Bloggy Bonuses
We thought we’d use this lazy Sunday to point out a few “extras” on and around Young House Love that are new and/or new to you. So excuse this decidedly not-home-related post, but hopefully it’ll help us get to know you guys a little better and vice versa.
1. Gravatars: We finally enabled gravatars, which explains the little pictures you’ve started seeing next to certain comments. A gravatar (i.e. globally recognized avatar) is a picture you assign to your e-mail address so that picture of you (or whatever image you prefer) shows up when you post on certain blogs or forums. You can set one up here for free. Hopefully that’ll help us put more faces to names… or at least put pictures of dogs, kids, favorite flowers, etc to names.

2. Twitter: If you’ve noticed the “Tweet Nothings” widget on our sidebar, then you probably already know that we’re on Twitter. I’m the primary tweeter between the two of us, using it to share tidbits that aren’t quite full-post-worthy and keeping you updated when we’re on the move (like if we’ve just spotted a new deal while out shopping). We’d love to mutually follow more of you, so check us out here and click “follow” under our picture. No clue what Twitter is? Watch this to get you started.

3. Facebook: Many of you know we’ve also got a Facebook Fan Page, but for those who don’t, you can find us here. We love having a chance to get to know you a little better through Facebook, plus we totally appreciate you wearing us proudly on your profile for all to see. Speaking of which, if there’s ever a specific post that you want to share on Facebook (or via email) you can do it easily by using the “Share This” button that you see at the bottom of each post. We promise not to SuperPoke you in return. And if you’re really digging one of our posts, you can Digg it or Stumble Upon it using the “Share This” button as well- which would really mean a lot (and let us know what you guys love so we can give you more of that).

So that’s our dose of technical miscellany for the weekend. Hopefully we’ll be connecting with more of you soon. Plus, if you have any tips on the techie tools above, or suggestions for other little blog extras, we’d definitely love to hear ‘em!

I am so inspired by you two that I gave you both a little shout out on my latest blog. :) hope you’ll read it. You two are amazing! and I admire your diligence. I even had my parents take a look because they’ve been doing dIY projects for over 15 years in the house they live in…and its still not CLOSE to being done. hha . thanks for the great site!
Aw thanks Lauren! We just dropped in on you and left you a little message.
xo,
Sherry (& John)
The internet is so awesome! Good to know y’all are more than willing to help fuel my design blog reading obsession!
Happy Sunday!
Hey guys! I too have started to read your blog religiously! I am only 25 and trying to fix up my house (it’s a VERY slow process on one, fresh-out-of-school income), so you have been a great source of ideas and inspiration!
I signed up for Twitter a few months ago, when I started blogging, but I only decided lately to actively use it. It’s quickly becoming as addictive as Facebook! Keep up the great work!
Jen
I saw your Twitter comment (I can’t recall my login info at the moment) and I did pick up the premiere ish of Fresh Home. Jury is still out. It is definitely more DIY than anything else with projects for a footstool, table, coffee table, and mosaic pots. Good article on choosing color for your walls and on mold and mildew in your house. I’ll likely flip through the next issue, but I’m not in love with it yet.
Nifty!
My parents and sister now read your blog too – the whole family loves it!
Keep up the good work!
Love your site, as always, and love the new ways to keep up with the new things you guys are doing! I always wonder though, how does John find time to blog during the day with a full time job? I have a hard enough time blogging once after work every day! you guys are too good…
Hey Audrey,
People often ask me about blogging at work. My big “secret” is that I do most of my post writing at night and then Sherry takes care of publishing it the next day. But I do sneak in the occasional Twitter & read comments every once and a while when I get a spare moment. Fortunately, I work in an industry (marketing) that’s putting a lot of attention on blogs and Twitter lately so it practically counts as “research.”
Oh, and Danielle: thanks for your thoughts on Fresh Home. I got the same impression from my quick flip through.
Love seeing all the gravatars all of the sudden, btw!
-John
Hmmm… I know I’ve uploaded a photo into my email account, and when I tried to “sign up” with the link you gave, it said my email address was already taken. Does that mean that, when I click the submit button below, I’ll see my mug on your blog??? Let’s find out :)
No dice!!! Back in a few…
Okay, last try for today :)
Thanks for the heads up about gravatar! Oh and it’s snowing for the first time in Richmond for 3 years, so soak it up (and drive 25 mph everywhere because no one knows how to drive here…)!
Hey – check me out! I think I’ve got it :) Thanks, guys!!!
Let’s see if mine works…
Yay! :D
GOT IT!!! thanks guys!
Okay, I took your advice and signed up for my gravatar. Thought I’d come back here and test it. Let’s see if my photo shows up! :-)
I didn’t show up. Maybe it needs a little more time? Hmmmm…
Hey Julia,
I unfortunately can’t explain all the weird quirks of gravatars, but I know it has taken others a bit of time for it to show up. The only other reminder I usually offer is to make sure you’re registering the same address that you use to comment. Hopefully it’ll pop up for you soon. Our fingers are crossed for you.
-John
As always, I love your blog and designs. I would love to do what you guys do, my friends are always asking me for design help and I’d love to get paid doing what I love!! Actually I’m commenting to see if my gravatar works…. lol
Thanks for the heads up(s), especially with the gravatar info. Very cool!
ok..i did it
Wow, you two sure are thorough! I just got redirected here from your salsa post and saw that you updated the pictures with your new blog name and everything! How do you remember these posts from months back when you post a few times a day? You amaze me!
Aw thanks, Sarah! What can we say – July was a busy month! We did a full sweep of our blog to rid it of the TYH name to (1) avoid confusion for any new readers and (2) be sure a certain not-to-be-named organized had reason to send us any more “love letters.” It was quite a task but sure feels good to be thorough. Let us know if you ever catch a spot we missed, though!
-John
Thanks for the information on the gravatar. You’re becoming all things to all people … decor inspiration and technology advice too! Thanks again.
New reader and I love what you guys are doing. I’ll also be checking you out on Facebook. Thanks for the time you two put in.
I’m glad to see you’re branching out to Twitter. It is my new obsession and now I can follow another of my favorite sites!
Just started getting into Twitter. I wasn’t sure it would catch on but now that I’m on there, I will be following you two. Thanks!
Awesome!, will try it today!
I’m SO technologically challenged :P
Is Twitter still working out well for you two? I’ve been wanting to get on there but have heard spam is starting to take over a bit now that it’s so popular.
We love Twitter! It’s a great way to spread the word about things very quickly. As opposed to writing up a more formal blog post we can just tweet about a furniture sale or a discount code or even a reader’s makeover (with a link). Love it.

I’m starting to catch up in the Twitter world as well. I’ll try following you on there too. Thanks!
I’ve followed all your tips. Thanks very much.
I have use twitter a lot and you have provide a great information about it. Thank you for sharing this!
Twitter is a place that people are searching for connection and information. For me as a blogger who is interested in giving people information and drawing people together into community.
They say twitter is like micro blogging. The good thing for you guys is people we be seeing what you put down almost instantly. That is why Twitter is catching on so fast. Good to see it is working out for you guys.
I was out shopping today at a local shop and found a WHITE DOG just like the one of yours that got broken. I couldn’t believe it!
Amazing! Here’s hoping one turns up in our neck of the wood someday!

Love your site! For me its a daily check and see what up with YoungHouseLove. I love decorating but currently have run into an issue. Our living room happens to be similar to the green you have in your kitchen. We have a white fireplace that takes up one whole end. I have a dark chocolate couch and light tan chairs and ottoman. Issue is I have black picture frames and some black shelves in there as well. Whats your take on dark brown and black together? Should I just do one or the other? I’m in the process of redoing and would like to keep expenses down.
Katie
I like them! As long as they’re both nice and layered (not a bunch of brown stuff with one black item that looks mismatched or accidental) then they read as intentional – so I think it works!
