The Dish
Remember when I posted one short week ago about these amazing white ceramic leaf platters that we came across on our window-shopping-spree of Savannah? At $40 the big round one on the bottom right felt like a bit of a splurge, but the next morning when we hit the road I was still thinking about it…

Enter the Target clearance section stage right, where I happened across this adorable little white ceramic leafy dish for a mere 74 cents.

Sure it’s smaller and a bet less palm-ish, but the inspiration is definitely there- and for less than a dollar I was wholeheartedly and unequivocally sold. I actually like the smaller size as it fits perfectly on my little bedroom ottoman and serves as a place for me to drop some of my most-worn jewelry (instead of tucking it away in my egg crate with all of my other baubles).

I think I’m in love. What do you guys think? Is it (as the Target lady in the SNL skits says) a match? And on another note, have any of you stumbled across something that reminds you of a higher-ticket item and snatched it up like a hot cake? Dish the dirt (and yes, the dish pun is intended).

Awesome! You make me want to run out and raid Tar-Jay… and to be honest, I’m loving the $.74 one better!
I LOVE IT! I am all about something that cost under $1 especially if I have been pining over something that cost much more than that. Did you buy more than 1? I would have! I have a tendancy to buy things I don’t need just because they are cheap and I love them. You never know what you might be able to do with more of them….like hanging them on the wall in a cute little arrangement, or as appetizer plates at your next BBQ? a place to rest a candle or as a happy to your best friend for watching your kid so that you could run get a hair cut (I speak from personal experience on that one!)
I am new to your site, and I have to say that I am addicted! I have been reading everyday since I found you! I am actually in the process of redoing my living room/dining room/kitchen since seeing your great transformations. Thanks for the inspiration needed to finally get that fireplace painted! I will send before and after pics when we are done! thanks again for all the great ideas and how-tos! I look forward to reading more!!!
Sherry,
Just like your love of all things ceramic and white, I have a love for all things black (and ceramic-y). That being said, since reading the blog, I have to say, I have opened up more to the thought of white items in my home. Also, since you had such good luck at Target, I thought I would add that the dollar spot (that little section right when you first walk in) often has some great finds for your home; little bookshelf decorating pieces and the like. In the past I scored two ceramic Buddha’s for $0.75 (originally $2.50)! And just last week I picked up a black mini vase perfect for one simple flower on a night stand or on the fireplace. Gosh, I really do love my Target!
White ceramic things are my new addition! You seem to always find the best deals at target. And honestly, I love the $.74 one better. Your sweet find makes me want to rush out to Target after work.
I love it! I’m digging your little find a bit more than the leafy inspirations. I think it’s more versatile than the leaves. Either way, at that price, I’m sure anybody can make it work.
I have this plate and actually use it in the same way! Recently, I scored a black antique fan (similar to the one on your ottoman)at a garage sale for ten dollars that is very Restoration Hardwarey. A sturdy Manzanita branch from Marshalls is another favorite that looks high end on my coffee table but was a steal. I adore your blog!
Not fair! I have the exact same one, but my clearance price was $3.24. It has a home in my guest bath as a candle holder. It’s very ZGallerie-ish.
Virtually everything I buy reminds me of something I saw at a much higher price. It’s my talent; a weird one, but it is. I’m just trying to think of how to make a good business model out of it. :o)
Before I got married, my mom happened across various items from the Lenox china pattern we’d registered for at TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Each piece was $2.99-$5.99, depending on whether it was a dinner plate, salad plate, or mug. Regular retail for our pattern is $25/piece and up. My mom went to multiple locations in my hometown and even another city when she was visiting and bought every piece she could find (ie, around a dozen of each). That allowed us to return some wedding gifts and use the store credit for items on our registry that no one had purchased, and none of our guests were the wiser! (Well, maybe now they will be…)
I also found our Lenox Jubilee Pearl toasting flutes for $8.99 at TJ Maxx, in the box and everything… they’re still $58 online at Macy’s and Lenox.com.
I love the target find! This is totally off subject, but where did you buy/find that vintage looking fan in the pic? I’ve been searching and have found some pricey ones, but I was hoping to spend a little less. Thanks!
Hey Jennifer,
Unfortunately our little fan hails from the now defunct Linens N Things (we actually registered for it and received it as a wedding gift), but definitely keep an eye out for one at places like Bed Bath & Beyond and even Target since I think ours was only around $15-20 (as opposed to the pricey reproduction ones that can run in the $60+ range).
xo,
Sherry
Ah! I have the same white ceramic dish…and got it for $2.50. Not bad, though. I had been eying this chair (http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=891&f=10894) at Crate & Barrel. But I couldn’t pay $359 for one chair! So, I went on the hunt and found the same exact chair for 75 beans…the excitement I felt! I couldn’t help it and bought two for my loft.
Yes, I did that but on a much more expensive scale, although I don’t regret it now even though I choked on the price then. When traveling in Istanbul, I desperately wanted a gorgeous handmade rug I spotted in a swanky store – the design on it was so lovely, but the price tag was over $1k. Eek. And I lived in a small apartment with nowhere to put it. Later that day in a ceramics store, I saw a small but pretty hand-painted plate with nearly the same design and vibrant colors for a much more palatable $175. Still pricey (esp. for a plate!), but it’s one of my favorite souvenirs and is proudly displayed in our living room!
I happened upon a shell dish, similar to the one you guys have in your kitchen, at Marshalls. It was just sitting there when I turned the corner into the kitchen area.
It’s a dead ringer for the big seashell one from Z Gallerie, but it was $10. I grabbed it and ran. I love it :)
I like the one you found better and you can’t beat 74 cents. I hardly every find deals like that at our Target, what a find.
I love it! What a great deal!
Ohhh I am so jealous! The Target’s in my area rarely blow my skirt up and there are 3 of them, no less. They don’t have much to look at as far as clearance items go… BUT you’ve found great piece for your beautiful jewels!
PS: Crate & Barrel usually has cute (and cheap!) ceramic dishes – one of which I use for my most-worn jewelry too! I think it was $1.95…
I actually like the one you got at target better! And for 74 cents, you can’t beat that!
Loving the 74 cent version. Perfect as a night stand jewelry dish. I have a similar one I keep near my kitchen sink for jewelry but I do not recall it being less than a dollar *sigh*!
That is an amazing find! And I love the shell you have your bracelets in. Where did you find it?
Hey Candace,
We got that little faux clam shell in a beach shop in Rehoboth Delaware. Although that might not be nearby, most beach stores have some pretty cool shells (and imitation shells) if you keep an eye out. And it would look just as cute in the bathroom holding a bar of soap or even some natural sea sponges. Hope it helps!

Sherry
I saw the stamp on the book and I said “I know the book! It’s Postsecret!!!” I love PS!
I like the clearance plate so much more than the expensive version! Yay for GREAT sale finds!!
I’ve got this too! Though I bought it months ago, and I think it was around $4. Still not a bad price… I have a frosted glass candle sitting on it. I didn’t want to gunk it up with wax it’s so pretty!
Excellent find to cure the wants for that $40 dish. Very excellent.
We’ve been searching high and low for pillows for our new couch and chairs and the other day while not even looking for them I stumbled upon some clearance pillows in Target (near the vases and vase fillers aisle in the back) and they were just the thing to fill what we envisioned in our minds (embroidered thread, soft colors, capiz button detail). And at $14 each we let out of a sigh of relief from the $40 plus pillows we’d been spying for the past year.
Target has similar fans (go to Target.com and seach “Hunter fans”) and while normally they are $69.99, I just got one on sale last week for $40. Still not the cheapest, but its damn cute.
I would have seriously wrestled you to the ground for that under-a-buck dish…screaming the entire time “mine, mine, mine!” I am soooo jealous.
Best friends wrestle, right?!
XO – Katie
p.s. off to vote :)
But now I know your weaknesses Katie Bower. I would have talked super fast to confuse you and then grabbed the dish and ran.
Thanks for the vote! You rock my socks.

LOVE IT! Since reading your blog I’ve fallen in with your well chosen accents. I recently was in Dilliards picking up a wedding gift for a wedding, and I saw this little white ceramic, and it was on sale for $14! Not super cheap like your less-than-a-dollar find, but so cute! I’ve been so tempted to go back! It was somewhat like this one, only I don’t like this one as much…http://www.jasperjacks.com/galphotos/1254_5.jpg. Anyways, I’m all about finding my favorite things at bargain prices, I feel like I enjoy them that much more!
Hey Sherry!
Do you have a target link for that little plate? I looked but maybe it’s only in stores now that it’s down so cheap!
Thanks so much,
Ashley
PS I’ve been voting every day.. can’t wait to see all of your projects! :)
Hey Ashley,
We actually looked for the link for the plate when we wrote the post but it seems that since the dish is so on sale it’s no longer on target.com. Hopefully you can find one at your local store, though! Ours was on an end cap if that helps (the end of an aisle near the kitchen stuff).
xoxo,
Sherry
I think I like your Target better than ours, which seems to be picked over most of the time. Great find!
wow! I think I love the Target one even more! I’m going to have to keep my eye out for that — loving the petal design.
Oh, and we have that fan, too — I believe we picked it up at Wal-Mart (a VERY rare purchase for me from that store).
Oh my gosh, I am a self-proclaimed Target clearance freak!! I usually hit the end cap clearance sections before I even grab the items/necessities on my list. I can’t tell you how many goodies I’ve found over the years that I covet very much -and brag about how little I paid for them!!
Love, love, love your blog! You guys inspire me!!!
Love the Target dish even more than the ‘original’. I have just recently bought an aluminum table (similar to one at Pottery Barn for $298) and got it on sale at Amazon.com for $47 and free shipping. I’ve since seen the EXACT SAME TABLE advertised for $188, so I feel like it was a great deal. I also picked up a pretty pale blue ceramic garden stool at Costco for $33 that looked just like a pricier one I had seen for $198 earlier in the week. Isn’t it wonderful when you find that perfect piece for a deal? Getting things like that for a great price allows me to spend a little more on things like granite and marble for the kitchen – to go with the Kitchen Aid mixer I scored at a yard sale for $15.
Thank you so much for responding Sherry! I’ll check my Target! :)
I also like the dish and at that price it’s MUCH better than the other ones that you found in Savannah.
Oh, and the other day I was in Anthropologie and they also had the egg crate that you keep your jewelery in. It was $12 and I found it where they sell other kitchen stuff. Love that store!
The price speaks volumes. Yes the $40 one is more unique but you know what? Who cares. The Target one is cute too. xo
I totally love the Target dish better. It looks just like a dahlia, which I love!
ohmygosh, I need to hit up Target tomorrow, I want one!!
OMG…I have the exact same dish from Target and paid $3.24 which I thought was a steal!! However, you have me beat :-)I use mine as a holding spot for loose change and keys on our entryway table.
I actually bought the same dish at Target about a month ago. BUT mine was about two and half bucks…should have held out for the 74-cent bargain! ;-) Oh, and I totally thought of your site and all the white ceramic things when I got it.
Gotta love Target and I always go on the hunt for the clearance items first, especially in the home section. I’ve gotta go to Target tomorrow and I’m praying they have this -it is gorgeous.
Love it even better than the pricier version. Great find!
Regretting NOT buying something can haunt you forever. When I was in high school I found this vintage-looking denim jacket that had sort of a marching band feel (I know it sounds awful) but it had a lot of personality but I didn’t get it and to this day I wish I had.
That little dish is adorable – maybe I’ll check out Target and see if I can find something just as cute as yours.
I kinda like the original one better. I can’t beat the deal you got on it, but I like the uniqueness of the original over the mass produced Target one. On an everyday basis, I limit myself to the more mundane, but on vacation I allow myself to purchase a pricier item that I have fallen in love with. But, it must be LOVE, not just kinda-sorta-like. For instance, we were recently in an antique store on Rt. 60 going towards Williamsburg and I found these lovely shard boxes. They were dark brown wood and the top was made from a shard of an old chinese vase. Delightful! And they were on sale for a mere $10. Love that kind of deal, and they were each unique. No one will have my box.
Love the Post Secret book by Frank Warren! My husband and I love those books!
I voted!! I hope everyone takes 30 seconds and votes each day for Young House Love on the BHG.com site. Sherry & John need to win this!!
I LOVE the little while ceramic dish!! It’s darling. Yay Target!! I used to work @ Pottery Barn…for the discount when we were moving into a new home & needed new furniture & accessories.
I can’t tell you the number of times I saw PB knock-offs at Target — and darn good ones too — for about 1/3 of the price.
Target’s got it goin’ on. Last January, I bought a beautiful capiz shell floor lamp at Target for 29.99…onsale from the original 139.99. SCORE!
But, that’s not what you asked….hmmm, let’s see….well, I had been shopping for large iron or resin urns to place on either side of my front door, for flowers, etc. to dress up my front porch. For months I looked everywhere…but they ranged from hundreds of dollars down to $50 each (Smith & Hawkens department at Target…for one)– still more than I could spend.
Walked into K-mart one day, and in their garden section… were PLASTIC reproductions of large black urns, on clearance for $2 each. Sounds slightly hideous, I know. But I’m so picky…and they are GREAT! You really cannot tell they aren’t resin…or iron or plaster. I bought the only 2 they had left, and had plenty of greenbacks left over to fill em w/ beautiful verbena & hibiscus for the summer months…. :-)
Thanks for the daily inspiration, Sherry & John. Kisses to the Burger Meister <3
Katy
Love the discount dish! Speaking of discounts, I saw some white ceramic animals for $4.99 on the West Elm site’s sale tab. They do have a small colored design on them, but thought I’d let you know since you have a love of all things white & ceramic!
Sweet score! Oh to have a Target in this country.
I also really love your shell dish holding your bracelets (I think?). Is that an au naturel find or do you have a source for it. Totally cute.
Sorry-I should learn to read previous comments BEFORE making my own. I see now where you got the clam shell. Whoops.
Anyone who wants to try their hand at casting their own leaf should check out Garden Gate Magazine http://www.gardengatemagazine.com/extras/53birdbath1.php. These are made of concrete and can be used outside, but I’m not sure why you couldn’t make a smaller one for use inside. I’ve never done it myself, but I have some friends who’ve made some gorgeous leaf castings this way.
My MIL collects frog figurines. Lat year for her birthday I bought her one at Pier 1 that cost…Pier 1 price. For Mother’s Day this year, I found the cutest little frog at Marshall’s that looked just as pricey but was only $2.99. It was perfect, she loved it and we got it at a great price.
Hey Sherry-
You should check out this white Capiz Tray from Urban Outfitters:
http://tinyurl.com/pzae2j
It’s only $14 :D
Ooh I love it. You know me, don’t you?
Shell reference? Check. Inexpensive? Check. White? Check. It’s a veritable decorating trifecta for me!
xo,
Sherry
Oh, I love that dahlia-like plate, so sweet!
