Fab Freebie: Taste Test

We may be toilet-installation and cabinet-painting experts, but when it comes to cooking we can use all the help we can get. Which is why we were psyched when our latest giveaway sponsor, America’s Test Kitchen, offered to send their newest cookbook our way in addition to doling out some great prizes for you guys (yes, prizes with an “s”). And when our complimentary preview copy of “Cooking For Two” arrived last week, we knew we were in for a good meal (sorry Burger, it’s not Cooking for Three).
I’m Young House Love’s resident (wannabe) chef, so perusing the book for a beginner-friendly recipe was the first thing I did. I loved that every recipe was already portioned for just two people (sweet, no math), but even better was all the background info surrounding each recipe. Hearing about how they arrived at the right ingredients, perfect temperatures and ideal prep techniques was extremely educational for a novice like me (so that’s how you properly shred basil). It even gave me the confidence to take on their Crunchy Baked Pork Chops with Aoili dipping sauce (page 79) on Saturday… although you’ll have to excuse the frozen veggies on the side, I was busy making my own breadcrumbs.
And a handful of you will get to try it for yourselves! Yep, America’s Test Kitchen is giving away a hot-off-the-presses hardcover copy of “Cooking for Two” to FIVE randomly selected readers. I could probably eat banana cream and pumpkin pie for a long time before getting tired of either of them.
As for real meals, I like making and eating turkey! Or having an good BBQ in the backyard with almost any kind of tasty meat (fish, red meat, white meat, whatever!).

My all-time favorite meal is homemade macaroni and cheese. With buttered breadcrumbs on top. I love breadcrumbs! I want this cookbook; the breadcrumbs look divine.

My favorite go-to meal is my white mac and cheese.
White cheese (fontina or farmers cheese works, depending on your budget, Mozzerella, parmi, cream, milk and pasta – simple and yummy! If I’m feeling bad about the carbs and cheese, I’ll throw in some broccoli and chicken and viola!
I WANT A TASTE! My last meal would have to be shrimp of some variety with a side of french fries. Yum!

I want a taste – I am total no-can-do in the kitchen. As much as I can follow the protocols at work and modify them to my advantage I have tried all my tricks and unfortunately nothing is as good as my husbands food. He can make a masterpiece out of scraps. Unbelievable how easy he can create a dish that I would never thought of. Well thank goodness that at least one of us knows how to cook cause otherwise our budget would go to dining.

I want a taste!! Yummy! My go-to last meal?? Probably Filet wrapped in bacon with TONS of mushrooms to go on top. and some goat cheese (or bleu, BOTH?) my mom’s hash brown potato casserole, steamed asparagus, and for dessert? Gotta go with mom again on this one and say her chocolate lava cake with creme fraiche and raspberry sauce. Great, now I’m starving. Hope I win a copy of the book so I can get to cooking!!

Homemade Mac & Cheese!
I WANT A TASTE! I make the BEST chicken piccata. Its delicious, and even better as leftovers. Don’t know how it’d hold up on a desert island though.

My all-time favorite meal is fairly simple: it’s a pork burrito smothered with chili verde and cheese. It’s got everything you need with the ooey gooey cheese, the heat from the chilis and fabulously favored shredded pork. Comfort food at it’s best!

I absolutely love pizza and would eat it every day of the week. The funny thing about my cooking is that I’m not bad, but I can make a perfect medium rare prime rib steak but I never fail to burn my grilled cheese. Where’s the logic in that?!

Humm, I like so many foods it is hard to pick a favorite, but I think I would have to go with a perfectly cooked steak (almost any kind will do). With some sort of chocolate/peanutbutter pie type desert. Yumm.

I don’t know if I have a favorite, per say……but I love Heroes (local sports bar) hamburgers. Oh so yummy. I also love couscous w/apricots and cinnamon. The best breakfast evera…..It only takes 10 from start to finish to make. Yum

“I WANT A TASTE!” I love making cheesy chicken casserole. It’s one of those dishes that you can whip up at the end of a long day and in 45 minutes wallah you’ve got dinner & leftovers for the next day! I would love a Dinner for 2 cookbook! A lot of times, the leftovers go to waste and I hate it!
