Paint Switch
Some of you e-mailed us recently noting that things were a bit different in the Home Depot paint department lately. And apparently some of our favorite Glidden paint colors (like Sand White in our living room and Wishes in our den) were nowhere to be found. We figured Glidden was subtly updating their colors…. no biggie. But when we popped in this weekend we saw their extremely not minor overhaul with our own eyes.

The big difference: Glidden has “refined” their palette to only the most “classic and contemporary colors with timeless appeal.” Translation – they reduced their line from almost 900 colors to just over 250 (by our count, at least). Casting off nearly 650 choices seems drastic, but one could argue it makes the paint selection process a lot less overwhelming. But what’s up with ditching some of our favorite colors? Well, we also heard from the paint specialist that they changed some of the names, so maybe our favorites are still around after all… just going by a different alias.

We do like that by limiting their colors, Glidden is able to provide more info about each option for a customized experience with every color they offer. For instance, now each paint swatch features an inspiration photo and a coordinating color guide on the back. Very handy indeed.

And now you can even grab a pre-mixed 2 oz. tester bottle right at the paint chip display. One of the coolest things is that each bottle has a built-in brush. Genius.

All-in-all, we thought the whole Glidden revamp was pretty cool if not extremely unexpected. Talk about a major makeover. The only drawback was that we couldn’t find the swatch we’d gone to Home Depot for (we’re hunting for a color to coordinate with Wishes, secret project to come…) but Wishes didn’t make the cut- unless it’s now going by a different moniker. But the good news is that Home Depot still has every single one of the old colors in their system, so you can still get the booted colors mixed while you wait, you just won’t have the benefit of taking home the swatch first.
Have any of you guys spotted this paint switcheroo in your neck of the woods? What’s your take on the new Glidden? And while you’re at it, what’s your favorite paint brand in general? We’ve always loved the range of colors by Glidden but the quality of Benjamin Moore and Behr- and we actually like some of Valspar’s colors as well as Freshaire’s no VOC line. But we’d love to hear your preference when it comes to paint.

I have painted every room in my house – some several times. I love Porter Paints – the colors are yummy. I especially love their trim paint Advantage 900 – it is the best paint I have ever used and I have been painting for many years. Love your blog – it is so much fun for this forty something lady to watch your success!!
The new Glidden color centers will be set in every Home Depot by June 30th. The center consists of the most popluar 282 colors collaborated from Glidden and Home Depot data as well as opinion forums with customers. Not only are the displays changing, the paint in the can has been reformulated and upgraded. Marshall Labs – the independent lab that Home Depot utilizes to monitor the quality of the products inside their stores – rated the new Glidden product “excellent” – the highest rating – in every category (Hide, Color retention, Splatter, Flow & Leveling, etc…) for every sheen. This upgrade and “excellent” rating puts the Glidden product on the same rating field as the Behr line in Home Depot and above some of the most popular Sherwin Williams and Valspar lines. The price for the upgraded product did not go up and in some cases went down. If you are looking for a color that is not on the new color center – Home Depot implemented a 8oz tester program for Glidden Paints, Ralph Lauren Paints and Behr Paints. As long as you have the color name, you can have it formulated into the 8oz tester. This tester program is separate from the ready mix testers that are located on the new Glidden Color Center. Just tell the Home Depot associate you need that color in a 8oz tester (all the stores should be set with this tester program by June 30th as well). If you have not used Glidden or have not used Glidden since this switch – give it a try. I have used many many different paints and do see a big improvement in the paint while not emptying my wallet to spruce up a room!
FYI – Glidden is the manufacturer for not only the Glidden Line in Home Depot but also for the FreshAire Line and the hand picked manufacturer of the Ralph Lauren Line (picked by Mr. Ralph Lauren). Lastly, Ralph Lauren Paints just received the highest ratings for a paint line by JD Powers too.
Good to know CC. You’re a wealth of information!

Hello,
I have just tried the New Glidden Paint offered in Home Depot and I have to say it was GREAT PAINT. I just loved it. It went on very nice and easy and covered in one coat for me. I did use brush and roller in the bedrooms but then we sprayed in the game room and both covered in one coat and spraying worked very well with no clogs in my tip. I am very happy with the new paint and I will be using it a lot more now. The biggest thing I loved was it only cost about $20 a Gallon
I’m not sure why all the people here that love Behr Paint are talking about. I used it 3 times now and I can’t stand it. I gave it a chance thinking it might have been the color I picked, but I went back and my wife picked 2 more colors and one Glidden color. We bought more Behr Paint and it had runs and did not cover for me at all. I will not ever use it again. We still have more painting to do and I have used Glidden in the past with no problems so I guess we will try the new Glidden Paint. I should have just used what I was using too but my wife said to use this Behr. Never again.
I tried the new Glidden paint in eggshell base and Benjamin Moore Lacey Pearl color. It’s very nice paint indeed.
-The sheen level is a little higher than I’m used to “(20-30)@ 85″. So visually it’s closer to a satin sheen compared to other paints. (Albeit my original walls had a primed satin sheen before painting. YMMV)
-Hide was very good (as with all paints, you still need 2 coats for a consistent finish/better durability). The color/cut-ins blended real nicely once the second coat was put on. It goes on light and dries darker, so be careful and note where you’ve already cut in.
-flow and release was excellent (it’s easy to maintain a wet edge during cutting and rolling). With my Wooster Alpha brush, my cuts glided nice and easy. It’s not honey thick like Behr, but thinner like smoothie. Make sure to use a quality nap roller.
(I like to use the Benjamin Moore 5/16″ Microfiber or Purdy 3/8″ White Dove rollers).
-level was very good, just be careful not to lay too much paint down. All paints will show slight brush marks, just roll close to your cut to minimize it.
-Cleanup was also good
(provided any tools were promptly cleaned and not allowed to sit).
All in all nice paint. Some other surprising good box store interior paints (under $20.00/gallon) are:
1.) Olympic Premium Zero VOC FLAT sold at Lowes, and made by PPG.
2.) Conco “Pure” Zero VOC Flat and Satin (Satin finish is actually closer to eggshell) sold at Menards and manufactured by Sherwin Williams.
Happy Painting!
Home Depot has the Glidden upgrade in Raleigh NC too… love your site!
I couldn’t find Sand White by Glidden..Went to the local Home depot, Glidden / Behr did up date colors. Glidden and Behr closely tied. I have used C2 for along time but is expensive.. $40 a gallon crazy in these economic times… Behr/Glidden I am with u!
They should be able to look up the formula in the computer for you even though they did an update! If not Glidden still makes Water Chestnut which is pretty similar. Hope it helps!

If you’re like me and love designer Sarah Richardson’s work (Design Inc., Sarah’s House), you should know that she loves Glidden paint! Here’s the link to an article that she wrote about her list of her favorite paint colors — and they’re Glidden (ICI) Paints
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/real-estate/article797220.ece
Thanks for the link! Off to check it out…

Oh, yeah, I was pretty excited when I found Sarah Richardson’s list of her favorite paint colors, so I HAD to share them! Sarah says that they are her “Signature Colors” and you can’t go wrong with them. Home Depot can look up the name in the computer, but if you want to actually see the color, then you’ll need to ask the Paint clerk at the store if you can look at Glidden’s old “Master” Fan Deck and the colors are all there!
Debra
Yeah she’s the best. And the funny thing is that she mentions Eloquent Ivory as a great warm cream- and that’s actually the new name for Wishes (which we highly recommend and use all the time). Thanks again for the tip and the link!

Hey guys, I love your blog, it has become something I check everyday now – and I was waiting for some painting posts! We’re looking to re-paint all the rooms and I wondered if you have done any posts on which colours go with certain wood finishes.. I never know which colour to pick to make the furniture look “intentional”, if you know what I mean? Like we have some cherry finish cabinet doors in our kitchen, and every colour I hold up against it seems to clash..
Hey Harinee,
Soft sage and celery green tones look really lovely with cherry wood, and we also love how caramel, wheat, and rich golden tans look with classic cherry wood. Hope it helps!

Ya’ll are the perfect couple. Perfect Family!!
Just a quick question here… my parlour sectional is coffee colour, my coffee tbl and wall unit are dark woods. my Q is, I am thinking of painting my parlour glidden wishes/Eloquent ivory- as of now I have drop cloth curtains… they work great, but I am tired of them now. was thinking of dying them, dark? .. should my curtains match my sectional? or my wall colour? also I would love to paint my coffee table black? Ya’ll have the best taste.. pls advise me ? thanks.
gina in Atlanta.
Hey Gina,
Your curtains would look awesome all bold and dark! We say go for it. You can always go with a rich chocolate or even an eggplant or a deep teal. Since your walls and furniture are all neutral, you can have a ton of fun and freedom with the curtains and they’ll always go- especially if you work some of the same color in with accessories. Good luck!
