Beth & Aaron’s Color Conundrum
When Beth and Aaron asked for our hue help to create a romantic retreat we got right to work. Here’s their letter:
We’ve worked our way around the house and the last room we have to redo is (of course) our master bedroom. We need to keep the main furniture suite but definitely want to do away with the crappy duvet and we’d like new window treatments. The master bedroom exits into a hallway which is deep khaki, and a two-story foyer which is light sage green. We’d like to create a warm, rich, romantic retreat. We love browns and blues and rich tones (other rooms in the house include navy blues, light blues, deep reds, etc.). There are few colors we hate… but we’re open to suggestions! We’d love to consider deep purples and chocolates but are worried about how they’ll mesh with the light cherry colored furniture in the bedroom. That’s why we need your help! – Beth & Aaron

We love that Beth and Aaron adore rich saturated tones, and we’re certain that a hefty portion of moody and sophisticated color is exactly what this bedroom needs to transform into the romantic retreat that they so desire. Here are three different palettes to make that master bedroom sing:

Color, glorious color! And now for the disclaimer: Beth and Aaron should definitely snag each paint chip and hold ‘em up in their space before settling on a scheme due to the fact that the rendering above isn’t nearly as rich and dimensional as the true color swatches (and is only as accurate as your monitor). On to the color palette breakdown.
1. The bottom swatch in each palette represents the gorgeous cherry wood furniture that will remain in the space, and the deep chocolate brown in this scheme represents the color that we’d love to see in the curtains and the bedspread (Benjamin Moore’s Grizzly Bear Brown is a good swatch to keep on hand as a guide- it has enough red in it to work with the cherry wood). The cool slate blue color (Benjamin Moore’s New Hope Gray) is for the walls, and it’ll instantly inject a soothing and serene ambiance while balancing the warm tones in the wood for an inviting and complementary effect. White trim will keep things feeling current and crisp, and the entire room will literally transform before their very eyes.
2. This palette incorporates the eggplant hues that Beth and Aaron mentioned in their letter while bringing in a lighter powder violet tone to keep things from getting too dark and brooding. We’d love to see the powder violet color (Benjamin Moore’s Hazy Lilac) on the walls with crisp white trim and curtains while the deeper eggplant color is worked into the bedding (they should bring Benjamin Moore’s Exotic Purple as a guide when they go shopping). This rich and luxe look will definitely create a bold and romantic retreat, and the powder violet color will again balance the red undertones in that gorgeous wood for a cohesive and serene effect.
3. Our last scheme is definitely a little out there, but we so enjoy the chance to incorporate deep and dunamic hues that we had to add it to the mix as a gutsier option for our color loving homeowners. In this scheme the walls would be painted a rich chocolate brown (again with enough of a red undertone to complement the cherry furniture in the space- try Benjamin Moore’s Grizzly Bear Brown). And with such a deep enveloping color on the walls, this room can definitely handle another liberal shot of color… which leads us to that fabulous raspberry tone. Some rich pink bedding like this (Benjamin Moore’s Gypsy Pink is a good guide when shopping) along with some yellow throw pillows (look for some close to Benjamin Moore’s Mellow Yellow) and some other yellow accessories (perhaps yellow glass-based lamps or even new yellow upholstery for that bench at the foot of the bed) will really make the room an exotic escape at the end of a long day. Oh and chocolate curtains very close to the wall color will complete the cocoon like feel (curtains that match deep wall colors are very much in style these days- and they really draw the eye out the window).
So there you have it. Three bold and fabulous ways for Beth and Aaron to inject some serious style into their master suite. We can’t wait to hear what you guys think- especially you Beth and Aaron!

WOW!
Thank you so very much. We absolutely LOVE your suggestions.
And guess what… We think the bold #3 option is the way to go. And we love it so much, we just went ahead and bought the quilt you suggested! : )
Again, thanks for the wonderful suggestions. January is a busy work month for us, but maybe we can get the room repainted in time for Valentine’s. We look forward to getting you some great “after” pictures just as soon as we’re done.
the quilt is awesome!
As soon as I looked at these colors I already know which group I would select. Between my wife and I, group #1 is definitely what you two should agree on. That slate would absolutely make your room cozy and romantic. The other choices are good, but none of them compare to #1. Good luck!
