Window Shopping: Target Hits The Mark

By now you’ve all probably heard about Tar-jay’s Home Design Event (we’ve seen it mentioned  here, here and here just to name a few) so we decided to drop in and see what all the fuss was about. And boy was it worth all the aforementioned fuss. So we stealthily shot some photos to share our ten favorite items. Here’s what we’re loving.

#1. These rugs. At just 29 clams a piece, these 3×5s are a super easy way to add a happy splash of personality to any room in your home. They even felt durable enough for a kitchen and they’re certainly cheap enough!

#2: This chair. This gray armchair is pretty freakin’ fabulous. We sat in it. It was comfy. We looked at the back and the sides of it (often where craftsmanship goes out the window) and it appeared to be impeccably made. And the price for this sophisticated wing chair? $299. Yeah, we gasped too.

#3: These towels. We love these beachy blue towels that sport a chic little embossed shell detail and a luxe fluffy texture to boot. And at just 9-12 beans they’re as cheap as the old tattered ones in your closet that you probably picked up five years ago. 2009 is the year for new bath towels!

#4: These frames. These simple square linen frames look a lot more expensive than their $10 price tag. The square shape is super crisp and current and the textured fabric is so Nate Berkus. Just pop in a favorite picture and admire the finished product.

#5: These stools. We picture these nautical woven stools in an all white bathroom with a stack of white fluffy towels on them. Of course our bathrooms are too tiny to accommodate even the smallest of stools, but hopefully someone out there can turn our fantasy into a reality.

#6: This art. Two years ago we actually ordered a sea fan and purchased a white frame to showcase it. The total cost for the project was around $30. So when you think about the fact that this beefy and beautiful sea fan is already framed and ready to go (on a chic linen backdrop no less) it’s definitely worth the $39 price tag.

#7: This wallpaper. That’s right, Target is selling wallpaper. And it’s not your grandmother’s. Some of it is even flocked and embossed for a high-end look on a budget (just $29 a roll). We’re not always huge wallpaper fans (mostly because it’s more complicated than a coat of paint) but we’d love to see this one on the back of a bookcase, in a closet, or even under a piece of glass on a desk or coffee table.

# 8: This lamp. We loved these oversized etched glass based lamps (with an opening at the bottom to accommodate everything from photographs and wine corks to sea shells and ornaments if the mood strikes). They’d look super swanky flanking a sofa or bed, and at $89 a pop they’re a lot less expensive than the average humongous glass lamp (which usually runs ya $150+, even at Big Lots).

#9: And this lamp. You may notice a pattern from here on out. The lamp selection was by far our favorite part of the entire Home Design Event. These cheerful green glass lamps (with patterned shades that glow for added interest and ambiance) will run you just $49.99 a pop. And I must admit I almost walked out with one of them for my desk- they’re just so springy and fun.

#10: And this lamp. Told you there was a pattern. But we couldn’t resist the urge to add these pearlescent oversized glass gourd lamps to our list of items that we adore. They’re large and in charge with dramatic lines and warm linen-ish shades and for just $89 you can make one yours. We know this might sound pricey for a lamp, but trust me, these big guys will make a room. So save on the rug, get $10 Ikea curtains, but grab this lamp and the whole space will shout “posh and proud of it.”

There you have it. Our top ten picks at Target’s Home Design Event. Of course the prices may vary from store to store (goodness knows we learned this last week) and availability will fluctuate so this list is by no means exhaustive. In fact there were many an empty shelf at our Target so we’re keeping an eye out for more stuff over the next few weeks. And we wanna know what you’re loving. Anything we missed? Anything you purchased? Do tell.

THIS must be why I felt like going to Target this weekend. Not for anything in particular, I just had an urge.

Sadly, I neglected it. Maybe this weekend I’ll have time to stop by and peruse the awesome additions to their merchandise. Thanks so much for sharing the great news!!

i thought the prices seemed even more reasonable than your average target price-points…sometimes i feel like their prices are a little high for some items that are clearly not made as well, but these prices are a little lower than what target normally offers…interesting. also, i thought i twas funny that they are selling philosophy items!!

I love the sea fan. I saw a great sea fan while shopping the other day with a 700 dollar price tag!! This one is just as cute and much more affordable!

Love the sea fan art. Should go well in my bathroom! Thanks!

Also, if you buy online most things are 30% off! I just ordered the sea fan for $27.99!! Thanks Sherry! :)

Thank you! I just finished an (endless) makeover of my bathroom, so this is really timely. I have my eye on those towels to start.

That chair is not comfortable at all. I sat in it and it was stiff and hard. Sometimes that’s a good thing but not in a chair.

Wow, I had no idea!! Target trip tonight!! Woo hoo

Even better, all of the Home Design Event products are 30% off for a limited time. Not sure if this is the case in store but it is online.

I snagged a couple of things to dress up my bed but I wish I was redoing my bathroom right now. All of the bath stuff is so great, including the storage cabinets.

And in other target news, I though some of you might appreciate this: http://sfgirlbybay.blogspot.com/2009/01/oh-its-orla-kiely-for-target.html

I’m certainly crazy excited about it!

Great post! Now I want to go to my local Target store. FYI, the linen frames are on sale for $6.99 on Target.com. You are right about the price variation. I live about 20 miles from my Mom and I’ve found a lot of items to be $2-$3 more than it is at my local Target than the one close to my Mom. So I usually go to my local Target to check things out, but I would buy it when I go visit my Mom.

Did you get a chance to sit on that chair? How comfy was it?

Wow – what an awesome post.

I am lusting after those chairs for my TV room.

This is why I lament the fact that we have no Targets in Canada.

Hey Landry,

I sat the chair and agree with Brittany’s evaluation that it’s a little on the stiff side. That being said, we own two other Target chairs (Dolce Lounge chairs) and they break in over time- now they’re super comfy. Hope it helps!

Anyone else have a chance to test it out that could weigh in?

-John

Are these things on sale in the store also, or just online?

I just spent over $300 at Target.com! I’m very concerned that my husband is going to try and block your website:) Very excited about Orla Kiely for Target.

Clearly I have to get to Target – sooner rather than later! Or do as Michelle and Nichole and some others – and get even greater discounts by shopping online! Still need to get to the store though for an in-person look-see! That’s still the best! Thanks youngsters!

I’ve sat on the gray chair in the store. I have to agree that the seat is quite firm (I think it’s just a big piece of dense foam), but I think that it would help hold it’s shape over time. On their website, you could have a pair of them shipped to RVA for $576.43. I guess that saves about $11 per chair. I might just have to do this.

i would definitely recommend checking out the stuff in person, even if you decide to order online. a lot of the stuff looked way better in person then it did online.

I just saw all this the other day and I have to say I was quite impressed. It’s funny that you mention the sea fan. It was the piece that I most looked at. The cushion on the gray chair is another of my favorites.

Well, I’m going to be in trouble! I’m not even through looking at everything, and I have a big wish list! Love it all!

I ordered two of those chairs for my living room and got them on Friday. I actually didn’t know that they had them at the store at the time but I got a GREAT deal online. Free shipping, 15% off plus $5 off! it came out to $540 for both including tax!

John,

You said the chairs get more comfy over time. How long did it take? I like what I’ve seen (design wise) but the reviews always complain about how hard they are. I’m curious if they’re worth buying.

Just wanted to drop some advice from a seasoned Target shopper. This stuff will start getting marked down for clearance VERY soon. I hear that it may be in the next week or so. They have to make room for Patio furniture so this set will have to go. This is a lot like Global Bazaar in years past at Target. So, if you see something you like keep an eye on it. It will get marked down to 30% off soon and about 2 weeks after that, 50% off. Finally about a month or maybe 5 weeks after the markdowns begin, it will go to 75% off. Happy Bargain Hunting!!

Awww.. I wish we had a target. We’re at a loss for cute, home stuff. I’m loving a lot of the stuff you featured!

OMG, I am drooling at my desk! Must. Go. To. Target. ASAP. LOL! Thanks for the heads up on this awesome sale and event!

I too loved this Target event, I’ve been twice in the last week to browse. I bought the large zebra print pillow to sit on our sofa. I’m also diggin’ the mirrors and art they’ve got right now.

Hey Brittany,

Our Dolce Lounge chairs (from Target, still available by the way) appear to have the same foam seating pad as the gorge gray chairs above. We’ve had them around two years and after two-three weeks of casual use (perching in them to pet the dog, write a grocery list, etc) they were broken in and perfect for extended sitting (full movie viewing, reading all of the Twilight books, etc). You just have to remember to sit in them (and any chair in your home, for that matter) otherwise they’re just unused objects taking up space. At which point Burger declares them as “his chair” and you never get to sit in ‘em again cause he’s curled up in a pillow atop “his chair” glaring at you like “you want to sit where??? get your own”.

Happy chair hunting!

xo,
Sherry

Oh, I think those gourd lamps want to come live at my house. Thanks for info!

It seems the prices are cheaper online. Those etched lamps are $62.99. However, I worry about ordering glass items online. But you should know that I’ve had great success with returning online orders to the actual local store, thusly saving on return shipping, etc. It’s quite simple to return something to Target.

My favorite two items at this event are this wood trunk and this stool.

The colors and natural striping of the wood on both of these items is beautiful! (Not sure why the website says these are not available in stores. They were both at my Target.)

I had read your post this morning, and coincidentally had to head to Target to return something, and to my surprise everything…and I mean EVERYTHING…in the collection is marked down on clearance (30% off)!! I too loved the sea fan and snagged it for $27.98!! You can’t beat it. And, seeing it in person, the frame is gorgeous…it is very shadow box like, so if after a while I tire of the sea fan, you could definitely switch it up with anything else! There was still ample selection at my target…multiples of most everything left…Happy Shopping!

Thanks so much for sharing those great ideas! Love them all!!

yeah! i picked up the cute little rug over the weekend…and today when i went in everything was marked down…really exciting…
i also looove AND WANT this!

I just love Target! I could almost be the only store on the planet. Almost!

Oh wow. I wonder if Australian Target will hook into this? Here’s hoping!

I must be victim of the Target price gouging you reported on earlier, all this stuff was WAY more at my local Target.

That chair is 209 at my tar-jay!!

Ahh…I cannot wait for a Target to open around here! We actually have 2 in the works, but neither is open just yet!

I’m curious about your idea to wallpaper a bookshelf though; we have two old rather hideous ones (MDF covered with some kind of faux-wood laminate) that we need for storage but I’d really rather not look at them. My dad told me that paint wouldn’t stick to it well, and since we store books on it, they might stick to the paint as well. Could you wallpaper (or do something with Modg-Podg?) on top of the laminate? What do you think?

Also… check out Pier 1… they are having a monsterous sale.

I went to my local Target last night and all the Home stuff was marked down 30% and most of it was already gone! I did get one of the rugs that y’all mentioned so hopefully it will work in my room.

Clever idea to turn the 3×5 rugs into a larger floor coverings: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/how-to/how-to-create-a-quick-cheap-rug-041022

This stuff is all so cute, I will have to go check it out! I am loving the Umbra line they got in a couple weeks ago, I got a lovely swirly wine rack.

This is so funny! I just saw this same display of fantastic rugs at my Target a few days ago and thought, “John and Sherry will totally love these. I bet they’ll blog about them.” And, what do you know, here they are?!! I feel like such a mind reader! I just wish they made the rugs in a larger size.

The Gray Armchair is selling on Target.com as a set of 2 for only $419 now! What a bargain!

I finally got to Target last night (braving the -14 degree temperatures) and everything in this section at the one I went to (Roseville, MN) was already 30% off. If my DH and I weren’t in saving mode, I would have definitely made a number of purchases. Still thinking about the capiz wall hanging to go behind our TV…

Also, to any of your MN readers, Cost Plus World Market is going out of business here in MN. Last night, everything was 10-20% off, and the clerk told me they’ll continue to get merchandise in until the MN warehouses are empty–and I’m guessing the deals will get really good by the last days. He said it could be anywhere from 1 week until they close or a month until they close.

Since we’re talking about sales, I wanted to mention that I bought some terrific panel curtains from JCPenney last fall. $34 each, regularly $80. I love them and want more. No such luck. They haven’t gone on sale since.
I decided to send an email to JCP customer service and ask if I could order more (yet a diff color, blah blah blah) and get the same sale price. I did reference my original order number…

Guess what! Less than 24 hours later, they CALLED me to say YES! What do I need? How many? Free shipping to my house or do I prefer store pick up.

I give this a WOW for outstanding customer service and I’m excited that I’ll receive the “PB Wheat” knock off at JCP that Sherry and John called for in my dining room.
YES!

I hope Target does this again this year! Last year I purchased a HUGE and awesome coffee table made of woven rattan (75% off too!) It’s probably one of my favorite things in my home! I was just bummed that they had the event before I owned my home, so I wasn’t comfortable buying everything without knowing what my future home would need. So this year, bring it on!

Thanks,
Caitlin
