Pop Quiz: Ethan Allen
It’s been a while since we’ve enjoyed a fun little online “Find Your Style” quiz (like these ones from Sproost, Ikea and Creative Youniverse) so I went on a Googling spree this week and found a similar quiz from Ethan Allen, which you can take right here.
Like others before it, it uses your photo selections to calculate your “style type” and then dish up some appropriate inspiration photos. The spin on this one is that it plays like a fast word association game, but instead of words it’s a “pick the picture that grabs you first” kind of thing. It took us each a whopping 45 seconds to complete. Nice.
I was told my style is “Loft,” which is energetic, fashion-driven and practical. One look in my closet can tell you how off that middle descriptor is. But I do agree with appreciating functionality and industrial materials. And by “exploring” my style more (don’t forget to keep clicking to get to photos of rooms they think you’ll like) I got six “style portfolios” that fall under the Loft category – like the feminine Marzipan (thumbs down for me) or the clean West Side portfolio (thumbs up). Overall, it was definitely fun and many of the images and descriptions they pinned as “my style” were spot on.
Sherry, on the other hand, got “Global” which initially felt totally off (just look at her bare passport)…
But the notes about tropical touches (she does love a botanical) along with wood tones and natural fibers seem a bit more in line (plus the little thumbnails shown on the bottom of the screen grab above really did appeal to Sherry, so that was super accurate). And actually the room portfolios were pretty darn close as well. The most interesting part to me? Her secondary style was “Loft.” I guess Ethan Allen thinks we’re a good match.
Here’s that link again to take Ethan Allen’s What’s Your Style quiz. And as usual, we’d love to hear about your results and how accurate or off-base they may be. Have fun!

I got estate which fits me perfectly!!
Spooky- I got “Country House”- which is totally me. But Ethan Allen’s description of Country House is a little more high-brow than my reality.
ETHAN ALLEN:
“Neoclassic, grand living – where breakfast in bed is a ritual, not a reward, and first impressions last forever”
Unfortunately, the first impression that would last forver is piles of laundry waiting to be folded and dog hair everywhere.
They don’t really have enough different styles. My style isn’t even represented! My style is eclectic but with a definite arts and crafts/mission element.
They put my style in as “glamour”. Pfft. Not even close! The only thing glamourous about me is my daughter!
Who knew my verdict would be VILLA – thought I was loft as well but hey-ho.
The verdict is in—your style is Villa. Villa is romance reinvented. A high-end “decorator” look. Refined without fuss. Serene yet strong. Pedigreed while also modern. Inspired by French and Scandinavian design. A mingling of carved woods. handcrafted artisanship, and the dressmaker detail.
This online portfolio shows your style. Brought to life in rooms. A subtle mix of furniture, accessories, and attitude. Different “looks.” Because every home should be unique. Come see.
My hubby and I both got “estate” which sounds fine and we’ve already been discovering that we have very similar tastes in how we want our home to look. But the sample rooms Ethan Allen suggests are no where near what I like! I like pieces here and there like a chair or pillow or lighting – but over all the rooms seems very high brow and not me, or my hubby, at all.
My Style is Glamour. Not sure that it fits my style, but some of it does.
My style is global! Which is a good thing right? I am hoping that it means eclectic, because that’s where I see my design style right now.
My style is metro. Totally accurate. Modern, minimal, put together, clean. I can’t stand an unfinished or cluttered space!
But the reality is I’m totally unorganized and still working on remodeling the rooms in my home…*sigh*
I’ll get where I want to be–I hope!
I decided to take it again and it has some different pictures. Now I’m Global. That is more my style. ;)
I ended up with VILLA as well. I think it is fine, although I find the summary sentence, ‘A high-end “decorator” look.’ a teensy bit insulting.
I’m curious to hear what the summary for “Estate” would be.
I got Metro…
The verdict is in—your style is Metro. Metro is a great modern space. Chic, comfortable, clean. Do the math. Strong horizontals plus graphic clarity plus a fearless blending of metal, woods, leathers, and wovens; minus the superfluous and the clichéd; equals urban architecture domesticated, a vision for living.
Not too bad and a great distraction from work
I got villa but I feel like my “style” changes seasonally so I bet if I took that quiz in summer I’d be something else. Fun stuff though, thanks!
I got “Glamour” which suits me perfectly! And they say Loft is my second style, which is true also for the bedrooms anyway. I liked that quiz, it was nifty.
Loved the quiz! There is also a quick quiz from home goods http://www.homegoods.com/hghq_quiz.asp
I got metro:

Seems pretty dead-on to me. I loved the “groove” portfolio.
I got Loft and my “you may also like” is Global. Sounds pretty accurate.
I got “Loft”. Not sure that their choices represent what I think of as loft.
I looked through the choices and I would make up my own category of “Eclectic” because I like some things from Loft, Estate, Glamour and Country House.
How in the world in Loft do they have “west side” (sorry John, but yuck) and Marzipan (better but still not my style) in the same category?
I got glamour with a back up of estate. somehow I think this is wrong.
I did it again and got loft and metro. It has no test-retest reliability!
I got “villa.” Ew. I know my style though. Rustic, through and through.
Thanks for sharing the quiz. I got “glamour,” which is so me!
Metro. Especially liked the sample rooms. Most of them I didn’t go for but the Savvy Metro room was spot on. I love dark wood and bold color. Fun. Thanks!
Hmmmm. Forgive me, but call me a skeptic on this one. I got “Metro” on my first go-round, which is ~kind of~ correct — but it doesn’t mix in enough of non-modern stuff. Then on the second go-round, I got “Villa” — which is waaaay off. Too fussy. The pictures change, by the way — so I’m thinking I was reacting as much to room color as I was to anything (I’m drawn to lighter tones). Bottom line is: I’m eclectic when it comes to decor.
BTW — the “Metro” thing was right to some degree. My latest score a couple of days ago at the local Target was two GORGEOUS mirrored side tables (been looking for something mirrored for a while now). Only $95 each, but I got one of them for $80 because the knob on the drawer was missing. (I’m going to replace the knobs anyway.) Run, don’t walk, to your local Target if you like this sort of thing….
Mine was global with “you may also like” Loft, which I think is very accurate!
This was so fun!! I got Glamour with a side of Metro… love it!
Okay, first I got Estate. Then I went on to look at the photos that they said typified Estate and well, I didn’t like the look of Estate.
So I took the quiz again. Different photos were offered this time. Again, I selected the ones that grabbed me.
And then Villa was my result. And again, I didn’t like the look of Villa.
Maybe I should take this quiz ten or twenty times and average the results.
I got Global as well. I do love a good trip, and a good souvenir. And I definitely mix furniture- there is nary a matching piece in my house I believe, nor is that what I lean toward. My secondary is Villa, and I would love it if my style taste made people think “pedigreed while also modern”. Pretty accurate, and inspiring!
The verdict is in—your style is County House. Country House is a timeless world rooted in history. Inspired by the grand houses of Europe. Confident layering of pattern, texture, color, and shape. As if carefully collected over many years. For the antique lover with a taste for modern comfort.
That suits me. I have a combination of antique pieces we have collected over the years and comfortable upholstered pieces. I love adding lots of color and texture to my more neutral large pieces of furniture. I mix abstract and modern art with my antiques all the time. Pretty good predicter!
I thought yours were spot on from the website. But when I tried out the quiz a LOT of the pictures it asked me to choose from didn’t appeal to me, so I had to pick the best of two bads. But the end result was so dead on it was scary! I got Metro and a “you may also like” Glamour. Urban and chic, and never cliche. My first thought was my favorite magazine.. Metropolitan Home. They even had a “Glamour” special! I don’t think any quiz could ever top this one!
I got glamour which I thought was hilarious. My husband loves all things I cal froof. I hate froof, jewelry, shiny, goldish, sparkly, yuck. That is what comes to mind when it said glamour.
BUT reading the descriptions:
“..symmetrical, neutrals with warm pops of color…Understated opulence — polished to a high gloss and surprisingly light and airy.”
So..maybe so!
I took it twice, the first time I got ‘Global’ with the second suggestion of ‘Country House’. The second time (different pictures) I got ‘Country House’ with a side of ‘Global’! I’d definitely say both are right on the money.
I got “estate” which is excatly my style!
I’ll have to give this a try!! I just found your blog about a month ago – it is amazing. All the resources and ideas!! WOW!! I have a question that I can’t find info on and would like your opinion. What about paint sheen??? I was raised with “Semi-gloss” is best. I know it is all about personal preference. But I recently painted my new craft room. Love the color but something was off. I then realized that while I advanced my thinking to going with a satin sheen and not the standard semi-gloss, my sample paint was flat — only flat is available in the sample bottles. I have a “fear” of flat paint – it doesn’t wipe clean – or atleast it never used to. What is “popular” now – what is a good choice to go with when painting walls and does it matter which room you are painting? Thanks!!!!
Hey SusanMC,
Good question! We love flat paint for all rooms other than bathrooms and kitchens (it’s come a long way and is quite durable and lovely these days) and for kitchens and baths we stick to semi-gloss for super wipeable protection. Hope it helps!

I got Global, and my runner up is Glamour. Pretty accurate, I think!
I loved this fun quiz!!! I felt like it pegged me right away. I got ‘Metro’ to describe my taste and ‘Estate’ as something I might also like.
Now if I could only afford it all!
I got: “Country House”, which was spot on for me.
Description: A timeless world rooted in history. Inspired by the grand houses of Europe. Confident layering of pattern, texture, color, and shape. As if carefully collected over many years. For the antique lover with a taste for modern comfort.
Exactly how my house is furnished now. Nice quiz algorithm!
i took the quiz twice because i completely disagreed with the first answer of “Estate”. i notice that the pictures to select from change each time you take the quiz. the second time there were actually pics where i had definite likes for the images, unlike the first time where i had to select which item i disliked the least.
the second time i ended up “Global” which is pretty spot on when i look at the portfolios.
I got Glamor with a back up of Metro. I wasn’t so sure about the glamor until I read it. It seems like a mix of Asian and classic styles, which is definitely me. Throw in the Metro side of it, and it’s pretty darn perfect.
I got estate. I am looking forward to looking through all the pics when I have more time. My first runner up was villa…we’ll see which fits me best! :)
LOL…………..I took the quiz 5 times!
After reading some comments first I decided to do more of a sampling.
I always got Metro, but the “you may also like” changed each time. They were all different: Loft, Country House (ewww), Estate, Villa and Global. Fun quiz……thanks for sharing!
Hey guys! I just discovered your blog last night and have spent the better part of yesterday and today reading it….I’m obsessed! I’m completely clueless when it comes to any kind of decorating/pairing color schemes so this will be a great resource for me. Just one question: how in the world did you guys get so good at this if neither one of you studied it in school???
Hey Erin,
Thanks so much for the kind words! And we’re so glad you found us. But now to get to your question: we’re true believers in learning as you go and sussing out your style to “unlock” that perfect combination of materials and colors and objects that makes you happy from the moment you step in the door. We definitely didn’t get it all right the first time (here’s a fun post about how our style sort of evolved as we went). But it’s amazing what passion and taking an interest in something can “awaken” in you. It definitely showed us that we can do anything we set our minds to. Especially with practice, practice, practice. And I must admit that my art school background probably helped immensely (I learned about color pairings, proportions, mixing and matching, composition, and even took photography classes and window design classes that helped me learn how to “set a scene” and capture it) while John’s background in film and photoshop also definitely helped when it came to having a point of view and a vision. Plus his mathiness is amazing for space planning so that’s pretty handy too. Hope that helps!

I did the quiz twice and got “glamour” both times! I would have never thought myself to have a glamourous style. Fun quiz :)
I did this about a week ago, and I also took some other quizzes. I got “Loft” on the Ethan Allen quiz as well. According to the quiz results I got, my style is modern-eclectic. (which is very true)
I wish my hubby would take these quizzes too!!!
Global..interesting. It’s opened my eyes to some new items though!
Holy toledo, they (those Ethan Allen people) think I am a loft! This can’t be, I am not Lofty….I think I am more Villa, or global or even Country over Loft. Well, maybe it’s time for a change.
First time I got Metro, second time Loft. Maybe the third time’s a charm, and it’ll be spot on!
I got “glamour” but I might also like “loft”. I think loft is more my taste.
my style is glamour… :) fabulous darling, just fabulous! love your blog!
My style was Estate (hrmm….) and Glamour….wow! I didn’t see those comin’, but I was happy about it. I wonder how many different choices there are?
I got VILLA, but don’t like any of Ethan Allen’s recommendations lol!
