Burning Question: Over it?
This week’s question is sure to start a rousing debate. We’re talking about toilet paper ladies and gentlemen. When you put your TP on the dispenser do you intentionally place it so the paper comes over the roll or under it? Or are you one of those people who just doesn’t care either way? We’ve heard people proclaim that there is definitely a right way and a wrong way to dispense toilet paper so chime in about where you stand (or sit) on the subject of TP.
And speaking of toilet paper, here’s a post full of a fun ways to keep those extra rolls on hand without junking up the bathroom. Good times.

Over, definitely. If I see it any other way, I will switch it. Even at work!
Definitely OVER!!! It is just easier to see where it starts and it just looks nicer.
OVER!!
I have changed rolls at other peoples houses before. Over. Over. Over.
It’s definitely over, that’s how I always put it on. However if someone else put it on under, I wouldn’t change it. I’d just be confused for a few seconds every time I go to use the restroom. HAHA. Blonde moment.
Over! It bugs me when I am in a public restroom or at someone elses house and the tp is rolling under… I guess I have a slight case of OCD. I will sometimes flip it, but not always, it depends on where I’m at.
We have to keep ours in a closed cabinet above the toilet so our cats don’t have a hay day with it. There’s nothing more annoying than to come home and find an entire roll of toilet paper unrolled and shredded all over your bathroom. We just have to always remember to get the toilet paper down before you go…
OVER! And I will change it if it’s not correct. ;)
Over.
OVER!!! There isn’t another way. I have to change it if I am at someone’s house and see that it is going under..it bugs me (I know, very silly)!!
OVER! I remember when I was really young seeing a game show (for some reason I think it was a repeat of The Newlywed Game) where they said a survey revealed that most upper class people are Team Over and lower class are Team Under. Not sure how or why… but this middle class person prefers over :)
OVER- I have kids and It is hard for them to reach and putting it under would be even harder.
Over.
I’m one of those people that I guess are OCD about it it drives me insance if it’s under. At my house I will always change it to be over, and get mad at who ever does it under. I sometimes even change it at other places, but I try not to do that bc I understand some people may be crazy about it udner just like I am over so they can have it their way in their house/bathroom.
I was told before that the right way Is under though…
Always always ALWAYS over! I’m about 50-50 on whether I will switch the roll around in someone else’s house, depends on my mood, but if my boyfriend puts it on “wrong” (if he puts it on at all), I always switch it in our house. This is a discussion I’ve had with many people and am amused it’s coming up here…
Over, over, over!! Fortunately, my hubby and I agree on this so there are no toilet paper wars in our home (trust me, if he put it under it would tick me off).
Over! I hate fumbling around for the edge when its under.
OVER!I don’t like it the other way.
i just put it on……it is like a surprise when i go to pull to see which way it turns!
i am very particular with most things around the house but this one just seems silly to care about. but man oh man who knew there were so many officers in the TP police!
The correct answer is ….. OVER.
How else do you find the end?
Isn’t this a funny thing for so many people to be passionate about!!1
over always always always over
There is definitely a right and wrong way to do this! It must be OVER! To me, the other way is backwards and wrong. Always been a pet-peeve of mine!
As long as someone puts a new roll on and doesn’t leave the other hanging w/no TP to be found, we’re ok w/either way; though an old college roomie swore that Over was correct, and come behind me to fix it. HMMM, it does seem to work better when it’s over on one of the out-of-bed-in-complete-darkness bathroom trips. Pretty annoying when you’re spinning it like a pottery wheel w/no end to be found in the dark!
I have to have the end over the top of the roll so I don’t have to fish around to find it. It’s always easily accessible. No offense to the people that like to have the end “hidden”, but really, seriously, it’s a roll of toilet paper, having the end hidden doesn’t make it prettier.
But my biggest pet peeve isn’t the direction of the roll, but people who leave 3 squares on the tube when a new roll is readily available. Who uses only 3 squares? Just toss it and replace it.
Put it on the holder yourself if it’s such a big deal jeez! Over. When I remember to put it on.
I used to not care about it at all, then I moved in with my husband. He is very passionate about putting the toilet paper so that it hangs over like a waterfall. He says it is not natural for it to hang under.
I actually saw an episode of Oprah that was all about etiquette, and they said that putting the paper over was the proper way to do it. I like it better that way too. It seems easier to unroll for some reason! I had to teach my husband that one!! ha ha
Definitely under. My cats prefer over, so they can pull it all off the roll and leave a mess in the bathroom. That’s why I prefer under!!!
Over! How do you even find the end when it is under!
I always hang it under, my husband always hangs it over. I found it interesting, so I made sure to check our parents’ houses and it seems we each got it from our mothers.
I think it looks best over…
Unfortunately because of cats and children I hang it under…
What really happens in that my honey can’t figure out how to slide it over the open bar holder that we have so it usually ends up torn to shreds on the floor, condoloences of the cat. OR, unrolled to the cardboard, thanks to a curious three year old.
Definitely over! And if I’m in someone’s house and see it the other way I will flip it.
OVER! And, I often switch it at other’s houses. I really hate a public restroom where the paper is UNDER and the paper is locked such that I can’t switch it. But, that probably means much less unsanitary touching, so I should learn to live with it.
OVER.
Anyone who does it the other way is WRONG. Including my boyfriend, who always hangs it under. Ha. Similar to Kelly, we both got this from our parents. In the nature/nurture debate, toilet paper hanging is DEFINITELY a nurture thing.
Under would not be a good idea in the middle of the night. I’d probably curse so much from not being able to find it that i’d wake my husband…not a good idea!! Oprah says over the top because it tears cleanly. I suppose if you’re worried about that it would be another argument for over. Lastly, European hotels do the little fold into a triangle thing when the loo is cleaned so you’d need the over orientation to do that too. Fun topic!!
definitely over, and it seems like I’m in the majority here. :) I can’t help but flip the roll around if it’s hanging under – anal much?
Before I started putting the TP on a basket above the toilet I used to always put in under. Call me crazy, but I feel that if it’s over that too much paper rolls out at once.
Under. I know I’m in the minority, but the cats unroll it otherwise and I don’t find it difficult to find the end.
The way I figure it, in your house, you put it on the way you want.
Over! If hubby puts it on wrong, I fix it. It tears cleaner when it’s hung over.
Our bathroom was remodeled by someone who didnt think about where to put the toilet paper unfortunately so we are forced to keep it on top of the toilet :-)However if given the wonderful choice-definitely over!
It has to be over, otherwise when you get up in the night to pee and flap at the roll, all the toilet paper would unwind onto the floor. Now that would make me grumpy.
Over. It PISSES me off when it’s under. When it’s under, it’s harder to get at and if you accidentally yank it too much, it just goes everywhere (and usually ends up hanging into the trash basket or something). But, sometimes, it’ll sit on the counter for a day or two before it makes it onto the roll, depends how busy I am ;).
OVER, thank goodness, it’s not just me!
OVER.
OVER…it HAS to be. It’s just not right any other way. :)
OVER!! It drives me nuts when it is under. I am so glad others agree because my fiance does it the other way and he just doesn’t see the big deal! lol
Whew, a lot of people are sure passionate about their TP! I normally put it over, although I wouldn’t switch it if it was under. I used to put it under though when our cats were younger, as they would unravel and shred the whole roll. Luckily they grew out of it…
Long answer to a simple question . . . I always preferred “under” until I did a bathroom renovation when I switched to preferring “over.” The new reason for preferring over was obvious to me – I didn’t want any hands going near the new paint job and the over position keeps the toilet paper farther from the wall. But then I started to wonder why I previously preferred under and it bugged me before I figured it out! In previous bathrooms (and especially when I was a child), the placement of the toilet paper holder on the wall was usually too high for me. I found it easier to pull from the under position because of the angle out into the room rather than back into the wall. I think this was especially true in commercial bathrooms where sometimes I would really have to pull hard to get any toilet paper to come out of those God-awful dispensers!
I’m a “Who cares!” person. Honestly, not to be rude, I think this is one of the most ridiculous things to care about – EVER. It works either way.
This definitely should be a poll!!
OVER, WITHOUT A DOUBT!
(Yes, it required me to yell it!)
Over and lid down, thankyouverymuch. I am also on board with who wants to see the inside of the toilet bowl? And guests that leave the lid up drive me crazy. If you found the lid down isn’t it polite to put back down when you leave? : P Husband grew up in a house where whoever went last left toilet as is – seat up, lid up, seat down, lid up…whatever. Urgh. Took him a month but he really did try to put seat and lid down because he knew how much it bothered me, gotta love that!
Over. Always over. I even change other people’s to over.
