i made a gumdrop wreath for our front door, after seeing one on etsy that i loved. (inspiration seen here: http://ny-image1.etsy.com//il_430xN.109641729.jpg) ours has big and little gumdrops, and a big red bow where the hanging loop hits the wreath. it cost about $15 and two hours, so it's totally re-do-able if we decide to pitch it when we take down our christmas decor, but i just love it, so i think i'll varnish it over and keep it for years to come--a sweet reminder of our first christmas married. =)

I make my own wreaths. We have a fake one, sinec I get sick from real evergreen. But it's more cost effective that way. This one cost $10 and then I decorated it by wiring on pinecones, berry garland, some little snowflake ornaments, and a pretty bow.

Most definitely! A wreath with a velvet red bow, pine cones, and fresh pine branches- I absolutely love how it sets the mood.

We are also grad students on a tight budget, yet I love the smell and look of a real pine wreath and boughs. This is the trick I discovered. The Home Depot near me has a large black bin of discarded pine branches from the Christmas trees they sell and wrap. I asked the person working there if I could have some and she gladly told me to take as many as I wanted. I filled up an entire shopping cart and took them home and made my own wreath with a wire frame and floral wire. It really is easy and so satisfying to make my own free wreath! Also, I buy discounted ribbon after Christmas and use that for a bow. I also look around my own yard and neighborhood for pinecones, bittersweet, red berries or interesting pine branches. In years past I've collected enough branches to share with a friend and we make our wreaths together--so fun! I'm sure there are some online tutorials for making your own wreath. Good luck!

What great ideas there are out there. Thanks for doing this post!

I love my last initial (B) and this year bought a faux B wreath from Ballard Designs; they also sell real ones, but I wanted it to last and last and last. I wrapped tiny clear lights around around it, and looped a beautiful aqua blue ribbon through the holder, tied a bow on it and hung the ribbon over our outdoor light, next to our front door--which isn't wreath friendly due to it's windows and ledge. It looks so pretty!

Hey everyone,
Thanks for sounding off about seasonal wreaths. It's super interesting to learn the whats and the whys of everything wreath-related. All that door decor sounds festive and fabulous!
Oh and Court, you do water live wreaths (actually you mist them with water from a spray-bottle) so that might help perk up your dry guy. Happy spritzing!
xoxo,
Sherry

I always have a wreath of some sort on my door...they usually reflect the season or the current holiday. Right now it's a pine wreath with a red and gold bow with jingle bells tied to it.
