Teresa’s Design Dilemma
Teresa’s living room is primed for a major makeover. Here’s her letter:
Hi Youngsters! I need help with my living room that opens to the kitchen. I’d like both spaces to feel cohesive. I like casual, modern and airy style- basically your living room and den!!! Everything in my living room can go, but I’d like to keep the ceiling fan (they don’t call it Hotlanta for nothing). In the kitchen, we’re keeping the white tile backsplash but the cabinets can be painted (and the current countertops and floor will also be going during the course of our kitchen update so, please disregard them when choosing a color scheme). The tan wall paint in the living room can stay or go. Personally, I like neutrals, blues and greens, but I’m really open to whatever will make the space look light and airy. The room also needs to be multifunctional (we need a dining area, seating area and if humanly possible, an office area with a bit of storage for a few books and files). Please excuse the condition of our home (we’re currently adding more cabinets to the kitchen and have had to move our small office set up and other random furniture into my no longer recognizable living room). Oh and we are trying to avoid the major sticker shock of totally redoing the living room from the rooter to the tooter. I know this one must be quite the challenge… thanks for your creative genius and we look forward to what you come up with! -Teresa

This space is chock full of potential. Here’s the plan:

And now for the mood board breakdown.
1. The big challenge in this small space (which has to serve as a living room, a dining room, and a mini office) is definitely making it feel light and expansive. And one way to instantly make it feel a lot larger is to carry the tan tone on the living room walls into the kitchen for a seamless and spacious effect. We’ll also be bringing in a lot of white to keep things light (which is the color that we’d suggest for Teresa’s kitchen cabinets as well). And we’ll add dimension and layered elegance with some dark wood furnishings, a plush small-scale sectional in tan, and some pops of the soft blue-green tone that Teresa adores.
2. We must admit that squeezing three functions into such a modest room was quite a challenge. But we do love a challenge! We actually thought that the current placement of Teresa’s desk made the most sense in the space, and bringing in this white desk (on clearance!) with a leggy feel will instantly make that mini office area feel visually lighter.
3. Above the desk we’d love to see this great graphic round mirror which is sure to add interest and reflect light to make the space feel even more airy. When hanging the mirror between the door and the curtains, Teresa will first want to hang the new curtains (which will be cheated a bit wider) and then place the mirror at eye level so it appears completely centered (hanging the mirror before the new the curtains will result in an off-centered look).
4. Replacing the bulkier TV stand with this sleek glass fronted model (with free shipping) will keep that entire wall feeling less busy and more polished. And saving up for a flatscreen (you can get ‘em for $250 these days) will really complete the media center transformation.
5. Although our den and our living room (Teresa’s inspiration rooms) look light and bright, we always bring in dark furnishings and even some leather pieces to add dimension and that rich lived in feeling- and this round leather ottoman will work perfectly with our new plan for the seating area ($108 for a coffee table/place to rest your weary feet isn’t bad at all!).
6. We could not get over the price of this amazing arc lamp. We’ll give you a hint… it’s $30. Ok, so we gave you more than a hint but we just can’t believe that for thirty beans, Teresa can place this lamp to the left of her mini sectional and it can arc over and light the entire seating area with style to spare. And the paper lantern is airy and oh so perfect for this space.
7. We thought long and hard about how to squeeze in a dining area, and placing a table right up against the half wall that the living room shares with the kitchen seems like the best way to go. By putting this great (and totally affordable) deep toned table up against the wall (and centered under the opening to the kitch), we’ll maximize the floor plan and make setting the table no sweat (it’ll be so nice to reach through the opening from the kitchen like a pass-through). And adding chic white x-backed chairs will keep it from feeling heavy (can’t beat their $99 price tag!). We also thought Teresa could pick up an extra chair and use it over in her office area to make things feel even more cohesive and balanced in a flash.
8. And speaking of the office area, we’d love to see this clean glass lamp on the desk to provide more lighting and ambiance for under $40 (that’s the best price we’ve ever seen for a glass based lamp!).
9. Hanging two sets of these sleek grommeted white curtains in the living room (one panel on each side of each window) and mounting them high and super wide (at least 18″ wide on each side) will make both windows feel twice as big, let in maximum light, and visually expand the entire space. It’ll look like a totally new room once she gets those babies hung up- and that’s a promise.
10. We love this print’s serene blue and green tones that will really complement our soft neutral palette. We’d love to see this geometric print hung on the wall (in a thin wood frame with a big white mat) behind our mini sectional for instant atmosphere.
11. Here’s the gorgeous rug that will instantly ground the mini sectional and define the seating area. It’s a soft blue-green shag 3 x 5′ rug which will add inviting and cozy texture and really keep things light and lovely.
12. We searched high and low for something to sit on in the living area that would still leave room for an office and a dining room while accommodating more than one person. This amazing small scale sectional (it’s just 53″ x 37″) should slip right into the corner and comfortably seat two or three people while maximizing the rest of the room and allowing for a table to be placed near the kitchen. We love that it’s on clearance ($700 off!) and of course that Teresa can pick her own upholstery (we’d recommend twill in khaki, chenille in tan, microfiber in camel, or velvet in honey). Slipping the plush shag rug under the front legs of the sectional and placing the round leather ottoman on top of the rug to the right of the chase will finish off the entire room in high style. And adding soft blue-green accents like pillows, a table runner and even a round tray on the ottoman will definitely be the icing on the cake.
So there you have it. A light and airy living room full of fresh and inviting style. We can’t wait to see what you guys think- especially you Teresa!
Update: We sadly can no longer find the time to take on client commissioned mood boards (we now whip up general inspiration boards instead) but if we ever reinstate them we’ll make a big announcement!

The first thing I noticed was the front door–it’s awesome. Play it up!
Great mood board! This is totally unrelated, but I saw in your “tweet nothings” that someone was needing some help with removing a popcorn ceiling. I have some friends that recently did theirs, and they simply took a squirt bottle to wet the entire ceiling down and the popcorn portion scraped right off, leaving a smooth drywall ceiling in its place. They covered their floor with a plastic tarp and rolled the mess right up afterwards. Hope Scarpie has the same luck! :)
Sweet!
My husband and I started a herb & vegetable garden a few weeks back (you can see it on my blog) but we decided to start from scatch! We used seeds and not plants. They are growing fast! check out my update tomorrow!
Take care,
Fe
Ohhhhhhhhhh………..love this moodboard. I have a question. I ask this because I plan on showing this cool white desk to my friend (it’s gorgeous and right up her alley). BUT…..she will ask what she should use for her printer and file storage. Right now she is using a laminate really low unit on wheels for her printer (the wheels are never used) and her current desk has 2 drawers on one side that hold files (in the larger drawer) and the small drawer holds stapler, scissors and stuff that isn’t “at home” in her glass frosted pencil cup. What would you suggest? Her place is similarly colored to what this one would be. THANKS!!
Hey Jill,
Good question! We always like a little ottoman or even a wheely unit like the one you describe for additional office stuff). For example, in our own office (which happens to have a white desk) we have a little brown ottoman that we use to store paperwork and we actually keep our printer right on top. The whole ottoman just slips right under our desk so that’s super convenient but in the case of this desk (which is a little narrower) something like this would look clean and streamlined next to the desk or tucked in a nearby corner with the printer on top and some storage inside). And as for storing scissors and the stapler and all that stuff, a little box or drawer or desktop system of some kind is definitely the way to go. And we love everything from an old vase to an old drinking glass for holding pens and other small supplies (a frosted pencil cup sounds lovely). Hope it helps!

Sherry
This is going to be great. I also love the front door. And, while I also love the wall color in the kitchen, I think you are right about bringing the khaki all the way through.
VERY cool………….thanks for the info. I will definately pass this on!
Sherry,
Just wondering if she should do something to her ceiling fan? Maybe paint the fan panels white?
I have to admit, I’m asking for selfish reasons. I have one in my bedroom that I need to keep b/c of the AZ heat but I don’t like it and don’t want to replace it w/ a fancier one. Would painting a glossy white make it less obvious and blend in w/ a white ceiling?
Thank you!
Krissy
Hey Krissy,
We’re definitely no strangers to painting a ceiling fan (we actually painted the one in our den white to help it blend in with our ceiling a feel less overwhelming in the room). It’s really a toss up as to whether Teresa needs to take a paint brush to hers. On one hand, the dark wood is a current tone and it matches the table and some other wood elements that we’ll be bringing in. But on the other hand, painting the blades white will visually lift the fan and make it feel less heavy in the modestly sized room. Hope it helps with your little fan dilemma. If you don’t like your fan blades I would definitely recommend painting them before springing for a whole new fan! And you can’t go wrong with glossy white paint.

Sherry
I love all the suggestions. And I too was struck by the front door (not literally, ouch). I have never seen such a cool door.
That kitchen is coming along nicely too. Fun!
Thanks for all the popcorn ceiling tips! I can’t wait to try them out! I’ll let you know what we end up doing (and take pics naturally)!
LOVE THIS MOOD BOARD!! The lamps from Walmart are awesome!
I agree with the first commenter…LOVE the character of the front door!
Love the mood board and the bargains.
You can’t tell from the pictures but would there be enough room in the kitchen to make the new cabinet a bar with barstools? Just a thought.
I recognize those Ikea curtains from another of your moodboards with a similar palette (I think it was a basement re-do). Consider keeping them, in my humble opinion.
Hey Sandra,
We definitely love the existing Ikea curtains! The only thing was that in her letter Teresa mentioned that her husband hated the curtains (he thought they looked like they belonged to the Partridge Family) so we dug up some more streamlined replacements (aka: some man friendly grommited versions). Hope it helps!

Sherry
What a shame! I’ve had them bookmarked since I saw that first moodboard.
If you want to recycle them, Teresa, feel free to send them my way! :P

(I have no affiliation, but I have followed their houseblog — http://www.erwinhouse.com/ — when they were rebuilding their house a few years ago.)
Hi Sherry,
LOVE the mood board you guys created — I’m actually in the process of re-doing my living room/dining room/kitchen area in a house we just bought and I am obsessed with beachy, airy colors like the ones you chose for Theresa! :)
Would you be able to give me the names of the colors? Are they Benjamin Moore colors?? ( which would be fab if they are since I have a paint store down the road that carries BM)
Thanks so much!
Hey Lindsay,
Teresa already has the wall color on hand so we didn’t supply her with the soft tan tone but for something comparable check out Benjamin Moore’s Baja Dunes with white trim (BM Decorators White). Hope it helps!

Sherry
Wow! I’m really impressed at what you’ve suggested for this space. You’ve managed to meet Teresa’s needs without making the space too cramped. I totally agree with using the same paint color in both rooms – it will give it a more cohesive look. I can’t wait to see the after pictures!
@Eric:
Aren’t those doors at crestview.com awesome? We’re having one of theirs created for our 1960′s ranch home here in the Texas Hill Country. And since they’re from Austin, we can say we shopped locally. :)
Thanks Sherry!
You guys are great and I love coming to your blog every day!! So inspirational!

Nice look overall and a really cute space to start with. Just one piece to pick on: That arc lamp looks good on the page, but it is 94″ tall. The ceilings look like no more than 8 feet, so how is the lamp going to work in this room? It might barely fit, but it will look out of proportion. And can such a large lamp be sturdy with a thin slice of metal as its base?
Hey Lorraine,
Good question! If it assembles like most floor lamps, there are 18″ sections of the base that can be removed to adjust the height (the cord will get a bit longer than usual, but it can be tucked behind the sectional so no one is the wiser. We’re also pretty confident about the lamp’s quality since there are a number of great reviews (it has 4.25 out of 5 stars after 25 people have reviewed it), and it should be even more sturdy with over a foot of height removed when it’s assembled to fit the scale of the room. Hope it helps!

I have been looking EVERYWHERE for a lamp like that that I can fill with things… seashells, river stones, christmas ornaments, etc… Thanks so much for suggesting it! Wal-Mart here I come!
p.s. I voted today (and everyday)… did all of you? Let’s get the Youngsters their 5 grand! Imagine all the creative ideas they will come up with for that money that will continue to inspire us!
p.p.s. I just found the link for a lamp just like this one from pottery barn for $200! The WalMart one is only $40! What a steal! Click this link

to see some great ideas of how they use the lamp and what sort of things they fill it with… Love finding Cheap WalMart versions for fancy Pottery Barn items!
I really like that print.
FYI – I noticed the lamp in our Walmart earlier this week. They were in the clearance section for $20.
Love the mood board. Very nice, though I have a suggestion for the kitchen. You might change the light fixture over the window to point down instead of up. It’ll look more intentional and provide better lighting. :)
Love the desk — here’s another version (but a little cheaper). Don’t know if it is the same size. http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Dover-White-Computer-Desk/3312254/product.html?sec_iid=33969
Thanks Sherry! I’ll try it!
What is that purple (or is it brown?) piece – a chaise or chair with ottoman? Well whatever, I’m crazy about it!
Hi Sherry (& John),
Thanks for your hard work! My hubby and I love what you put together and already have started the shopping. OMG, must let you know that the desk is fabulous. We are excited to put everything together and post the fabu results. Will keep in touch!
- Teresa (and Harrison)
Hey Teresa & Harrison,
We’re so glad you’re excited about your makeover and of course we can’t wait for those after pictures! Happy shopping…

Sherry (& John)
There’s a very similar desk for $60 less here: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Dover-White-Computer-Desk/3312254/product.html
Hey guys, I actually just bought both the arc lamp AND the glass lamp from Walmart last week. Still waiting on site-to-store delivery of the glass lamp, but the arc lamp was delivered to our house about 2 days after we ordered it. It works perfectly in our room, but it is huge. There are 3 segments to the arc and they’re already threaded onto the cord and base…the only assembly required is to fit the segments together and tighten the included screw-like thingys. I don’t see how any of the segments could be removed without sawing through them. But, the arc arm is fairly flimsy and I think if you needed to, you could somehow add weight to the shade end to make it bow more. Ours is behind our sectional sofa (Ikea Ektorp) against a wall, so the flimsiness of the arm isn’t an issue. Not bad for $30!
Hey JC,
So glad to hear the arc lamp works perfectly in your room!. And the idea of making it bow more to fit into Teresa’s space is a great idea! You’re a DIY problem solver after our own hearts. Should Teresa have a problem with the size of the lamp in the end, here’s another arc lamp option that we found that’s a bit smaller (but a lot more expensive), which is why we’re all for the DIY project and the $30 lamp! Can’t wait to see how it all turns out…
xoxo,
Sherry
