on uses which is great. I want to get the most bang for my buck and knowing that I can buy something and use it seasonally and as regular everyday decor is great. Thanks for the tips!
Hey Jennifer F,
Good question! The candle would definitely have to be a lot taller than the vase filler (and shouldn’t be left unsupervised for hours at a time) but it’s totally possible to burn a candle in a hurricane with vase filler like coffee beans or brown rice (one of our favorites, which you can see here): http://www.younghouselove.com/2009/05/basket-repurposing-edible-decor/
Bigger leafier things like giant fall leaves lining a hurricane with a burning candle might be more of a fire hazard so the general rule would be to be careful and keep an eye on things to avoid any disasters. Hope it helps!

I have that lamp! We have a chocolate brown shade on it and it looks amazing!
I loved this post! I am so in the holiday mood ALREADY and have been thinking about the kind of decor theme I want to go with this year. And the metallics have been the winner for me. So those vases and candelabras are perfect!
You’ve got me drooling (at work no less! Shhh…don’t tell.) My latest Tarjay love is the Waverly Madison drapes. Someday I will finish my guest room and send a pic of their fabulousness. They are out of stock right now but I check every day so I can pick up the valances for a different room. Love, love, love them.
Target might be the best store in the universe! I have two of those exact lamps on the table behind our couch. Love them. And I haven’t seen those faux-bois vases, but I will keep an eye out. I must have the short one!
Love Tarjay!!! I’m there often and buy a lot from that store. I love everything you posted. Great finds. I can’t wait to decorate my recently done Family Room for Christmas. I think I’m going with silver and maybe a pop of turquoise to keep it fun. I have to go shopping.
Fabulous finds! Now, if only we could get Target to come to Toronto, Ontario, Canada….I can dream, can’t I? Maybe I’ll put it on my Wish List to Santa ;)
Hey! I too love those pillows and am hoping to add a few to our couch this weekend.
On a semi related note – I’ve been searching high and low for the white pintucked duvet cover in the new Tar-jay commercial (ya know, Erin’s first Thanksgiving?) – Any ideas who makes it for Target?
Thanks
MJ
Hey MJ,
No idea! So sorry. Wish we could be of more help. Anyone else out there know? Feel free to chime in!

Oh… TARGET… Why must you be stuffed to the brim with so many delightful things??? I can honestly spend hours in any given TARGET, if I’m having an easy/open day. I am safest, though, when my husband and I go in together (with our three kids of course!), because I am much less prone to purchase unnecessary things, like adorable salt shakers and silly little $1 items that I really don’t need but find amusing, etc. I loved this little post. I totally thought of your home when I was there last week and saw all of the very neutral colored decor. Apparently… YOU ARE INVADING MY BRAIN WITH YOUR FAB BLOG!!! ha ha ha. Have a good day!
Love love love the branch candle holders and the green twig tree. Great finds!
I found a pack of 69 ornaments on their site for $19.99- such a great deal. And they come in modern color schemes like the ones in store!
Have you seen the SNL spoof on Twilight? It’s with Taylor Swift and it’s called “Firelight”. Pretty funny.
I agree with your Target finds. I love all the silvery and cold decor.
Yeah we did see SNL’s Firelight spoof. The whole “that’s the Franks” thing killed us.

Oh my gosh, I want all of it!! I am so excited to decorate for Christmas this year – I bought a lot of stuff on sale last year after the holidays. I am doing a silver & gold theme… so exciting!
I’ve already made my grand swoop through Target’s holiday stuff. I just cannot figure out what items I actually want to keep and decorate with, between my mass finds from Target, Joann’s, and Michaels! I was enamored with the “silver” finds at Target as well. Did you guys see those brown twig trees with the purple accents as well? In the same aisle I picked one up but not quite sure if it will make the cut. I’m really loving the “silver” theme this year and will have to make a run over to see if my Target got those pine cone and cinnamon stick vase fillers. I was eye balling that silver twig with pillars base and feel like even if I don’t use it this year I’m going to regret not having it! I cannot wait for this Sunday, the day I have deemed “Christmas decorations approved!”
THANK YOU for posting links to former, related posts. I’ve been reading for awhile now, but I haven’t had the time to go through the archives. It’s great to have immediate links to fun holiday stuff from you two (er, three, Seneca just reminded me NOT to forget Burger!)!
LOVE the post and all the ideas. And MJ – I am also in love with the white duvet set in the target commercial, and I haven’t seen it on Target’s website. But I have seen one in West Elm’s catelog that is pretty close – http://www.westelm.com/products/b340/?pkey=cduvet-covers-quilts. Love it!
I *really* love the colorful ornaments this year. I’ve had a shades of blue and silver tree since I graduated from college and got my own place. Now since my kids are bigger and I have light bulb snowmen and toilet paper roll soldiers on my tree (made at school and I have to use them) I think it would be fun to go with it and add lots of color. Did you see the lollipop ornaments? Super-cute.
I like the spray painting pinecones idea too. My first Christmas on my own, I spray painted big leaves, pinecones and some other things and put them under the tree and around the house. It was festive and fun.
MJ – I think you want this comforter: http://tinyurl.com/yg6ryan — it is the Home Kissing Pleat Bedding Collection.
My mom spray painted pine cones silver, white and red when I was in elementary school so I’ve done the same in the past. They look great! I love the Target holiday decor but I’m waiting to see what I have in my own collection before I go out and buy new stuff.
Hi MJ!
Is this the bedding you’re looking for?

Hey MJ, yes I actually looked it up a few days ago because I too thought I liked it but decided I didn’t like the buttons.

Great hunting! After looking at last years entry for your holiday decor (I am new to your blog) I had to send a note to share with blog friends about kids and decorations….what to do??? I try to have a fabulously decorated house like you, but I have 6 children and their ideas and mine don’t always jive. I want them to be as creative as possible, so I let each of them have a tree(think Michael’s….small enough to fit on a dresser with lights)in their bedrooms. They can decorate it however they want, and I don’t care one bit. My livingroom looks beautiful. We set a small rejected tree with food and birdseed treats out the back porch also with lights it’s perfect at night. They get to decorate so much they don’t even care about my tree. Thanks for ALL your great ideas,
I am a YHL addict!
Hey Debra,
We love the idea of each child getting a mini tree to decorate so they can be creative and have their fun (and keep things more cohesive on the main tree). Genius!

Okay, check these amazing chairs out: http://www.target.com/Andres-II-Side-Chair/dp/B000BZ6ZAS/sr=1-1/qid=1257875716/ref=sr_1_1/186-5870105-4272567?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k%3Aandres%20II&page=1 They’re only $110 and right now you can get 15% off PLUS free shipping! I just purchased 6 for our dining room table and I’m so pleased with them! No, I’m not going to lounge in them for hours, but I’ll make it through a meal just fine. I’ve been searching for MONTHS for something good looking with a bit of texture to offset an otherwise bland space. These are perfect and they’re just as wonderful in person! Bonus: if they aren’t what you’re looking for, you can return them to an actual store. No shipping AND in-store return? What’s not to love about that?
Also, MJ- are you talking about the kissing pleat bedspread: http://www.target.com/s/186-5870105-4272567?_encoding=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&keywords=kissing%20pleat&searchSize=30&ref=sr_bx_1_1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=1038576&searchPage=1&searchRank=target104545 West Elm makes something similar, but in white, brown and blue (I think) only.
OMG I love Twilight too! jajajaj and I’m almost in my 30s jejejeje. I can’t wait to november 20th for New Moon :)
My husband didn’t understand my obsession with vampires but is getting used to it after having forced him to see Buffy The Vampire Slayer like 5 times already jaja (the whole 7 seasons)
Your Target finds are lovely :)
Love all the decorating ideas! Gotta love Target for so many reasons.
MJ – I also love the white pintucked comforter in the new Target commericals. It’s by Target home – it’s actually a comforter, dust ruffle, and 2 sham set. I showed it to the hubby over the weekend and he made a face that clearly said he didn’t agree with my choice! Good luck to you!
Thanks for all the answers to MJ’s question. You guys are the best!

What I like about decoartions now, is that you can keep them up longer than Christmas. A lot seems to be geared towards winter themed. Good picks!
john’s expression = classic.
oh and i love how so many people refer to it as ‘tarjay’. i am really stunned that they haven’t done a marketing campaign that references this yet.
Sweet! I love all of the great Target finds.
I did a little stop by Target myself this weekend and totally scored a wreath at 75% off. Check it out: http://bit.ly/2Ei8gD
