Burning Question: A White Christmas?
By now you guys probably know what type of holiday lights we’re partial to when it comes to holiday decorating, but we want to know what you guys grab when it’s time to give your home some seasonal sparkle.

Do you prefer to deck your halls with the classic and crisp look of clear/white lights? Or is it the playful hues of the multi-colored varieties that really get your homeĀ into the holiday spirit? Dish the Christmas light dirt.

We’ve always been swayed towards the classic white lights, but this year we thought we’d mix it up. We still decorated the outside of our house with white lights, but put multi-colored lights on the tree. Our ornaments are so different and colorful, the multi-colored lights really do look a lot better on our tree!
I like the multi-colored light on our tree, mostly because none of my ornaments are matchy-matchy and I think the colored lights help them blend together. As far as outside lights go, I like classic white.
i actually like both but when used well.
Clear white lights inside & out. I am like clean & simple. In my son’s room, it’s all solid blue lights, to match his cottagey blue room.
It’s a winter wonderland, with whites, silvers & pale blues.
the tackier the better with christmas decorating so multi-colored lights are my choice!
white white white!!! that said, we have colored on our tree. my husband asked last year, saying they reminded him of his childhood trees. i knew just what he meant, and i surprised him. we’ll be doing colored again this year, it means more to him to have colored than it does for me to have white. you know, the old ‘pick your battles’…
White on tree, white outside, white on the mantle, white in baskets. Just white lights in my house.
White lights only. It’s the look we love.
colored lights look so great when outside on trees/bushes covered with snow, but NEVER inside- white only. I’d say when in doubt, go with white lights. when tastefully done, blue lights outside can look very polished- the university that I went to always had blue lights everywhere- the color of lights used in Paris for Christmas :)

I like both. We have white on our pre-lit fake tree. I would love to get some of the old-school style large colored bulbs to put out on the deck.
Colored lights on our real tree trimmed with an eclectic mix of ornaments. Plain white outside.
My kids just love seeing colored lights, so as with everything else, I aim to please them :)
I think colored are more fun. We have white right now because our tree is pre-lit with them, but I love big colored bulbs the best.
White Lights – for sure
We’ve got colour LEDs mixed with tiny whites to tease the teeny disco balls on the tree, and white on the house with blue and green on the trees and bushes. The variations have changed as the bulbs burn out and we change to eco-options.
White lights on the tree and colors outside – if you are ever in Baltimore, you have GOT to check out the Christmas lights on 34th street in Hamden, they are wonderful!
Merry Christmas to you and your families – I love your blog!

White on the tree, white on the fireplace mantle, white outside. That said – as long as people stick with one light “theme” – I think it’s fine. I can’t stand when people light up one tree in their yard in little blue lights, then have big multi-colored lights on their bushes, and then white lights on the mailbox — pick one and keep it consistent!
Gold!!!!! Our entire tree is decorate with deep red and gold glittery ornaments, and the gold lights emphasize the warmth of it all. I feel like white would be too stark for us, and colored lights too “messy” for our strictly red and gold palette.
My husband and I debate this every year and have come to the conclusion that white=classy and colored=festive…he prefers white, I prefer colored, but both are good (just not together like Katie said, and flashing is always tacky). Oh, and for the holiday decorating record, projectors are the worst! (even worse than the big blow up snowman snow globes…)
White lights only.
I like multi-colored lights, especially when they are twinkly and blinky. This year DH bought some blue icicles which I thought would be completely weird, but they look pretty on the house – frosty and icy and festive.
I prefer white lights after a traumatic childhood of holiday decorating. We had this big barrel of holiday decorations that my mom had collected over the years. We had the same colored lights and silver tinsel garland for my entire childhood/teenage/college years. I always thought our tree looked so tacky. She would never let me get white lights, so I swore when I was old enough my tree would be decked out in white! Victory at last!
white lights for the outside. coloured lights for the tree.
I’ve always decorated my place (inside and out) with simple white lights. However, for as long as I can remember, my grandparents used the big, multi-colored strands for their exterior decorating–so the sentimental side of me loves these, too!
We use both. White outside and for our bedroom tree, and multi for our big trees. Our ornaments are all colors, shapes and sizes, especially this year, with the lower third of the tree needing non-breakable ornaments. The higher branches are decorated with our glass ornaments. I would love to do a white and silver look on the big tree someday. Also, my mom did a tree with white lights and dried flowers and fruit one year that was amazing.
I like the amber colored lights too, but have trouble finding them.
I wanted to buy the new LED lights in a tiny faceted globe pattern, but alas, we put so many lights on our trees (seriously, we almost melted the plug in the wall one year!) that shelling out for the LEDs would be just too expensive, but I’ll be out on the 26th searching for some deals on them for next year!
classic white on house and tree. timeless.
We do white on the tree and white outdoors, but this year we’re venturing out and doing a red/white scheme to line our driveway. oooh….daring! :)
I use only white lights because they look like little stars.
white for us.
I think that either can work but whichever you choose should make sense with the rest of your tree decorations. I have a white tree and white lights and it’s lovely.
Clear all the way!!
I’m with the colored lights, it is more fun!
those big ole colored lights remind me of my childhood. got to have them on the tree…
I definitely prefer lots of white lights for outdoor decor.
Inside, I currently have white lights on two trees: a larger, formal one (color scheme, matching ornaments, the whole bit…won it for a steal at a charity auction!) and a smaller white tree with my pink stuff on it in my pink guest bedroom (hubs was so sweet to let me have my way with that room…its a dream, I tell you). However as soon as I get my hands on some of those fat, colored bulbs that remind me of the lights my grandparents had I will put those on a small family type tree where our random collection of ornaments will go. Just like the tree I grew up with.
So I guess I like both!
