Burning Question: Got It Made?
Lately we’ve been questioned to no end on this subject (inquiring minds want to know!). And we’ve even seen chatter about it in the ol’ blogowebisphere. So we figured it was worth tossing the question out to you guys: is a made bed a morning must in your house? Or is it about as common as a blue moon- or a finished to-do list?

If your bed is accustomed to tightly tucked sheets and perfectly placed pillows, who in your household is usually responsible for keeping said bed in check? Or if you prefer the more relaxed approach, is it because you enjoy the efficiency of crawling into an already unmade bed each night or because, well, maybe there’s a certain chihuahua still sleeping in it?
No judgements here, so don’t be shy. Tell us what goes on in your bedroom… er, um, not like that…

I never used to make the bed, but it seems so much more peaceful in our room when I do, so I started doing it daily. It happens at least by lunch. :) Also, when the bed is made I’ve found we’re less likely to leave our clothes all over the floor since the room already looks cleaner. It’s been a good change for us.
I make my bed on the weekends…maybe. And most of that has to do with the fact that I’ve got a 65 pound golden retriever that is firmly planted right in the very center as soon as I get up!
Don’t feel bad Jill, I’m in the minority too. I always, always make my bed on weekends and hubby “usually” makes it on weekdays. I’d make it on weekdays too except he’s still in it when I leave for work. I do love a made bed though – both the look of it and getting into it at night!
cutest picture of burger!!! oh.. and while I would probably only need to wake up and extra 3 minutes early to get my bed made each morning, I’d rather devote those to sleep. I figure no one ever sees our room and and we are going to go back to sleep anyways. maybe that’s the wrong attitude, but it is what it is.
At our house the bed gets made every morning and I’m the last one up so I make it. There are two reason it gets made every morning: 1)It makes it a lot less likely that I’ll get back into bed after I take a shower and then end up being late to work and 2) if I don’t I’ll get in it at night to find dog toys, lost socks, and whatever else our lab has decided she wanted to nap with that afternoon buried in the bed and dog hair all over the pillows because she likes to sleep on them.
I am single and live alone (well in a share house at the moment but not for much longer), so I don’t have to worry about anyone else’s feelings about making the bed or not. As a completely OCD neat freak I make my bed as soon as I get out of it in the morning! I find that it just instantly makes the room look *finished* and I love the way it looks with the extra pillows and throw cushions all arranged so prettily on the bed. I also don’t like getting into an unmade bed, so I’d just have to make it at some point during the day and I find that it only takes a minute to do it, so why not do it straight away :)
I’ve only been reading your blog for a little while but I just love it! After spending the last 6 years studying and living in various share houses I am about to embark on owning my own home for the first time…I have found so much great information and inspiration on your blog for my plans for my brand new home…you guys are just awesome!
I grew up having to make my bed every morning. Once I got married I decided only if I want to make it will I. I just read last week that you should let your bed sheets air out in the morning before making the bed so now I have a great excuse.
I never make the bed. I also don’t use a top sheet because I can’t stand having the sheets tucked in, but I move around in my sleep and always wake up in the middle of the night with the sheet tied in knots around my legs.
I would make our bed in the morning but our two, count them two, chihuahuas are snuggled deep beneath the covers till the second before i leave when they are forced into their crates.
Well I must admit that I don’t make my bed every morning!! I do love having a made bed though I just don’t always get to it :) It just makes me feel more relaxed when I walk into my room at the end of the day and see it all nice and made. Plus I hate it when the sheets are tossed and crooked….as they get during the night.
I always make my bed as soon as I get up in the morning – it’s fairly easy since we just have a sheet, thin blanker and comforter/duvet. I just pull it all up!
My proudest achievement was teaching my husband how to make the bed FROM SCRATCH! He never put sheets on a bed until he met me! Now I have him doing hospital corners. Yes!
Everyone who makes their bed everyday – read this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4181629.stm
I dont usually make mine because I have a toddler who is sleeping in it when I get up!
My husband is often still in bed when I leave for work and I make my side of the bed with him in in :)
I love a nicely made bed with hospital corners, but it’s my husband that does it best. And since he gets up in the morning, gets ready and leaves me sleeping, it doesn’t happen as often as I would like……hopefully in the next house we will be on more of the same schedule!
Our bed is never, and I mean NEVER made up. The only time our bed is made (with the lovely monogrammed duvet from PB and coordinating pillows I made–clearly a waste of time) is right after we change the sheets. I usually jump in or on the bed right after that, so it doesn’t stay looking pretty for long!
If my hubby is already out of bed (which is most mornings) I make as soon as I’m up, otherwise it’s not made. I hate having to make the bed after I’ve dragged my half-asleep butt up the stairs and into my room. It is just so much nicer rolling back the blankets of a freshly made bed. The whole room feels so much cleaner when the bed is made. Now my kids on the other hand, No way will they ever make their beds and I’ve given up trying to get them to do it. Doors shut, out of sight out of mind. :-)
The first thing I do when I get out of bed is make it! I cannot stand an unmade bed. I have fresh, crisp white cotton sheets, doonas, quilts, pillows that all have to be arranged perfectly before I do anything else. If the cat is asleep there – too bad! Nothing gets in the way of a perfectly made bed.

Never make the bed. My girls watch tv in my room. So one minute they could be laying in bed all quiet. And next they could be jumping up and down in the bed. So making it would be a waste of my time.
Our bed only gets made when visitors are going to see it. I’ve always seen making my bed as a waste of time unless I’m putting sheets on for the first time. I passed any bed-making duties on to my husband who quickly decided that it wasn’t worth it either. :)
I love getting into a made up bed at night, but never have time to do it in the morning. So, if I happen to be talking on the phone for any length of time, I’ll usually wander in and make it while I’m talking. If not, I’ve trained my 7 & 11 year old boys to make the bed before we all get on top of it for story time!
No. Our bed is typically only made 2-3 times per week. First being when the sheets are changed, and then whenever I do a house clean/tidy. That’s partially cause we don’t have much time, and partially, cause there’s usually a furry friend or two still buried under the covers! :)
i never get to make the bed because i have to jet off to work earlier than my hubby does. but we do make it every night right before we go to bed. we both love that fresh feeling right before going to sleep.
I grew up NEVER making the bed but this past holiday season, my husband and I lived with his mother for 2 months and she was a NEAT FREAK! I didn’t want to look bad so I started making the bed every morning while we were there… well I guess I grew a habit because I make the bed EVERY morning now and it really bothers me when the bed isn’t made – weird uh?
I always make our bed in the morning. My mom always told me, “It sets the tone for the day.” Once the beds are made and things are picked up and put up it just makes the whole house feel clean and organized!
As soon as I make the bed our Boston Terrier digs up the sheets and comforter to make his bed! It’s pointless :)
I’m still working my way through your archives (I’m finally in the current year at least!) but I just had to stop on this post and say that the adorable photo of Burger nestled in the blankets makes me desperately want a dog!

i make the bed after i get up, but it’s usually a quick “pull the covers up” job. when the cleaning lady comes every two weeks (love, love, love her!) it looks much better.
