Burning Question: Television Takeover?
Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised to hear that Neilsen has recently calculated that there are more television sets in America than humans. So with the average American home now having 2.86 TVs (dare you to get a good signal on that .86% of a television set) we wanted to know where your household stands.
Do TVs outnumber family members in your home? Or does flesh-and-blood still rule over wires-and-plasma ’round your parts? Don’t worry, we won’t judge either way- we’re just curious if our readers reflect these recent Neilsen findings. While we’ve only got one TV set in our house at the moment, we may have to invest in a second one someday to accomodate Burger’s viewing habits…

I am the proud owner of a big, fat, zero television(s?). As a college student, I suppose this is pretty rare, but I find that without TV I waste a lot less time, not to mention that not having the distraction has created incentive (and time!) to develop relationships with real, live people.
Wow, what a concept, right?
I admit, at times there is nothing I want more than to snuggle up to a movie and a cup of cocoa, but I’ve learned to improvise – my laptop plugged into my stereo (for better quality sound) more than suffices for the time being.
I suppose after I get married I will invest in one with my fiance, but I think that we will forgo satellite or cable to spare the expense and to make sure we are making the most of our time together (instead of rotting our brains).
Interesting post!
my husband and i have 0 tvs. he loves to watch sports and i love “what not to wear”, but we find we can get our fix by just looking online and reading articles about sports and fashion/decorating. it gives us a lot more time to hang out and do something more productive. if we’re really feeling the need to veg, we huddle around our laptops for a dvd like we did in college. :)
There are more people than televisions in our house. But we have five children, so in order to have more televisions than people, we would have to have eight of them! Right now, we have two televisions. One in the living room, and one in our oldest daughter’s bedroom.
I never thought of having more tv than people, but sadly we do. With only my husband and I we have the 50 flat screen downstairs, the 30 flat screen in the bedroom and his old college tv in his man room (even my old college tv in a closet!)
Does the garage count? :) We have a large TV in the living room, small one on the wall in the master bedroom and an old one in the garage for when my husband is in a self-inflicted “time-out”. I currently have two housemates, my wonderful hubby and amazing 3 year old son. So technically, we are either even, or (if you don’t count the garage) we still outnumber the TV’s! Most nights my son is not eager to go to sleep and a bunch of my mommy-friends advise on the greatness of a TV in the toddler’s bedroom, but I am dead-set against that idea. My son will not have a TV in his bedroom until he can buy it himself:)
My husband and I have 5 TVs. It’s so sad! 1 in the living room, 1 in our bedroom, 1 in the guest bedroom, 1 in the workout room, and an undermount in the kitchen. We use them ALL!
I guess technically our TVs out number us, but not in actual practice. We have one TV on the main level of our house, which is the only one we actually use. We have my husband’s old TV in our basement that I use for workout videos when I feel motivated. We also have another TV in our basement that I got when I was 11, but it is not set up to watch.
No tv here! Although football season is quickly approaching and I’m starting to get a little nervous about not having direct access to games, it’s soo nice not having a television. I’ve read more books and been more productive than ever…but I may be spending more time at the sports bars this fall/winter as a tradeoff! ;-)
Funny. We are a family of four and have one TV but never watch it. Unless I really need some “me” time while Daddy is at work, I’ll put it on for the kids for less than 30 mins.. and even then, they barely watch it!
