A Reader Redesign Goes Glossy!
When we featured Lindsay’s kitchen makeover as a Reader Redesign back in October, we never could have guessed that the people at Kitchen Makeovers (an awesome Better Homes & Garden’s special interest publication) would contact us for Lindsay’s info. Yup, they saw her before and after pics on our blog and wanted to feature her kitchen! Needless to say we were over the moon with excitement, and of course Lindsay (who just welcomed a little baby a few weeks ago) was delighted to hear about her kitchen’s impending fame.
Fast forward a few months and here’s her gorgeous and budget-friendly kitchen makeover in their Spring 2009 issue, in a column that they call Do It For Less. And do it for less Lindsay did. She only spent a mere $50 on primer & paint and her refreshed cabinets look like a million bucks.
Of course you can click the kitch above to enlarge it (and read every dirty detail) and even pick up an issue of your own for the full effect (it’s packed with lots of other yummy eye candy as well). Congratulations Lindsay- on both the gorgeous kitchen and the new bambino!

I was wondering if there is a problem with the bhg website. I have voted now three dys in a row and the number of votes you have hasn’t changed. Is anyone else having that problem or is it just me? Thisyounghouse has 8,648 votes and Makingitlovely has 9,499. Why hasn’t it changed?

Good eye! They’re actually working on it as we speak. Every vote is being counted, it’s just not showing on the site for some reason- so whatever you do don’t stop voting… we need all the help we can get! Hello Sherry & John!
I first found you guys in Do it Yourself magazine when I was searching for design ideas for my kitchen, and immediately fell in love with your young house! I followed your guys to this website and I have to tell you I enjoy reading your posts everyday. I read Lindsay’s story in the Kitchem Makeover magazine months ago as well and guess what? we are finally ready to tackle our kitchen remodel project in the coming week!
I am wondering how do you like side-by-side fridge vs. a buttom-freezer one? I’ve heard ppl saying the ice maker of a side-by-side could be very noisy and the water doesnt taste good….we are working on a budget for sure but we do want to have all stainless steel appliances in the new kitchen…is there a particular fridge you would recommend?
BTW, we are a young married couple with a small dog (a 5 month old cockapoo) so as you can imagine I can much relate to your story :)

We really like our side by side fridge but I can see how it’s a subjective thing. Some people love the bottom freezer version but we really enjoy ours (from Lowe’s by Frigidaire) because the price was right and we actually like the door ice-maker/water dispenser. As for what we’d recommend, we’ve had a great experience with Frigidaire (you can’t beat the price for stainless, and our microwave, fridge, stove and dishwasher are all Frigidaire and have been great for the last year+). To chime in on Renee’s question, we love our side by side fridge too. It works great, the ice maker isn’t loud at all, and the water tastes great! Ive heard from friends that the only reason they don’t like their bottom freezer is because everything has to be stacked on top of each other. They have to dig to find what they want.

Do you know what color blue she used in her kitchen? We just moved into our first home and have white cabinets. The previous owners left a dark blue tiling on the backsplash. Do you have any suggestions for what color to paint the walls? (We’re doing neutral walls in the ajoining rooms.)

Being featured on your website is like being on Oprah. So cool for Lindsay and her beautiful kitchen.
To chime in on the fridge thing. I have a Kitchen Aid side by side and the only problem is that if you want to put something very wide in the freezer, it won’t fit. Since I like to cook ahead I have to be careful about the size of the casseroles I do to make sure they fit in the freezer section. Personally, I think I would love a bottom freezer fridge but that may just be because I don’t have one (smile).
A good ol fashion kitchen redo. Love it! Even though her appliances didn’t all match, I think they worked well with her redo.

I notice from Lindsay’s comments in the original post that the colour used is Behr Viking. They used Newport Blue in the livingroom and wanted a lighter, complimentary colour.

We got a Kenmore stainless fridge with the freezer on the bottom for exactly the reason Carol mentions: wide things don’t fit in a side-by-side freezer. We love ours (it did take a couple weeks before our kids stopped pulling it open every time they walked by just because they could reach it!), and with the sliding divided baskets in ours, it’s easier to keep things organized. And our kids can get their own ice, but there’s no dispenser for them to spill water and ice all over the floor.

there’s nothin’ a fresh coat of paint can’t fix! a dash of new hardware certainly helps too. how cool to see this project in print!
The kitchen looks awesome! I think that’s our kitchen you mentioned was going to be in the fall/winter issue. We’re so excited, and can’t wait for it to come out!
