Reader Redesign: The Lovely Loo
Get a load of Kelly’s budget bathroom makeover. Here’s her letter:
We’ve been working really hard on the house and it seems that the most “done” room is of course the smallest – one of the bathrooms! Here’s what the bathroom looked like when we moved in:
And this is what the bathroom looks like today after we replaced the old cracked toilet, painted the walls, replaced the light fixture, spruced up the existing counter and bought a slew of accessories:
This bathroom was redone for a total of… (DRUMROLL PLEASE!)… approximately $399!!! By shopping thrift stores and looking for good prices at big box stores it’s possible to really change a room’s look without making it look matchy matchy! – Kelly
Needless to say we love Kelly’s frugal yet fabulous makeover (click here for more details on her blog). From the new light fixture to the punchy paint, it really looks like a whole new room. And we especially love those bows on the shower curtain rings. Adorable!

Wow! I really had to look closely to see that there were not more changes–the paint and light fixture made a huge difference! I love the use of the basket in the space I’m guessing used to have a vanity seat. Smart!
The makeover is GREAT! That looks like almost the identical color I used on a wall in my sewing room, and it makes me happy every time I’m in there. Also am really loving the black/green combination right now. Cool idea with the basket.
My bath is the most “done” room as well. Great job with this one!

Non-sequitur: Sherry, have you had the “toilet seat up or down” discussion yet? I’m so picky about keeping mine down.

I just jumped on her blog……..she has “THE GREAT” soap dispenser from Target and she spray painted the counter.

I too, thought ewwwwww………lid alert. I always keep mine down.
How did she spary paint the counter? I can’t find that she posted instructions yet. I would love to know & to find out if it works/lasts.
Yeah, I am so waiting for that info as well!

What a great makeover!
Question: did you paint over the beams on the ceiling of the former “hunting lodge” in your casa?
Hey Natalie,
Why yes we did. Oil-based primer followed by two coats of semi-gloss latex paint made our ceilings feel feet higher! We don’t mind wooden beams in rooms with vaulted ceilings, but in our case the dark wood really closed things in. Hope it helps!

I am impressed! I felt pretty wasteful when we tore our bathroom apart down to the studs. What you did was cost effective and make a major impact! Good job.
Hey guys! Thanks so much for the awesome comments and welcome everyone who’s visited my blog! I went ahead and made a big long post about how to do the spray painted countertop. I felt like I wrote a book, but I wanted to be sure to put in all the things I learned and what did and didn’t work for me in the process. It was a lot of trail and error, but ended up turning out great by the end!
The moral of my countertop story is – don’t be afraid to try something before you get rid of it and replace it with something new! I knew the alternative to painting the countertop was us having to buy a new one…so I figured I didn’t have much to loose!

I am new to your blog. I read lots of decorating blogs and found my way to you through one of them (Sorry, can’t remember which one.) Any one – your blog has fast become one of my favorite “reads” every morning. I’m old enough to be your Mom but still find so much inspiration here. It makes me want to get up and do something!
