Fab Freebie: Skulloween

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

We began getting into the Halloween spirit last week (and there’s more where that came from) so we thought we’d use this week’s freebie to give one lucky person to chance to add some serious spook to their space. And we’re doing it thanks to two of our favorite collaborators: Skull-A-Day and Cardboard Safari.

Skull-A-Day is the brainchild of our good friend Noah Scalin. His yearlong project of creating skulls out of ordinary (pencils, rice) and not-so-ordinary (butterflies, vegemite) materials begat a Webby-award winning website, a book, art exhibits, an appearance on Martha Stewart and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. And now this local celeb is offering up two skull-tastic art prints for one lucky reader – the United Skull of America print (it’s a skull made out of US states!) and an Ornamental Skull print (in all of its ornate glory) – which will both bring some eerie style to your home this month (and the other eleven if you’re so inclined).

Plus, this week’s winner will score two great pieces from Cardboard Safari, who you may remember from their rhino / rocket giveaway a few months ago. This time they’re dishing out their Halloween designs – the spooky skull wreath and the tabletop puzzle skull (which was designed by Noah, btw). Both are made from recycled cardboard, in your choice of brown or white (which can also be painted any color you please).

Wanna score this eerily entertaining gift pack? Here’s how:

SKULL ME!!

I was a bunch of grapes once when I was a kid…tons of purple balloons. It was very difficult to get in and out of the car is all I remember! And it was a hit!

Now I’m just always ‘dead.’ :) Using makeup…not much to my costume, just dead makeup, ha!

SKULL ME

i absolutely love halloween!!! Two years ago I was Stephen’s King Carrie and i had so much fun painting blood all over my hair (wig of course) and face. My friend’s young daughter, who would get easily scared, i had to tell her I was painting and i got a little messy! LOL

SKULL ME

My favorite costume of all time…the scariest was the year that my little sister was little red riding hood and i took her trick or treating as the big bad wolf. Later that night, my parents went to a party in the same costumes. My mother wore the costume as little red riding whore and dad wore the big bad wolf mask.

SKULL ME!

My husband kids me that I have 2 basic costumes I recycle each year, yet he loves to get into the crazy contacts and evil makeup. We’ll probably pull our the Halloween decor this weekend and carve some pumpkins. I will try the bats AND the idea w/the bleeding candles. FUN FUN

My favorite costume was a sexy witch when I was 85lbs. heavier. It’s now one of my “before” pictures :)
I really like the skulls because I’m reentering my radiologic career — and they’re a fun reminder!

SKULL ME!!

I used to be something crazy every year when I was in elementary school. I got all my ideas from the “American Girl” catalogs. One year I was candy buttons (styrafoam board and cut-in-half and spray painted balls), another year I was jelly beans (colored balloons and a trash bag), and once I was a picnic table (cheap plastic “blanket” with plates, cups, chips, etc. glued to it).

Not sure what I’ll be this year…but I hope it’s as fun/creative as my old costumes :)

I love dressing up for halloween. I went to college at Kent state Univ, which goes all out for halloween every year, so I have had the opportunity to see and Wear quite a few interesting halloween costumes, Ranging from one of 3 blind mice to a golden goddess, but my favorite costume was as a casualty from Hitchcock’s “the Birds”. I bought several white christmas doves from the local craft store and spray painted them black. I attached one (minus it’s head) to a head band, one to a wire hanger that made it look like it was flying at me, and a third (again minus it’s head) safety pinned to my back. Of course I had fake blood and cuts everywhere as well as tears in my cloths. It was great!

Skull me:
My favorite costumes were my friend and I dressing
as Icarus and Daedalus (who flew too close to the sun).
We made wings out of waxed paper (took all day) and
I went so far as to burn my set (I was Icarus). Thank God
I did it over the bathtub-I almost burned my fool house down.
I don’t recommend anyone trying at home. We did win a
prize, though!

Last year my boyfriend and I were both French maids. It was very silly!

SKULL ME!
i remember being a harem girl when i was younger and feeling sooo glamorous with the headdress. i thought i was ultra cool.

SKULL ME! I heart halloween!

SKULL ME! I was once a table – picture a cardboard box resting on my shoulders, my head popping out the top. I had a hairnet on, into which we weaved green tissue paper so my head was the salad bowl in the middle of the table!

SKULL ME!

My favorite Halloween costumes are for the kid set & nothing terribly creative: when I was young and Rubiks cubes were all the rage… we spray painted a box and used black electrical tape to designate the cubes. And I could wear my big warm puffy jacket underneath =) When my guys were younger and wanted to wear a costume to school they would just wear black jeans & a black t-neck that I hand-stitched red, yellow & green felt circles on… adorable COMFORTABLE traffic signals!

SKULL ME!!! Man oh man, I love skulls! We have them around our house year round. :)

hmmm… My favorite Costume from Halloween was when my husband and I dressed up as germans. He had leiderhosen on and high socks and everything! It was awesome!

SKULL ME!!!

2 years ago my husband and i were the white stripes, and i think we did a pretty good job of impersonating jack and meg! my lLEAST favorite costume was from when i was about 4 years old and my mom made me dress up as raggedy ANDY (because we already had the costume) but i’m a girl and i wanted to be raggedy ANNE. i was miserable and cried the whole night.

Skull Me! My favorite costume is by far my homemade tinkerbell costume.

SKULL ME!

Ever since I was a little kid (and before, I assume), my mom would go crazy with decorating the house and yard for each and every holiday. Halloween always brought out the spookiness in her, and our house would be complete with a mock graveyard, including ghosts. Since I’ve moved away, I’ve been a bit limited in my small apartment decoration (though my roommate must be commended for her Halloween enthusiasm!). I can’t wait to have my own yard to go crazy with!

SKULL ME!

I think the best year was when I just wore my Ren Fest costume. But I had to have my mom lace me into the corset LOL.

SKULL ME!!
when my husband and i were first dating and moving in together, i was going through his clothes and found a huge piece of cloth with “hanes” written on the band… when i asked what in the heck it was he said that he went as a dirty diaper for halloween one year and never got rid of the costume! it was hilarious… and shocked me that he could dyi it too!

SKULL ME! Halloween is my favorite!

SKULL ME!

Maybe not the weirdest in the world, but I don’t go crazy with Halloween costumes due to the costume I had in kindergarten. It was a blue dinosaur with green spots. A stegasarous to be exact. And it had a tail. A BIG tail. I couldn’t sit down in my tiny kindergartener seat, which made my day bad enough. But, then, the kindergarteners got to walk up and down the hall and show all of the older kids our costumes. I officially decided I hated my costume when someone remarked, “Look at the cute little lizard!” All that trouble to be called a lizard…

Last year was my favorite Halloween because it was the first with my daughter. She was 5 months old and went as a chili pepper. I made a taco costume for myself so we coordinated. This year I am going to have a BIG belly for Halloween as I am going to be 8 months pregnant. I would love to have a clever costume that incorporates my giant mid-section – any ideas?

SKULL ME! My favorite Halloween costume was Meryl Streep as Karen Silkwood – At Halloween a few years ago I worked for an alternative weekly that did a cover story on Karen Silkwood and was inspired after watching the movie.

SKULL ME!
One of my favorite costumes was last year. My hubs and I dressed up as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for a bit of economical humor. I dressed in a tattered gown and fur with a tear-stained face. He had on a tattered suit with his empty pockets hanging out, a pizza box briefcase and taco shell wallet. We spent no money on these and we won the prize for Best Costume!

Skull Me!

I don’t know that any of mine are that fun/ unique… UNTIL NOW! I am making a Gatekeeper costume & my bf will be the Keymaster ala Ghostbusters.

SKULL ME!

My favorite costume was when I dressed as an 80′s workout instructor, complete with the leotard over the leggings, legwarmers, denim jacket, and headband! I went out of control with teasing my hair, doing the big, curled bangs, and blue eyeshadow! It was SO much fun! Even more fun was at the party when I was inspired to teach a faux-aerobics class… GOOD TIMES!

SKULL ME.

I must admit, I”ve been pretty lame about dressing up the last couple of years. Usually I’m throwing something together the week of – cowgirl, vampire, doctor. However, my husband stole the show last year when he dressed in a full on gorilla suit (he got a great deal after Halloween the year before). This year I”m going as dice to my Bunco Halloween party.

“SKULL ME”
I think I’ll be Kate Gosslin this year- talk about a scary
costume!

SKULL ME!

OMG…some of those skulls are just FAB! Thinks for the link to the Skull-a-Day blog! Super fun!

My most ridiculous costume (IMO!) is the SCRATCH & SNIFF skunk my mom dressed me as when I was five. All the other girls were witches or princesses…and then Jenn…the skunk…the SCRATCH & SNIFF skunk. Horrifying. LOL!

SKULL ME

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

SKULL ME!!

my favorite costume was a pirate wench, completely handmade by myself.

SKULL ME.

Hmmm, last year I went out as the “walk of shame.” I wore a party dress that was wrinkled and applied smudged make-up and made my hair look like it was done then slept in. Oh and I carried a clutch with pantyhose hanging out of it.

Skull me! I was Beetlejuice one year with a painted white face. I looked exactly like him – and won a Halloween party and prize.

Skull Me!

Halloween is my favorite holiday! One of my favorite Halloween costumes I’ve seen belongs to my last room mate – she decided to be a Book Worm and sewed little red mittens all the way down her dark green sweatshirt and sweatpants. Then she sewed little antenna on a black beanie, wore big nerd glasses and carried a giant hardback around all evening – she was great!!

Skull me!

I was a mail order bride one year and made my costume 100% myself!

SKULL ME! :)

When I was in grad school, one of my classmates came to a party dressed as a table, complete with a tablecloth, his head bearing a lampshade, and a clock. I asked him what he was….couldn’t imagine….and he said: “I’m ‘one night stand.’”….

SKULL ME!! I love Halloween! My fav costume was Wonder Woman!!

SKULL ME!!!

My favorite costume of all time was a “fairy princess” dress that my mom made for me. I think I wore it a couple of years in a row. She painted my face with sparkly pink and silver paint. Good times!

Skull me
I was a bull rider one year with a big blow up bull!!

“SKULL ME!”
My favorite costume of all time was Steve Urkel. It was 2nd grade and the little boy that wore it grew up to become my husband! We were married last month (15 years later!). His costume has always stuck in my head because it was when “Famiy Matters” (Steve Urkel’s nerdy self..) was on and he painted himself black and had the taped bifocals and suspenders and it was perfect. Needless to say he won the costume contest and my little heart.(Which he still does to this day) =)

Skull ME!!

Skull Me!
My favorite costume of all time was “junk food”. Pink Hostess Snoball bra, a skirt of Otter Pops, hotdog adorned tap shoes, a hat fashioned out of McDonalds food! It was so fun to make and won me the costume contest that year.

Skull me!

My mom made all of my Halloween costumes growing up, and I’m keeping the tradition strong! This means MONTHS of planning, sewing, and DIY. All of my costumes were my fave, but my dorkiest was probably Dr. Quinn, from the TV show Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, which must of come out while I was 10 or so. Not really sure why I was such a dork.

SKULL ME!

SKULL ME!!

my favorite costume is one my sister did in High school. She and her best friend went as a pair of dice!

They got big cardboard boxes, covered them in white paper and glued on black dots accordingly, It was too fun!

Scull Me!!!!

My boyfriend is going to be a working keg for Halloween this year! You can actually drink beer out of his helmut!!

SKULL ME
My favorite was Cruella DeVille! I made a cape out of cheap faux fur fabric on sale (apparently faux white fur wasn’t a hot commodity…) and used black markers to draw “spots” on it. Completed the look with a cigarette holder and all!
