Let The Rain Fall Down Freebie Winner!
Thanks so much to all of you for making our first official giveaway as Young House Love such an amazing success. With nearly 2300 entries, it’s clear you all not only love the rain but also these eco- and water-bill-friendly rain barrels from The Rain Barrel Company!

And speaking of being clear, Sherry wanted me to come clean about the fact that the Hilary-Duff-inspired title of this freebie was all my doing. It’s a long story, but basically that song was once a big inside joke with some of my college friends (shout out to Quan and Sarah) so it’s forever engrained in my mind. Which is why I just couldn’t help but break it out when it was so appropriate for this giveaway (and yes, I even snuck in another lyric in my admission statement above – did ya catch it?)

But you’re probably wondering who the lucky lady or gent is who’ll soon be watching the rain fall down into their new rain barrel. Well, we plugged numbers into our trusty random.org and it spat out… Shifra. Congrats! We can’t wait to hear whether you’ll be going for the paintable Californian barrel or one of the planter-topped Cascata models. Either way, thanks in advance for recycling your rainwater with us. In fact, we’re going to be washing our car with some of our barrel water this weekend.
For everyone else, don’t forget you can also learn how to make your own DIY barrel on our How To page. And we’re just a few days away from announcing next week’s giveaway on our usual Monday schedule. So stick around (and yes, that’s a clue).
Psst, have you updated your bookmarks / reader / blogroll / outgoing links / Twitter/ Facebook yet? If you’re still heading our way using old TYH methods, they won’t last for long so don’t forget to make the switch! We’d hate to lose a single one of you freebie-lovin’ folks.

Although the Cascata versions are really nice and I, personally, would love to have one, the rain California-type barrels come deeply discounted when you do them DIY-style! Check Craigslist for a food barrel distributors and they run around $25 a barrel. Then simply follow Sherry and John’s advice and you will have one of your own in no time! Thanks, John and Sherry, for the inspiration. I’m making one of these doozies this weekend!
I’d love to get one of these, especially the Cascata, which looks beautiful! But even in this drought, a gallon of municipal water costs a little more than half a cent, so at $270 I’d have to fill it up more than 800 times just to break even! That’s a lot of rainy days…
Wow! This is amazing!!
Thanks so much Sherry and John, I was just sitting around the other day when it was raining dreaming about a terra cotta cascata :)… and now I’ll have it! You cannot believe how excited I am! Thank you!!!
Congrats Shifra!!! We’re getting rain in Alexandria, VA this afternoon and I hope you get lots once you have your rainbarrel.
Okay Youngsters…this is the second week in a row that my name (Sarah) has appeared in the winning entry and gotten my hopes up. Last week the winner Sarah (the “crazy cat lady”) which I am, but I thought I’d managed not to mention my cat and this week John’s song & friend reference. Do you know how my heart stops when I see my name in print? Yes its a common name but I love it, so next week can you get it right…its Sarah W. after the word “Winner” ;)
Funny you say that, Sarah W. Sherry and I are constantly commenting how your name is one of the most common names on our entries. Sorry for all the false alarms – maybe all of your Sarahs can band together and come up with a bunch of cool nicknames for one another? :)
-John
thought you may appreciate this type of rainwater collection system I came across… how neat & simple?!

No discount code for us non-winners? Grrr. ;)
