Burning Question: Got It Made?
Lately we’ve been questioned to no end on this subject (inquiring minds want to know!). And we’ve even seen chatter about it in the ol’ blogowebisphere. So we figured it was worth tossing the question out to you guys: is a made bed a morning must in your house? Or is it about as common as a blue moon- or a finished to-do list?

If your bed is accustomed to tightly tucked sheets and perfectly placed pillows, who in your household is usually responsible for keeping said bed in check? Or if you prefer the more relaxed approach, is it because you enjoy the efficiency of crawling into an already unmade bed each night or because, well, maybe there’s a certain chihuahua still sleeping in it?
No judgements here, so don’t be shy. Tell us what goes on in your bedroom… er, um, not like that…

Cute pic of the Burger-meister! As much as I would LOVE to have a made bed every morning, it usually doesn’t get done until I get home in the afternoon. I know it only takes a few minutes, but I’m always in such a rush (the earlier I get to work, the earlier I head home). And yes, I have the pooch-in-the-bed obstacle working against me, too. :-)
I live with my fiance and our 100 lb. bulldog. Our bed is never made in the morning. This only happens when we have guests or once a week when I change the sheets. Other than that, its a huge pile of blankets with (and you are correct) the dog in the middle of it all, sleeping the day away.
haha… a made bed is fairly rare in our bedroom. I prefer them to be made, but the reality is that neither of us are morning people and are lucky to get out of the door in time in the morning :-P When I have time, I’ll pull the down comforter up and “half” make it.
we never, ever make our bed. our bedroom door is always closed, in hopes of keeping out our 100lb “bed-hog” yellow lab, so i never really worry about it. plus, i hate messing up something that looks tidy. so there is something so much more appealing about getting into an unmade bed.
I make my bed as soon as I get up (or as soon as hubby is out of it…whichever comes first). I feel so fresh and clean when my bed is made. Next I go around and open all the curtains, pull up shades, and get that light shining in. :)
Haha! I’m the one who makes the bed with hospital corners and the toss pillows/shams nicely arranged, but usually only on the weekends, because my husband gets up and goes to work much later than I do during the week. (I’m typically walking out the door as his alarm goes off.) I have, however, managed to train him to straighten the sheets and comforter each morning before he leaves, which he defines as making the bed… ;)
I’m the last one out of the bed so it’s my job to make it. And by make it, I mean pull the sheets and comforter up and smooth them out. It’s a king bed so actually making it requires about 20 trips around it pulling and tugging and smoothing. The only time it gets the royal treatment with all the pillows and fluffy stuff is if people are coming over or we’re taking a pic of it. (We made an upholstered faux leather headboard recently so our bed pic has made the rounds on Facebook. We aren’t taking naughty pics on the bed or anything. Just thought I should clarify!)
Im going to sound like a goody-goody but Ive started making our bed each morning. Its had a real impact on the overall neatness of the house! For some reason Ive noticed if the bed is made we are more inclined to keep the rest of the place tidy & picked up too.
I love having a bed that is made. it is so nice to get into at the end of the day. plus my husband and i have wars over the covers so its nice to start with a clean slate every night. he used to go to work later than i did, so the bed got made (by me!) when i got home from work. Now he leaves before i even get out of bed so i make it after my coffee. :)
I HAVE to have the bed made, but its not hospital corners. As long as the sheets are straight and the duvet covers everything, I’m good!
I prefer the bed to be made before I start my day, and I’m the one who does it. When I was working outside of the home, it didn’t always get done, but it didn’t matter as much because I wasn’t home to see it. Now that I work from home, I take the time every morning to put it in order.
Oh, and I totally do hospital corners. It’s what I learned as a kid.
I make my bed every single morning. I don’t know if I would go as far as to say it has hospital corners, but it is quite straight.
OK, I admit it . . . I hate making the bed so much that I get up when my wife does so SHE will make it – something she herself insists on. After she goes out to work at 6:30 AM (teacher) I sometimes snooze in the recliner.
Our cat is the only one allowed to delay the making of the bed, and only on weekends.
The best must be made every day. I usually make the BF do one side and I do the other, so it only takes about 3 seconds. I feel so disorganized walking into my room and seeing the bed unmade. It throws off my chi.
We usually never make our bed in the morning. Like some of the previous posters, we’re lucky to make it out the door in time to get to work every morning. Also, we have two cats that are either sleeping in the bed or think it’s playtime for them when we do make the bed!
I love having a bed that is made: a neat comforter and pillows—the whole deal. It’s a must at my place and I do it everyday, or my boyfriend does because he knows how much I like having a neat bed when I come home. And I agree that it’s much nicer getting into a bed that’s been made at the end of the day. The sheets feel fresher.
my bed is made only when company is coming over and I know my bedroom door will be open. . . when I first moved into my house I tried to make it everyday, but since getting Emmett (the dog) I have to wake up earlier and have even less time to get things done so my bed pays the price.
Our bed is always made by me, of course, my husband could care less. But my mom always insisted our beds were made when we were kids. I had a friend growing up who wouldn’t always make her bed in the morning, but she always made it, even if it was right before she was going back to bed, something about having the sheets all straightened out. I totally get that.
The bed has to be made before I get into it each night. My husband isn’t the best at making it, so he at least straightens it for me before he leaves (I leave before he does in the morning) and I fix it when I get home.
Love, love, love the pic of Burger and sometimes I have the same dilemma with my yorkies Mario & Mia!
we never make the bed unless we are having company over that would want a tour of the house. otherwise, we just close the door. even if i tried to make the bed my two boston terriers would burrow in the covers and mess it up anyhow!
I love crawling into a made bed. I just love it when the sheets are nice and tight, and if I fold over the duvet cover for a little while before we jump into bed, they’re nice and cold. I try to make the bed everyday when I get home from work, sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t, but I try!
Okay, this is my one thing that I HAVE to do. I have three kids under 8, the youngest is 2, and most of the rest of the house looks like it has barely survived a hurricane — but when I walk in my bedroom, there’s my bed: pillows fluffed, quilt smoothed, everything right where it’s supposed to be. It’s like the eye of the storm; a little sanity break in the rest of my chaotic existence.
completely unrelated, but thought it was right up your alley.

I make the bed the minute we get up and our Lab and Boxer are off the bed in the morning. I’ve also trained my other half to make it the same way if he should get up later than me. There is nothing worse than coming into our room after work if the bed is a mess! I’ve been like this since I was in grade school :)
I make the bed most mornings are least sometime throughout the day. I have a 3 year old that likes to hide in the pillows, so sometimes you can’t tell it’s been made.
Um… it’s freshly made once a week when I change the sheets! Or when we have company, but generally, nope, we have a messy bed!
We make the bed about 60% of the time. In the winter, we do top sheet, blanket, and comforter with duvet cover. When it warms up, we only use the comforter with duvet cover. Since we both have dust mite allergies, we wash the sheets, comforter, and duvet cover in extra hot water weekly. When it’s time to wash the sheets, we will sometimes let one of the 4 pooches sleep in the bed as a “special treat”.
The bed doesn’t get made during the week because my husband is still sleeping in it when I leave for work – and he “makes” it by throwing the covers and throw pillows in a big pile in the middle! I make it on the weekends though – it makes the room feel so much cleaner and bigger when it is made!
I wish I could say that I make my bed up as soon as I exit it in the morning, however that’s not how it goes. Sometimes I find time before running out the door, but often times I make it up after work or …..dare I say it, right before I get into bed at night. I am however one of those people who HATE to get into an unmade bed {I know wierd right??!!} I think it all goes back to how you were raised. I have friends who make their bed EVERY morning before they leave home, because that’s what was expected of them as a child. When we were growing up we were blessed to have our Nana living with us and she made our beds for us after we left for school each morning…can you say spoiled!!
Blessings,
Lisa
I never make my bed because my guy is usually sleeping in it when I dash off for work early in the morning. I don’t think he’d appreciate hospital corners trapping him in bed all day. Not to mention, our linens look nice when they’re a little messy, so bed making isn’t encouraged in our house.
I try to do this daily. But to me it just means pulling up the sheet and comforter and tossing a few pillows on top. No hospital corners here! We actually don’t even tuck in our sheets because at night we flip the bottom of the comforter and sheets under our feet to keep warm. But, a piece of advice from my grandmother was to always make your bed each day and your bedroom will feel much neater than it really is. Good piece of advice, if you ask me.
I hate to have an unmade bed! In college if I slept in and the choice was between making my bed and getting dressed I would go to my first class in PJs. Now if my fiance is over (he can sleep an extra 2 hours after I get up at the crack of 4:45) it never gets made and it bugs me when I get home from work. I usually end up just leaving it that way, though…doesn’t make much sense to make it at night just to get back in!
The bed is always made in my house. I live in a one bedroom apartment so just the smallest amount of untidyness can make the whole place seem like a mess. However, I have let it go a few times when Calen (my cat) is sprawled out in the middle of the bed like a dog with her belly in the air looking so cute. I love my “furchild”, what can I say!
The bed has to be made. If my bed is made, my room feels clean. And the rule is that the last person out of bed has to make it. (Luckily, my husband feels the same way I do about a made bed.) Pillows, shams and all.
Ha! When we first got married, my husband was a die-hard bed maker – I have always been a slacker. Then we put our townhouse on the market and my mom taught my hubby how to make the bed “pretty” for showings – I think it’s hilariously cute when he shows off his new bed-making skills. :) But now that we’ve moved, we mainly just pull up the sheets to cover the pillows (we have cats that like to jump on the bed) and call it a day unless we have company coming over. We’re slackers, what can I say!!
With two babies under 18 months, my much wished for crisply made-bed, is more of a day-dream than a reality! However, the days that I sneak away and tuck in those sheets, are the nights that I feel like I’m slipping into a spa treatment at bedtime. I’m gonna stop commenting now and go fluff those pillows!
We’re bed-made people. Mostly because my husband refuses to get into the bed until it’s made. Seriously. If the bed stays unmade all day, he’ll make it right before he gets back in bed to go to sleep (I still don’t understand it!). The other reason is that our yellow lab loves to lay on our bed, especially now while the windows are open, but we have a white comforter. So we make the bed and then pull up “his” blanket. He knows he can only get on the bed when his blanket is there, so it keeps all of us happy:)
I HAVE to have a made bed. I absolutely hate getting into a messy be. My husband actually likes the covers really loose, and he thinks I make the bed too tight. So, I am the one to make the bed every morning. I don’t think he would ever make the bed. :)
I do not see the purpose or need to make the bed in the morning when you are just going to crawl right back into it’s comfy goodness at the end of a long day. My wife, on the otherhand, cannot leave the house without the bed being made, so suffice it to say that she makes it each morning while I am in the shower- throw pillows and all! The bed is one of only 2 issues we really differ on. The other is pre-washing dishes before they go into the dishwasher. (I think it’s crazy to have to wash dishes before putting them in a machine who’s sole purpose on this earth is to wash dishes! My wife disagrees)
sometimes we’ll get into the habit for a week or so of making the bed at some point during the day, but 95% of the time we get up and don’t touch it.
Our bed is made everyday. I don’t need the bed made everyday but I hate getting into an unmade bed. Also, the dogs (a lanky lab and a bossy border collie) like to take turns sleeping on our bed when we don’t occupy it. By making the bed I limit the amount of dog hair that I have to sleep with. That being said, the lab thinks he is a lapdog and sleeps on the end of my side of the bed every night, he’s my big baby!
While I feel that the room feels cleaner when the bed is made, I leave for work while my husband is still asleep and he definitely doesn’t make the bed. Sometimes I try and make it when I get home at night – sometimes not. We usually just make it on the weekend!
My husband keeps telling me that there have been numerous studies on NOT making the bed being healthier (air circulation).
I am always late waking up in the morning, so is my husband which means our bed making is limited to straightening the comforter and pillows. I never bother with extra pillows than needed on the bed – my small bedroom screams at me if I pile too much in there. But the unmade bed doesn’t bother me anymore. Growing up I made my bed most of the time, but I am a lot more relaxed now. Its our bedroom, no one is allowed to tell us how to keep it! My mom still makes her bed every morning and I still love messing it up when I visit her.
Making the bed in a morning is a MUST for me! It causes less stress for my day moving forward and I feel complete and ready to leave the house for work. How can you get back in bed at night, if it’s not already made? If the case, I need to first make it before I get in….I’m the one who makes the bed everyday, but I don’t mind it.
I make our bed every morning, and probably always will. When I was a kid my mom would refuse to take us to school until our beds were made, and had no sympathy if we were tardy! It was her pet peeve about the house, and now it’s mine (naturally). I do think she is right though, when the bed is made I feel better about overlooking the pile of laundry that might be piled up in the corner …
Of course I would like to walk in every day to a made bed but the reality if it is I just don’t have time. I would rather sleep as late as I can, which is still only 5:45am. The bed is only made when I have guests staying at the house.
I have a hard time leaving the bedroom in the morning if the bed is unmade – so I always do it myself. I love diving into a freshly made bed in the evening, and my daughter is plopped there several times a day while I get dressed, put away laundry, etc. So yes, our bed is always made unless we’re sleeping in it. Plus it just looks so nice. I try to treat my bedroom live a haven, not a junk room!
I make my bed every morning. And have two little girls who make their’s too! I can not leave the house without all beds being made. I’m a little crazy like that!
Either I or the hubs makes it every day……….whoever is in there last. I am a little more picky about the throw pillows and shams being straightened though!!
Cute pic of Burger!!
