Burning Question: Co-Closets?
We got to thinking about sharing with your other half this week, especially when it comes to your closet situation. Do you each have a side or do you have completely different closets in the same room? Do you have one of those awesome walk-in dealies or a smaller space with all of your combined clothing jammed in? Or is the man relegated to a totally different room entirely (I feel your pain, that was me until we added our Ikea built-ins to triple our closet space). No matter the arrangement, do tell. Because we can’t all have this baby to call home to…

And speaking of closet arrangements, check out how we organize ours right here (nothing fancy, but it does the trick).

Love your blog! I don’t remember how exactly I got here though… through other websites and blogs…
In our first apartment there were two fairly large closets in the bedroom. It was nice since we were just starting to mesh all of our things together as newlyweds. We moved into another one bedroom apartment last year and we love it! Except it has much less closet space. We share a pretty tiny closet now, and we also bought a chest of drawers from IKEA. We’ve also both gotten rid of a bunch of clothes we didn’t wear anymore.
We have a walk- in closet that I claimed and my husbands clothes are in his upstairs office that has two regular size closets in it. He also has TWO dressers up there with clothes in them. If you ask me he needs to down-size his wardrobe…but of course I’m taking up all of the smallish walk-in our room so I can’t complain too much.
In our old house I used the guest room closet, he used his office closet and I stored all our linens in the master bedroom closet. It was a VERY small old house and those were the ONLY three closets in the entire house.
I’m hoping the next time we move to have a walk-in closet big enough to hold all our clothing.
Ha! May Husband asked if he could move to the guest bedroom closet- our tiny cottage has even smaller closests. :)
Oh closets, the bane of my husband and I’s master bedroom. I went from a huge 14×10 closet at my parents house complete with a Container Store Elfa system, to sharing a small walk-in in our first apt to an even smaller walk in in our first house. Honestly you can barely call it a walk in closet. Hubby has the top bar on the longer side and I have the rest. We are planning on adding about 10″ to the length with a closet/bathroom remodel and getting some sort of built-ins. I would love to do Elfa, but the closest one to Hampton Roads is Tysons!
UGH closet space! Always an issue! We live in a house built in 57′ and the closets are small and few! But our room was originally a den and thankfully has a larger closet. You can’t walk in but it is longer. My husband took down the one rod hanger and added two to utilize the height of the closet. There is a shelf on top of the bottom one where all his pants and shorts are folded. He has the top rod for his clothes, I have the bottom! :) We use the guest room closet for off season stuff – mostly sweaters and sweatshirts!
We are lucky to have two small walk-in closets in the master. Of course mine is a little bigger. I have to say that we ‘organized’ our closets several years ago and that was money well spent. We not only have more room, we keep it cleaned, organized and won’t over fill it because it looks so good!
Our ’60s home came with two fairly generous closets in each bedroom. Unfortunately, the previous owners saw fit to update them with hideous white wood-grain vinyl folding doors (picture two of these numbers that meet in the middle. Ugh.).
As far as division of space goes, we each have our own closet in our bedroom. Except that my husband, who’s worked an office job since before I graduated high school, has a much larger collection of professional attire than I do. Because of that, some of his clothes end up overflowing into my sparsely-filled space.
I love closets. We bought a house that was built in 1948 and two of the three bedrooms have mini walk-ins. The hallway also has two coat closets. So, my husband uses the coat closet in the hallway (adjacent to our bedroom door). Since he wakes up at 4 am for work, it is nice that he is not turning on a light in our room in order to find his work clothes! I use the closet in our room. We also use under-the-bed plastic storage containers for off season clothes, and rarely used items such as paint clothes, snow suits, and maternity clothes.
Wow. That looks like a room-sized closet. Have you ever seen Oprah’s? Or various other celebrity closets? Some of them are like personal stores!
Anyway. My husband and I share a very cramped walk-in closet. The doorway that leads into it (a bit smaller than a regular sized bedroom doorway) is the width of the walking space in our closet. There are clothes and things (well organized) straight ahead, and on both sides when you walk into it. I am very much considering doing something akin to your idea since our walk-in is one of our only means of storage right now.
I worry about this. We move into our first house in 20 days! our current closet is like our third bedroom. my nephew has slept in there in his pack n play (door open of course!) the ONLY thing I don’t like about the new house is that our master closet it *tiny* – not a walk in at all… my boyfriend has FAR more close (about four times as many if not more) so he will be spreading his stuff about the house in other closets. I will take my fair share of 1/2 of the master closet. He doesn’t wear 1/2 of his stuff anyway so I doubt it’ll be an issue — heck, maybe he’ll even down size some more!
I would love to have a closet! Ours is non-functional as it’s somewhat long, but too narrow to hang clothes in (might be 30 inches wide, if that). I mean – what is the point? It’s currently box storage (and we can’t get into it, either). We’ve got a little rack outside of the closet for a few things, but really, I just have to wear clothes that don’t require hanging. Or folding, as our dresser just isn’t enough space – especially for winter clothes.
My boyfriend and I moved into our duplex apartment a year ago in November and have this nice, big walk in closet in our bedroom upstairs with one rod in the back of the closet, one in the front. He put all his clothes in the back and let me use the one in front. However, he hardly is ever upstairs except for when we sleep so now hangs all his clothes on the treadmill in our “office” room. I decided I need to just get some nice huge bookshelves and put his clothes here in the office on the some shelves – probably cover them with curtains like you guys did. I am even going to try to get a room makeover from you guys cos my office is in SERIOUS need of organization and design! Absolutely love your blog!
Closet space? Not sure I know what that is…
My boyfriend and I live in a fairly small one bedroom right in the city of Boston. We knew we’d have to settle for small to be in the city and we definitely got it. We have one small closet in our bedroom. Not only do both of our clothes go in but our dresser is tucked in to it too! With a narrow bedroom to begin with and an old radiator taking up too much space there was no where else for the dresser! We rely on under bed storage for out off season stuff, as well as our luggage (which we actually have to store in the pantry!!) It’s definitely not ideal, but I guess that’s what one must give up for a good location!
Oh, what I wouldn’t give for us to each have our own closet… We currently share a regular too small closet in a very small bedroom and it is overflowing. We’re hoping to move in the near future and that is one thing I will be looking for in a new house.
Now: a nice walk-in closet with lots of storage, even a dresser…and a window.
Then: my clothes and shoes crammed into the tiny 40s bungalow bedroom closet, and his stuff crammed into a hall closet.
Thanks for checking.
Ooh, that’s my dream closet! But I’d need two–one for me and one for G. Right now we share a small walk-in. He has one side and I have one side. Okay, okay, I might have a teensy bit more space than him, but that’s only b/c handbags take up more room than baseball caps! (Or at least that’s what I tell him.)
In Europe there are mostly none of walk ins. I like real closet, clothes collects no dust, and two of use have one small wardrobe, no clutter, just the things we need.
Left side mine (separate door), right his.
For socks and underwear I use this:

No dressers, less is more.
We do buy some expensive brands, but not so often…and good quality lasts long.
We do have one built-in in our hallway for shoes, 8 shelves.
But for clothes, underwear, towels only one closet. i don’t like walk-in soulutions, I can’t get rid of a feeling with the time things get dusty there, for all seasonal stuff.
Most european apartments have only one bedroom, if kids there – kids room too, living room and sometimes office. Enough. More rooms, more clutter.
We share a closet, that had a closet system in it when we bought our condo. It is a shared, but organzied space {with bi-fold downs; not our favorite}. I would love a walk in closet!
I live in a 200+ yr old cottage in England & there is one closet that is 1 foot deep by 2 feet wide. People only owned about 2 changes of clothes back when my house was built. We have had a closet built in an alcove of our master bedroom that is 2 feet deep & 3 feet wide. So for 2 adults we have 5 feet of hanging space which also includes shelves. And it stores our shoes as well. And all of my handbags. And our printer. And my fascinators (we go to a lot of weddings & there is no storage in the house for hats)… also, neither of the closets are walk-ins, that is but a distant dream & will have to wait for the next house!
My husband and I share a closet, though there’s currently no rhyme or reason to the organization. We each have a side and that’s about it. Ours needs help! :/
My husband and I just moved into our new (to us) house. We previously rented a house where he used the master bedroom closet and I used the guest bedroom closet, which was larger. Now our master has his and hers closets that we love. It’s great to have them both in the master but be able to have our own separated spaces.
Like many prior commentees, my fiance and I also just moved into our current house — which is now our 1920 craftsman-style baby. While we love so much about it, one thing that we are suffering through is minimal closet space. We have three bedrooms, one of which is utilized as an office, and they each have one teeny-tiny closet. So, since it’s much more important for my guy to look his best everyday (he’s on the news, I’m a school librarian and am currently living in my summer slouchies), I gave up our bedroom closet to his needs and most of the office closet for his bulky suits and blazers. Most of my stuff is in the guest room, so I lovingly refer to it as my “dressing room”. Additionally, we use under-bed storage for out-of-season items and dressers for more casual necessities.
I’m only dreading the future coming of babies for the closet challenges they pose!!
We live in Southern Illinois in a small 1960′s ranch that we are slooooowly redoing. We used to share closet space until hubby became a police officer, and he’s also on a special response team and changes shifts unpredictably. I am sure you can imagine the gear, the uniforms, the footwear, the “accessories” that all began to pile up. And the closet is only a reach-in, not a luxurious walk-in. Ugh. After years of dealing with my side getting smaller and smaller I threw in the towel. I moved all my stuff to the office closet which shares space back to back with the bedroom closet which is now solely his. And we are all kinds of IKEA outfitted. Something he poo-poo’d until I “moved out” Haha! Now we are both happier and mentally healthier. I don’t have to push combat boots out of the way to get to my pumps now! Whew.
In our first house, we had a HUGE beauiful walk in closet, which my husband and I both shared. Since then however, we have moved into an 80′s ranch which has very small closets. Taking a cue from you guys, we waited a little while to see what worked for us and our family and now my husband’s clothes are in the office closet. It sounds silly but since he gets up a couple hours earlier than I do, he can leave the master and get ready without distrubing me, plus it also gives us both a little more room.
