Pop Quiz: HomeGoods
Since we had so much fun a few weeks ago with this quiz from Ethan Allen, we thought we’d try another one on for size this week. This “StyleScope” quiz from HomeGoods (yes Sherry squealed when I revealed that it was created by her favorite accessory store) was actually shared by Stefanie on Twitter so we have her to thank for the fun.
But be sure to save some thanks for Deborah Needleman too. She created the quiz and you may recognize her as the founding editor-in-chief of Domino magazine (RIP). So you can imagine how high our hopes were for this analysis…
Unfortunately, I’d have to say it’s one of the more off-base results we’ve been given in a while. I was pegged as: Elegant Classic, which makes me picture someone serving tea in an evening gown (I can honestly say I’ve never experienced that, nor do I plan to). Some of the descriptions make a bit more sense (liking order, symmetry and timeless appeal) but most don’t sound very familiar at all (natural sense of drama, appreciation for family heirlooms – um, have you seen how much Ikea/Target/HomeGoods we own?). Maybe I got thrown off by all of the questions about entertaining (since that’s not something that we do a lot of- we’re too busy being blog nerds on nights and weekends).

Surprisingly (or perhaps not so surprisingly) Sherry also got the same Elegant Classic result. And she had the same initial hesitation that I did about the title. But her slightly altered description showed a bit more accuracy: valuing serenity, harmonious color palettes and respect for the environment. Her results continued to be different in some places (my design challenge: maximize; her challenge: organize) and exactly the same in others (we had the same “Happy Home” colors, which are somewhere near the neutral family that we both gravitate towards for the most part).

But enough about our results. Head over and take the HomeGoods StyleScope quiz yourself and let us know what you think of your results. Our fingers are crossed that they’re right on for you because we love HomeGoods a little too much around Casa Petersik and we’re hoping they nail it for someone, even if that lucky someone can’t be us (did I just hear Sherry sniffle from the other room?). Oh HomeGoods why have you forsaken mislabeled us?
Psst- Wanna take more fun (and possibly semi-accurate) decorating style quizzes? Here are a few oldie but goodies: Sproost, Ikea, Creative Youniverse.

So I was “Country Casual”, which is what I strive to be, so that made me pretty happy! But my Happy Home Colors were the same as yours?????
Another “Earthy Casual”. It describes me to a T! I always try to fight my natural instinct to decorate this way, but I guess I should just give in :)
The test hit the nail on the head for me! This is SOOO me! Thanks for posting it!
Laura, you are an Earthy Casual
You’re interested in creating a welcoming home where people feel comfortable and happiness flourishes. You appreciate the warmth and individuality of natural materials and handcrafted things and are inspired by colors and forms from nature. You love mixing up different textures and are sensitive to the tactile qualities of objects. Your style is grounded and solid, not flighty or frilly. And you are never taken in by the trend of the moment.
You value comfort. Your home is a warm and open friendly place, and you feel happiest when everyone is cared for and relaxed in your space. Elements like pillows, throws, overstuffed furniture, and good lighting set the mood. You may also enjoy layering different fabrics or mixing patterns to create a cozy effect.
Dramatic modern. How appropriate! I’m a sucker for bold colors (no matter how often I try to stay clean with white and neutrals) mixed in with modern furnishings.
Great quiz, guys!
I actually found this quiz last week and wasn’t very impressed despite my high hopes (I share a similar obsession with Home Goods!)
I was labeled “country casual”…I can sort of see this in my style, but I’d like to think of myself more as updated farmhouse. And my happy home colors were the same as yours too! Admittedly, I have some yellow accents throughout, but none of the other colors really suited me. I was also hoping for more inspiration photos instead of just a description.
Oh well…better luck next quiz.
I love these tests, even if they aren’t totally true. However, I found mine to be pretty accurate: Bohemian Casual
You are interested in creating a place where people feel relaxed. You have a variety of interests and influences and so appreciate different styles, cultures, and objects. Your home is cozy, with comfy chairs, throw pillows and places to set a drink or a book. But it also feels creative and visually intriguing, because you have an artist’s eye that allows you to find objects that appeal to you in a unique and personal way—whether from your travels or from a local shop. This gives your home a feeling of being laid-back, and maybe even a bit quirky with its mix of pieces—some of which are classic, some handmade, some ethnic, and some just rich in meaning to you.
You value serenity. While there are probably a lot of interesting things in your home, they are joined by your taste or a certain palette that keeps them in harmony. You appreciate the beauty in simple forms. Whether fancy or plain, you appreciate things that are well made and function as well as they look. You also have a strong respect for the environment and craftsmanship. You care about how things are made, and how they are used.
Don’t worry about the label Sherry if the description mostly fits. I got “Earth Modern” and was immediately repelled by the thought of being labeled bohemian. But the description fit and I changed it for myself to say solid and sleek.
Earthy Casual seems to fit pretty well. I’m jealous of you people who got happy colors like green, blue, purple… I got that orange-yellow palette that looks like a Burger King. I’m also extremely jealous of people who live near a HomeGoods store! We’re 150 miles away! But only 15 minutes from IKEA, so that’s something…
Hey Lisa,
Can you believe that we haven’t made it out there yet? Too busy with basement stuff and baby-announcement traveling (we recently road tripped to NY and back). But we did hit up our favorite HomeGoods near Ikea (outside of DC) quite recently so we got our fix!
xo,

So I was also Earthy Casual, which is pretty accurate, but somehow the colour palette is the same as your Elegant Classic. Not sure how that works – especially since (aside from the yellow) they are NOT my happy colours. I think there’s room for improvement on their quiz.
Cool quiz! I got “Glamorous Classic” and it’s very fitting for my design aesthetic.
You have a refined sensibility with an appreciation for history and tradition in your furniture and your rooms. You value beauty and craftsmanship. You are visually sensitive and understand how symmetry and a balanced layout give order to a room. But you definitely like to shake things up with some unabashed luxury and glamour to keep things from getting boring. You go for rich materials like velvets, one-of-a-kind objects, lady-like touches, glimmering accessories, and a sense of old-Hollywood romance that makes your home dramatic and elegant.
You value order. You feel happiest if your home is well organized. You understand that when your house is in order, your mind feels clearer. Rather than a lot of meaningless objects or overly-designed items, you are happier with a few well-placed things. Your home is your respite from a busy life. Try to avoid letting things into your home that you don’t really love.
I don’t know how you guys do it, but I love-Love-LOVE how you post quizzes with the clear clean pictures straight from the website.
Any chance you’d like to share how you do that?! Is it a screen shot, or some super-techy skills you guys have taught yourself?!
Any tips would be helpful and veeeery appreciated :)
(you can tell me on here, or to my e-mail…)
Thanks!!
Hey Cassie,
We just take screen shots and sometimes merge two of them together (like our quiz results) using Photoshop. Nothing too high tech at all! Hope it helps!
xo,

Earthy Casual with a palette of greens, purples and blues, and lots of outdoor rooms… yep, that’s our beach house!
mine was perfect…country classic
You have a naturally refined sensibility with an appreciation for tradition and history. You value beauty, craftsmanship, and family heirlooms, but you like to open things up with pretty, easy-going pieces like painted wood or distressed furniture, lovely florals and other patterns, and bunches of fresh flowers that give your home a breezy, relaxed feeling. You love unique finds, have a thrifty, creative side, and can make these things work together.
You value comfort. Your home is a warm and open friendly place, and you feel happiest when everyone is cared for and relaxed in your space. Elements like pillows, throws, overstuffed furniture, and good lighting set the mood. You may also enjoy layering different fabrics or mixing patterns to create a cozy effect.
is it sad that i recognized some of the picture from domino? and i could even tell you whose house they were from? ha!
I had the same problem! I took this quiz a month or so ago . . . and I got the elegant classic, but I think I’m more an earthy casual girl. Or at least I’d like to be. Boo!
Mine got it exactly! I got global casual which is exactly what I’m going for :)
the ideas were not very helpful, but the description was dead on!
This was a huge fail for me. My “happy house colors” are shades of blue, which I love, but I don’t want my house to be that color (been there, done that), and it was apparently chosen solely because I picked the blue hydrangea arrangement as my favorite.
I got “Bohemian Casual”, which fits well. I think it’s a nicer way of saying “slob with at least some style” :-) My colors were the same as you guys, though.
I got Glamourous Classic and the description is pretty much my style spot on! The happy home colours (reds, mauves), however, were totally off! Nevermind, a bit of fun! Love the quizzes!
I got Bohemian Casual. The “Bohemian” threw me because I am so not the girl in the long skirts or peasant shirts. But the description did seem very accurate:

Definitely the comfort part was right. But my color palette was weird, too. All yellows and oranges. I guess they did get the gold right, though.
I got Glamourous Classic with happy colors: soft grays. Eeh, not really right but a fun quiz to take.
I’m “Country Classic” which is pretty darn close to what I am.. My happy colors are in the yellow/tan/rust range and I suppose you could say that’s pretty “close”… after all, my house is Cabbage Patch yellow on the outside…BUT…my house is green inside with every room a different shade.(yeah..I’m a “green freak”)
These quizzes are fun…it’s interesting to see how each one interprets things just a bit differently.
I’m something Eclectic, forgot already. I have been to the new Home Goods in Short Pump and it is unbelievable. I want to move in!
I am “Earthy Casual”, pretty true except im not into “earthy” things such as nature in my home, just a few plants thats it :)

Sounds like they’re mixed up! I definitely identify more with Elegant Classic (more like elegant classic casual if I had my way?) but ended up with Earthy Casual, which, which its focus on natural textures, sounds more like the Petersik house.
Sorry the quiz was off for you! I got Earthy Casual, which makes me sound like a big hippy or something, but when I read the description it was pretty dead-on. (And it sounds JUST like you two!!!) The color palette they showed (while lacking the greens I’ve got in some rooms) was the color palette in every room of my house (as well as most of your rooms! think dark browns, soft neutrals, and gray-ish blues). I think they chose horrible names for these things, though!
Holy smokes, could that have been any more accurate? It was totally on – even pinpointing my favorite colors. I was Classic Elegant, too, guys. But I felt like the description is exactly my ideal. Now, if the worn out wood floors and sparkly toilet seats would just get the memo ;)
Thanks for the link! You know I’m a total sucker for style quizzes.
XO,
Jacci
I got Earthy modern, which is kind of right, but not really. The part that really threw me off, though, was the “happy home colors.” Mine were all reds, corals, and pinks! With the exception of my dining room, the rest of my house is blues and greens… not red. I assume it’s because I chose the roses as my arrangement. I like the pop of color in the roses, but you wouldn’t ever find pink or coral in my house!
However, I found this to be right on: You keep up with culture, style, and trends, but have an appreciation for timeless forms and simple lines. I think that’s pretty much me.
I did love the IKEA quiz, though. I found it to be more accurate than the other ones.
I got Glamorous Classic and I totally agree. My current home doesn’t totally reflect this style, but it’s what I strive for it to be.
I got Earthy Casual with a palate of blues … exactly what I am / strive to be, although our house looks pretty hodge podge since we are in the early stages of decorating.
Mine is definitely right—dramatic modern. It would be cooler if they linked you to a matching product page. I’ve never been to a HomeGoods because there isn’t one in nyc. Maybe I can convince my husband we should go on a field trip. How does price compare to stores like Ikea and Target?
I got “Bohemian Casual”

Love my happy home colors! http://www.homegoods.com/images/quiz_ColorWhite.gif
I too am classified as Elegant Classic. Good stuff because I hate when there is too much going on in a room. Nice clean lines, a small dazzle of inspiration…ahhh…
Thanks for the link. I’m forwarding on to my girlfriends (which I’m sure they will be thankful for too!)
Well, it said I was “Country Casual”. I’ve heard this before and it makes me cringe thinking about goose covered wallpaper from my childhood! In my mind, I think I’m more “Sophisticated Cottage”, if that exists. But truthfully, with a 2 year-old and an 8 month old we’re more “Toddler Chic”! Everything has to be able to withstand what our kids can dish out. It’s been interesting to see how our decorating/design needs have evolved as our children have grown.
Global Modern – right on the nail head. With a nice palette of earthy grays and browns. That’s me, all over. And my design challenge: Organize! Which is super correct also. I’m taking inspiration from your reader redesign a few weeks ago. The people with the awesome mud room!
I’m Country Classic. I’d say it’s pretty much spot-on!
Christa, you are a Country Classic

I know I’m late on this, but it nailed me!
Amber, you are an Earthy Modern
You keep up with culture, style, and trends, but have an appreciation for timeless forms and simple lines. You value good design, quality craftsmanship, and prefer the streamlined to the overly embellished or cluttered. You also appreciate the warmth and individuality of natural materials and handcrafted things and are inspired by colors and forms from nature. This contrast is what makes your home intriguing and comfortable. You love mixing up different textures and are sensitive to the tactile qualities of objects. Your style is grounded and solid, not flighty or frilly.
You value order. You feel happiest if your home is well organized. You understand that when your house is in order, your mind feels clearer. I got “Earthy Casual” and although I am NOT into decorating (I’d rather cut tile and lay a floor…), I must say the description fits me to a T. I crave order!!!
