Fab Freebie: Skulloween

We began getting into the Halloween spirit last week (and there’s more where that came from) so we thought we’d use this week’s freebie to give one lucky person to chance to add some serious spook to their space. And we’re doing it thanks to two of our favorite collaborators: Skull-A-Day and Cardboard Safari.
Skull-A-Day is the brainchild of our good friend Noah Scalin. His yearlong project of creating skulls out of ordinary (pencils, rice) and not-so-ordinary (butterflies, vegemite) materials begat a Webby-award winning website, a book, art exhibits, an appearance on Martha Stewart and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. And now this local celeb is offering up two skull-tastic art prints for one lucky reader – the United Skull of America print (it’s a skull made out of US states!) and an Ornamental Skull print (in all of its ornate glory) – which will both bring some eerie style to your home this month (and the other eleven if you’re so inclined).
Plus, this week’s winner will score two great pieces from Cardboard Safari, who you may remember from their rhino / rocket giveaway a few months ago. This time they’re dishing out their Halloween designs – the spooky skull wreath and the tabletop puzzle skull (which was designed by Noah, btw). Both are made from recycled cardboard, in your choice of brown or white (which can also be painted any color you please).

SKULL ME! A couple of years ago my sister was a matador and her husband was a bull. He made the best bull horns, it was great! Actually if I do win this, it will be his christmas present, he collects skulls.

I taught some undergrad math classes when I was getting my masters degree… and I had a student accuse me of dressing up as a calculator for Halloween… but, I didn’t — so there. I’m not THAT big of a nerd :)

My best friend and I went as smurfs a few years ago and painted our whole bodies blue…we topped it off with some blue material, little boys white underwear, white houseshoes & a white beanie. Glad we live in TX and it doesn’t get cold until November!

My favorite Halloween costume was my friend Kaela’s bag lady outfit. It was very realistic.
Skull me. My favorite costume was Little Red Riding Hood which my grandmother made for me when I was a little girl. It even had a basket with treats to give out. Oh, how I loved my costume and how I miss my grandmother!
Last year I wanted to be a goldfish but I am anti-store bought costumes. My artist husband went to a fabris store and I had a wig and some Martha Stewart glitter and here’s the outcome!
SKULL ME! The best Halloween costume my husband I am devised one year was to be Veronica Corningstone and Ron Burgundy from the movie Anchorman! Our friends still talk about how ridiculous and hilarious we were:)
SKULL ME! I loved being the Easter bunny. Total DIY costume, all I had to purchase was a white bunny-eared headband. Pink lipstick on the nose, black eyeliner drawn on face for whiskers, all white clothing, previously owned basket and plastic easter eggs filled w candy to hand out. Wish I had done something more creative with the eggs–filled them with hand written spooky or funny quotes/fortunes.

My favorite costume from my youth: I splattered a white sweatshirt with fake blood and then wrapped up my head and hands with bandages, caked with fake blood as well and scribbled “I love my pet bitpull” on my sweatshirt.

One year (when I was younger) I was a clown in full makeup. I ended up being allergic and my whole face was covered in a rash for about a week. Horrible experience. Since then I have only dressed in costumes that didnt require makeup!

The craziest (and my all time favorite) Halloween costume is “Left Overs”. Just wrap yourself in some Saran wrap and label yourself something fun like “Candied Yams”! People love it!

Halloween 5 years ago, my husband’s friend Amy went as Michael Jackson and he went as a little boy (complete with hobby horse and lollipop). Creepy, but funny.

My favorite Halloween costume was the year I went as a gothic chic rocker (think of a combo between Kelly Clarkson and Avril Lavigne). I went all out (ha!), for an accountant, using fishnet stockings, blood red lipstick and a good thick layer of black eyeliner and metallic eye shadow. I even had on a rolling stones baby tee. That’s the most creative I’ve ever been, and I still claim that it was my one shot at being less conservative – haha!

I’m excited about my costume for Halloween this year: Rosie the Riveter! There’s been a big emphasis on DIY in blogs (yours is the apple of my eye) and even commercials on TV, why not carry it into Halloween.

Last year me and my husband went as the Bobbitt’s…the famous couple where she cute off her husbands man-hood because he cheated on her. WE were dressed in PJ’s and I had blood all over, hair in curlers and a jar with a vienna sausage and he wasin his PJ’s with blood in the nether region…it was a hit!!!

3 or 4 years ago my husband (then boyfriend) won a huuuuge wolf stuffed animal for me at the State Fair. It was literally human size. Right before we got married I told him he had to get rid of that thing, but he just couldn’t part with it completely so we took out all the stuffing and cut arm and leg holes in it and we were Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf for Halloween that year. When I was a kid I went as the missing child on the milk carton. I painted and wrote all over a giant cardboard milk carton that I made myself. I put two wooden dowels through it so I could wear it on my shoulders and put my face through it. I was so proud but it was an incredibly uncomfortable costume. I had marks on my shoulders for a week.

My favorite costume was the one I had when I was 8. My mom made me a giant crayola box costume out of a refrigerator box and posterboard. My hat was a green crayon and I had four other colors on either side of me. I got to wear green tights and glittery makeup…it was so cool!

My 5 friends and I went as Jem and the Holograms from the classic 80s TV show, complete with neon instruments that we jammed out on every chance we got. We were truly outrageous! The best part of the look was that more men than women recognized who we were!

My weirdest and favorite costume was probably the year I was a tree. I just dressed in brown clothing and wrapped myself in fake ivy vines. Another favorite was when I was a cow. I definately had a rubber utter.. try saying that 5 times fast. :)

One of my hobbies is makeup artistry. My BF and his best friend decided they wanted to recreate the Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake incident that happened during the Super Bowl half-time show that year, so I made them over for a famous couples party. Pleather body suit, airbrushed tan foundation, wigs, fake lashes, it was fabulous. Everyone loved it AND they took first place in the costume contest! Made up for me having to go as Cleopatra without my Anthony, haha.

Growing up we didn’t do Halloween but my husbands mother does a party every year. I’d I have to say that I LOVE my costume this year. Of course I don’t have pictures yet of it though. Just think of Katy Perry’s red jacket outfit in her music video Hot and Cold.

I have two favorite Halloween costumes. One year my friend and I got huge boxes and went as a pair of dice. Years later a group of us went as Dorothy, the Tin Man, and Scarecrow. We couldn’t find a Cowardly Lion, but the response was still fantastic.

When I was about 10 I dressed up as a waitress. Halfway through the night I lost my tray of fake food so then people had no idea what I was. Just some girl with an apron. Sigh.

My favorite Halloween costume was actually not a halloween costume at all. One Christmas when I was about 8 I told my mom that I wanted to be a Christmas tree. So, we took a bunch of brown construction paper (cp) and taped them together around my legs and made the “trunk” then we took green cp and cut it into strips for the “needles.” Finally we took yellow and red and cut them into circles for the “ornaments” and taped them all to my body, arms, and face for a beautiful tree! I still LOVE THAT!
