What a great photo of the color-ordered books. I love, love, love my bookshelves, and your post inspired one of my own:

One wall of our house has 9 large square(ish) shelves on top of a cabinet. Since our house is kind of small, it holds a lot! That tell the most about me though, I think probably the following things tell the most about me and/or are the most unique.

1. an old brownie camera - I do photography, and I love the look of vintage cameras and gadgets in general.

2. tons of mine and my husband's books arranged by color (loosely)

3. Assortment of family photos and snapshots strewn around throughout.

4. Several wooden boxes (cigar boxes mostly) and one cedar box that my husbands' great uncle made us when we got married. They hold all sorts of things though - letters, photos, memorbilia, and such (and a couple for purely "junk" haha).

5. Assortment of pottery, glass, and farm related items that my husband and I have been given and/or gotten over the years. I love having things out that mean something to me and are pretty to boot.

I really like this post though! Maybe I'm just nosy ;) but I've always really loved looking at people's shelves. People's houses really do tell a story a lot of times!

What a great topic - I love reading everyone's responses!

We're still one bookcase short in our living room, and I'm still adamantly editting the one we've got, but between that, and the shelves on our floor lamps, we've got:

- The silver door knocker that my granny gave us when we bought our house, with our last name engraved (our door has a huge glass panel, so we can't use it otherwise right now).
- Pictures - my parents when they got "married" at a dance in high school; his parents' wedding picture; and awesome shot of my siblings and our cousin the night my other cousins have us "makeovers" c. 1994 (such a classic!)
- Our wedding albums and photobooth guest book
- Our favorite hardcover books - fashion for me; graphic design and comic books for him
- Lots of white accents to brighten up the back shelves - new yellow/white graphic print candle, oversized laquered candle holders, a blanket whose texture looks more welcoming than it feels, and my first/hopefully only forray into faux flowers b/c I need peonies and WI winters refuse to oblige

How fun to reflect!

Oooh I love looking in at other people's bookshelves. I have the 4x4 Expedit from Ikea and take great pride in arranging and rearranging every few month.

Like some other folks, I have the hardbound Harry Potter and Twilight series. I also have a nice and varied collection of books signed by their authors, Candace Bushnell, Hillary Clinton, Heather Armstrong and my once celebrity obsession, Clay Aiken. ;)

I have magazine files that hold my Real Simple, Domino and MacLife magazine collections and some storage boxes from Ikea that hide miscellaneous...crap. Ha.

I have our wedding album and high school year books, some how to books (Nikon D70, Wine for Dummies, Dachshunds for Dummies) and finally a beautiful collection of books by Anita Shreve, Joan Didion, Alice Sebold, Audrey Niffeneger and Jackie Kennedy Onassis biographies. Whew!

Here are some pictures. http://tinyurl.com/ceglj5

Love love love your site. I visit everyday.

The shelf above my desk has framed photos of my husband and 3 daughters and the following books: The Daring Book for Girls; Stitched in Time by Alicia Paulson; Rosie O'Donnell's Crafty-U; Amanda Soule's The Creative Family. That shelf reminds me to take a break from work and to make family memories through creativity.

You can see my shelf here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hambox/2703193238/

This shelf ably reflects my interest in the pretty, weird, and funny. In the background, in a vintage pivot frame painted white, is a print by one of my favorite crafters and photographers, Rachel from Buttons McGee. Bric-a-brac includes an ostrich egg; a stone vase bought at the Ventura County Fair (best fair in the world!); a vintage photo of stranger, my silver baby rattle (complete with teeth marks); real butterfly wings; and, YES, a pitcher with Nixon's face on it.

My bookshelves are overloaded with 50 years of collected books.

I also love blue transferware, baskets and an oil lamp that my father read by as a child.

I need to cull the books and find a better way to show off some of my favorite things.
