Reader Redesign: The Handy Hubby
When we saw Liv’s amazing bathroom transformation, we were super psyched to share her hubby’s handiwork. Here’s her letter:
I love your site. Love love love. My hubs and I are in the process of remodeling our Pink House (PH) in Utah and it’s been a slow and arduous project. My hubs has single-handedly learned so much about everything home-remodel-related that I had to brag and show off his handiwork to you guys. He read a fantastic plumbing book and then redid EVERY SINGLE PIPE in the entire house. The original ones (and I do mean original– 1924) were rusted out, leaky, clogged… blah. So he read about PEX plumbing and degrees of drainage and things I shudder to consider and slaved away in a tiny crawlspace to create a beautiful bathroom for me. It’s not finished yet, but it is practically fully-functional at this stage. There’s just a small leak in the sinks so they’re not running yet. But it’s still amazing!! I can’t believe he did all this and did it so well. While I still get frustrated at times living in a construction site, I’m so grateful for all that’s happening in my little PH.
Thanks for showing your projects and the projects of others. It reminds me to take it slow and that the end of all my remodeling will someday be upon me (I hope!!). Regardless of how long my house takes, I’m always happy to see the progress of others via your site. I need all the inspiration and motivation I can get!! -Liv

OMG!!! I am forever in your debt. We are about to remodel a bathroom – actually starting over from scratch and going to the studs. I have two pedestal sinks and have been searching all over online for creative storage ideas since I won’t have vanities. THOSE CUBBIES ARE FANTASTIC!!

um…I’m afraid I have to question the orange with the blue…is there a Denver Broncos shower curtain in the works?

Hey thanks for featuring my bathroom remodel! I’m glad to see it’s pretty well-received.
I’m not ashamed to admit that I didn’t even know what sport the Broncos play! I had to ask my co-worker. I had no idea they were “football” colors. I like the blue and Kev liked using a complementary color so I just went with orange as an accent. It’s all good.

Very funny Paul. Oh boys can be so sarcastic. But they can also be so handy! Don’t you guys love Liv’s hubby’s handiwork? And as for those colors, John contends that they’re not Bronco colors, they’re UVA colors (his beloved alma mater). Either way we love the blue and orange color combo (we actually worked it into our first apartment in Richmond). Oh the memories. Thanks so much for sharing Liv!

I agree with Paul (I don’t think he was joking.) The after looks cramped and dark. The shower is very small and the sinks are too large. I admit the cubbies are nice, but you sealed up the window!
The blue, while saturated, is still muted enough to definitely NOT evoke the word “hoo” or “bronco” in my mind. Keep up the good work, there’s nothing like putting the finishing touches on a totally-gutted project like that!
Its FABULOUS! Don’t listen to the naysayers, go with what you love and makes you smile! I happen to think the color combo is wonderful and how funny, my Hubby is also a Kev and happens to be just as handy (albeit he needs encouragement now and then:) Ill have to show him this post!
LOVE the Ikea Expedit in a bathroom. So fun! We have one in black in our study.

We’re sure Liv and her handy hubs had a great reason to install a shower as opposed to a tub. As we say, it’s always about designing a home for YOU and the way you live, so whether or not Liv’s design is anyone else’s cup of tea, we think it’s divine and we’re so happy that Liv and her man made their bathroom into a place that works perfectly for them!
We’re over the moon when people share their before & afters with us (and the world!) and we never want to discourage others from submitting them so please remember to keep your criticism constructive.

Your bathroom is fantastic. I love the colors. I painted my husband’s office a blue similar to that and we love it. I also think the Ikea cubbies are great, and am green with envy that you have a bathroom large enough to fit them in.

Thanks guys, I know that the redesign isn’t everyone’s taste! I probably should have mentioned that the window didn’t get sealed up. It still exists on the other side of the bathroom.
Because the house is so old, there weren’t any closests at all. We decided to take a few feet out of the bathroom and bring the back wall forward, which is probably why it appears so cramped. So, behind the wall on which the toilet and shower stand, there is a walk-in closet accessible from the master bedroom. It really works great for us!
We did try to do everything with future buyers in mind, so we knew we took a risk by not putting in a tub. It just would’ve made the room seem so small if that much floor space was taken by a tub. Also, the sinks are actually smaller than standard double-vanities, so we saved space there!
Overall, we’re thrilled that this bathroom makes much better use of space than before. The fixtures in the old bathroom were spaced so far apart and they were so awkwardly placed!
