Hey Connie,

We wish we could help. Unfortunately we're not sure who you're referring to. Hope you can hunt her down though!

I am looking for the name of the woman who wrote a commentary regarding her home each month in the magazine. I beleive she lived in the Maryland area.
Am also interested if she had written any books on her home.
Thank you.

I had that yellow flowered Simmons hide a bed couch!! Gosh, it was so ugly. It was my first couch, a relative gave it to me when she downsized houses. As soon I saved enough money I bought a red overstuffed sofa (very popular in 2001...) for the first real piece of grown up furniture I bought myself.

That does sound beautiful, John - and how incredible that it was such a source of inspiration for your mother. Unfortunately we don't have that cover, but hopefully one of our readers knows someone who does!

Best of luck finding it.

Hi! I live in Richmond too and was just talking to my mom (who is a design diva from way back) and she was telling me of a House Beautiful cover from spring or summer 1955(ish) that is imprinted on her memory and has in some way or another inspired her designs for a half century now. I would love to see that cover, but have not been able to find it. She says it is of an old farmhouse with wide floorboards with a big comfy chair and a fireplace in the foreground and the back door thrown open to a bright woodland garden. Do you perhaps have that cover or do any of your readers? Thanks, and... Looove the site!

Hey Julie,

We actually donated those old issues to the library near our house after we enjoyed them ourselves. We thought other locals would get a kick out of them too. So sorry it's not ours to pass along anymore!

xo,

When looking through this blog about old House Beautiful magazines, I noticed the last cover you showed (with the white lattice) featured the private retreats of several famous people including the home of Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. Many years ago, I was engaged to their son Christopher and spent a lot of time with his family. I wondered if you might consider selling that issue. I would love to have it as a keepsake.

Is THAT what those outfits are called? Flightsuits?? There are so many pictures of my mom wearing those in spumoni colors with me as a baby on her lap. It's good to know they have a name :-)
