Burning Question: Up Or Down?
This next query was suggested by one of our lovely readers (thanks KK!) and we can’t wait to get your firestorm of feedback. What’s the toilet seat situation at your house? Must it always be left down (or else!)? Is there a rule about the whole shebang (toilet seat and toilet seat cover) always remaining in the lowered position? Is there a “if company’s coming” rule in place? Or is it a “who cares” sort of thing?

Anyone have a man bathroom that has no rules at all? Are there toilet seat related mishaps you’d like to share? Dish the toilet seat dirt.

Both the seat and lid always down. I hate the look of the bowl and but most importantly the thought of aerosolized poo germs with every flush. I try to teach my three year old, but he sometimes enjoys waving his poo goodbye… I tell him that’s just not done, but well, he is only three years old and sometimes he forgets ;-)
The toilet seats in our house always stay down. It’s bad feng shui for them to be up, apparently…because the energy can find its way right down the toilet. :) Or is that just a superstition?? :)
I prefer it down, but I’m a neat freak and have to have everything in order! In our case, currently, we have no other choice. The seat and the cover both fall down immediately. Sometimes, mid stream (for the guys)! Our guests (and the fiance!) hate this. We are working on getting a relacement that fits better! ha, guess I win this battle (for now).
I thought any housebroken human kept the seat down at all times, but I grew up in a predominantly female home. My DH grew up with 2 brothers, and he _still_ doesn’t understand why I think the seat should be down all the time. One has to choose one’s battles, so I just gave in on this one after too long trying. It still annoys me but I’ve learned to live with it.
However, we’re about to adopt a cat, so this may all change: we might have to close the lid, even, which neither of us ever do…
Seat and lid down. Always.
Both down! Our kitty plays in the water otherwise…SICK I know! This is new to me tho. It only took two times to figure out what was going on while we were at work :-)
Seat and lid down. Always. No exceptions.
Both down in both bathrooms! And TP is over not under. I am compulsive
Lid down – ALWAYS (except when in use, of course)!
Down. Down down down. Seat AND lid, always. Because it just looks yucky otherwise. And I’m so glad to see I’m not the only one with this neurosis!
I live alone, but it’s down or ELSE…even when guests come over, lol. When I was growing up, it didn’t really matter in my house. Our master bathroom was also over 2x bigger than the one in my single bedroom condo, where there is far higher potential for something to fall into the toilet now since it is right beside my sink. :-) I also hate the idea of leaving it up b/c it is kinda germy in there, lol.
Toilet lid is always down, even my 3 year old knows to do this. We watched a show years ago about how far the water in a toilet can spray if you leave the lid open and flush. So the lid gets put down then flush. So not only do we hide the toothbrushes and everything but you never know what will have toilet water residue on it otherwise.
Master Bathroom:
Lid down, seat down if I used it last. Lid up, seat up if he did.
I’m going to fight the man on putting the seat and lid down all the time since he’s home more often than I am. I just ask that the door stay shut because our dog is lazy and I don’t want her to wander in there and start drinking out of the toliet because she’s too lazy to go downstairs to her bowl.
In the guest bath, it’s usually both down.
At our house, the lid must be kept down. It’s a sanitary thing (always lid down for flushing), as well as a practical thing – we have cats who used to like to drink from the toilet when they were younger.
Well, it’s always been seat down at my house. Even with brothers, they were all taught to put the seat back down. Never really put much consideration into the lid though… As for the look of lid up vs. lid down, I don’t think there is much of a difference. But after reading some of these posts about the whole germ-and-toilet-spray-thing, I might start making more of an effort to keep the lid down as well.
When my gf married her DH, he’d just remodeled his house to add a master suite, HUGE family room with a bar, and bathroom. Since he was a bachelor when he did it all, he decided he wanted a urinal in the new bathroom (off the bar) since it would be convenient for him & his buddies…and who has a urinal in their house? For real?? She absolutely HATES that urinal and has taken to decorating it for the holidays in an attempt to try and make him see how dumb it is, haha!
