Burning Question: Spin Cycle?
Ok, we’re back with what’s sure to be another controversial topic: ceiling fans.
Necessary evils? Decorating abominations? Whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em, feel free to sound off.

Here in south Florida ceiling fans are not optional – they are a necessity. I just replaced all the ceiling fans in my house with nice simple white ones that won’t impede on any future decorating changes I might make.

While not always the best design feature in a room, for some of us, fans are essential to comfortable living! In the bedroom, the modern finishing touch seems to be: rip out that fan and hang a unique chandelier! I admit, I drool over the beautiful chandeliers that people are hanging over their beds, but if I got rid of my ceiling fan, my husband and I would have to get separate beds! It’s gotta be nice and cool to sleep!! :) So, one by one, I’m switching out ugly ceiling fans for cool ones like the one in my living room -which scores me all kinds of complements! You can check it out on this link where I posted it on Rate My Space. http://ratemyspace.hgtv.com/snc/ViewItem.aspx?pguid=6db6be3f-1720-4ba3-a081-999042c09b6b&itemguid=ef26135d-aab5-4d65-aadc-261586c8b891
Necessary. They keep air moving and helps reduce heating and cooling costs.
I would avoid ceiling fans like the plague if I could, but the hubby won’t let me. We actually do use ours and appreciate having it, but couldn’t the manufacturers make some that are a little easier on the eyes?
I’ve only ever seen one that I liked. It was on Flip that House last season I think- sort of a mid century mod style with three blades and a brushed nickel center with no light.
I really don’t like how they look, but I love how nice it is to sleep with one… (I just realized how I could have said that same sentence about a million other things… ) So, I think a good compromise would be a fan that you can hide somewhere when not in use and then place on a dresser or whatever for the night.
My dad has always been a huge fan (ha!) of them but didn’t get one until last May. Mom obliged.
Ceiling fans are a must in Texas. They keep the air moving in the home and reduce a/c usage. We are in the process of upgrading our fans from ugly builder basic to sleek and stylish. But get rid of them? No way!
Necessary. We keep our cooling costs so low thanks to these babies (in Georgia, they are a must-have). We were able to find some fairly stylish ones to help merge form and function. I couldn’t live without my fans
I don’t think they are all that bad design-wise. Honestly, places like Lowes and homed depot have really stepped up on supplying fixtures like this that look designer. That being said, in many climates they are necessary, but not necessarily an eye-sore.
Ugly! However we live in south Texas and have one in practically every room. They help big time, but it makes me sad to see.
Necessary. Without a doubt.
Love ‘em!! I have one in my bedroom with a light that dims. My bedroom is on the second floor of my townhouse and it tends to get a little stuffy up there. I love having my window open and the fan on to circulate the air.
I have lived for 15 years in hot, humid Richmond,Virginia without air conditioning to do my part for the environment. Fans make that possible.
People need to realize that reducing our carbon footprint requires some sacrifice. Most people are not willing to do that, sadly.
I have no rpoblem with the way fans look. Form follows function.
Necessary! Especially if you live in the south.
They are a must! I think fans have come a long way and there are definitely chic options available. My husband comments all the time about how much he likes the modern ceiling fan I chose for our bedroom. Now he wishes he’d trusted my impeccable taste ;) and gotten a more modern fan for our living room as well!
The default fan provided in most fabricated homes these days is an eyesore. There are, however, so many new fan designs that this really useful (and eco-friendly) feature can be worked into the overall design of the room. If desired, it can be the focal point/centerpiece. In the winter fans keep air circulating so it doesn’t get very dry in the home, and in the summer it prevents unnecessary use of an air conditioner. I’m a huge fan…get it?! I’m a fan of fans!! Haha…I love puns!
A MUST. I would pass out without the ceiling fans in my little house. I’m counting down the days until my husband and I install one in our living room. It will be such a relief.
We live in Georgia and have a ceiling fan I think in every room in our house except the kitchen and dining room. Down here in the heat and humidity it really isn’t an option!
Depends on where you livem in Florida it is a necessity.
Another shout out from Texas! My mid century home has those horribly inefficient aluminum-framed windows (no seals, no double panes). I can’t afford new windows yet so ceiling fans are a must. This is upsetting when you want cool light fixtures for the eat-in kitchen but have to choose a fan instead. It’s a real challenge to find stylish fans around my $100 price range. Any suggestions?
Jeni krom Kansas, thanks for the laugh. I’m a fan of puns. ;)
We have one in every room (living in Arizona…can’t afford to run the AC as cool as we would want, so this is a good compromise). I really hate the one in the dining room, this is the only one that I think is unnecessary…who wants their food to get cold before you even sit down?
I live in Texas and here they are definitely a must! We have them in every room except the kitchen, dining and bathrooms. I think you can find more stylish options these days.
I do not like them, Sam-I-Am.
I don’t even *see* them any more — we do have one (or two) in every room in our house. From a cheapness perspective (and I AM cheap) you can’t afford not to have them in the South; from a GREEN perspective I don’t see how you could keep a straight face without them almost anywhere you ever need air conditioning.
Heck, we have one in our garage, because of how much time my son spends out there!
Absolute must have. We live in the Phoenix Valley of AZ and our house feels so stuffy if we don’t run them constantly. And quite honestly, I think they look nice too! There are plenty of great styles available. Its easy to find one that fits the style and decor of almost any home.
Design-wise= ugly
Environmentally= MUCH better than a/c
This past summer, we didn’t use the a/c in our bedroom ONCE-the fan over the bed was enough!!
I am a fan-convert.
Necessary. And they don’t have to be ugly. Our living room one is kinda “meh.” — but it’s very unobtrusive, you hardly even notice it. Our bedroom fan is actually rather nice-looking.
They are a must here in Florida. We have one in the living room and matched the wood on the fan blades to our wood floors. It looks great against the white ceiling too!
As long as they fit in with the rest of the decor I don’t mind them. I think they look best in rooms with a cathedral or very high ceiling tho. I live in New England and this past summer we did use the one in the master bedroom quite frequently.
Love sleeping under one! If you go to Melissa’s site to see hers – we just bought two of those for our new sunroom. Hard to find attractive ones and those were the only ones we could find that weren’t $300!
Decorating abominations! at least for me…
Our new home is under construction, and the floor plan included ceiling fans in both the dining room & living room but I put a stop to that. I really don’t mind them in the master bedroom & guest bedrooms but absolutely not downstairs! We already arranged for them to put up a chandelier and another fixture insted.
Very necessary. They help us keep our cooling costs down and are a must have here in Arkansas.
Definitely a necessary evil…When we moved into our house there were ugly gold fans in the rooms. We updated them with brushed nickel fans to keep up with the times! I would love to have a beautiful chandelier or pendant light hanging from my ceilings, but you can’t beat the money a fan saves. This summer (we live in IL) we were able to use the air conditioning for a total of 2 weeks. The rest of the time we had the windows open and the fans on. Yea, we liked that bill! I also like them hanging from my ceiling instead of having to invade my closet space with the free-standing ones.
I don’t necessarily hate they way they look, but there are certainly some abominations out there. And then there’s the one in the photo you posted, which I happen to think is quite lovely. I think they look better in high-ceiling-ed rooms – I do HATE a ceiling fan against an 8′ ceiling. It feels so claustrophobic.
Hubby and I have been searching for the right fan for our bedroom – a must since we’re on the second floor and it gets so dang hot up there, and we really want to cut down that a/c bill.
I was watching Divine Design and they had a fabulous ceiling fan. It depends on your location on whether it is a good or bad thing. However, there are so many chic options and it helps with being green, I would find it hard to say that it is a bad thing.
I can’t find the show or a fan that is the same, but here is the idea. However, it had two parts, on opposite ends.

I live in the pacific northwest in a rented condo. If this place were mine, I would definitely replace the chandelier in the diningroom and the overhead light in the master bedroom with lighted ceiling fans. The temps here border on uncomfortable in the summer months… not quite hot enough for a/c, but too warm for simply running a floor fan.
I don’t think they’re all that bad, really. Yes, the older ones can be ugly, but nowadays they are making some that look nice. But, I’ve always lived in the south and I’ve never been in a house that didn’t have them.
See, there is a difference between a ceiling fan (like you pictured) and a ceiling fan/light fixture. Ceiling fans do not look bad and can even add a little british colonial vibe depending on your style. However a ceiling fan that includes a light fixture? Horrible. The light looks like a wart stuck on the bottom of the fan or the even worse glass bell shades. I understand the need for a fan but (excepting renters) can’t we make a little effort and add additional electricity for a separate ambient light source. Or lamps, or sconces, or recessed lights.
And in the kitchen and dining room…ridiculous.
Ryan~Funny you say that about the wart or bell light fixture. My cousin calls our fans “madre con leche” fans. She says the light fixture reminds her of a breast full of milk. I still crack up every time I think about it. But sadly, we use them for lighting too!
Yes. a must here in Texas with it being so warm all year. Still searching for sleeker, more modern fans (that don’t resmble airplane propellers) to replace the 5 dated ones that came with my house.
@Ryan – why can’t someone have both? I use table lamps as well at the overhead light which came with this rental. Same could be done with a light/fan ensemble.
In the house I did own I had spotlights flush mounted to light between the stacks of my library shelves, the ceiling mount on a rheostat to create ambience, and a freestanding light beside the overstuffed armchair where i sat for reading. Nowhere is it written that there has to be a single light source in a room whether it is part of a ceiling ceiling fan or a mounted light fixture.
We love sleeping with our fans on – however we’ve been in our house for 1 1/2 years and I haven’t put one in the Master yet, because I haven’t found one that I love. My husband would kill me if we didn’t get one, after all, we already paid for the wiring.
I actually don’t think ceiling fans are that bad. There are a lot of really stylish ones. Unfortunately, the one in our kitchen is not stylish. It is definitely an eyesore, but very helpful for circulating the air and keeping our electric bill down.
They are necessary in the Tampa Bay area of Florida where i live. However, spend some cash on something well built and designed I say. If I see yet another $19.99 ugly white Walmart type fan in a house I will scream. There are nice neutral options (like the one you picture here) and people need to put some more effort into the fan choice.
I replaced brand new white fans in my house because they were the cheapest things ever and they looked it. Sure they were white and neutral but they were cheap and we all knew it.
We just got a beautiful ceiling fan for our bedroom. It is a dark wood with four blades and a soft frosted glass globe. It is comtemporary enough to match our dark wooden bedroom suite and dosen’t look like the fans in my parents house. We love it too for the remote for the light and the fan speeds. We got it at a Ferguson store for super cheap too!
i wish there was a way to revive the old “burning question” posts so that new readers that don’t go back and read old posts would answer, too! (something like bumping a forum post would be so awesome!!!!)
for me ceiling fans are a must for some rooms not for others. we’ve had one in our dining room for years????? dining room? to cool the food when you eat? we only ever used it when we mopped the floor to help them dry more quickly…. in our recent makeover that’s one of the first things we replaced! with a triple pendant… LOVE it!
as for the three bedrooms (2 of which are used as a (1)computer room and (2) Xbox room… they are a must! the MB gets warm in the summer (we’re in the desert) and it’s wonderful to sleep under! the other 2 rooms also get warm… even moreso from the electonics… computers… tv…. etc…. so in the spring, summer, and fall the fans get used a LOT!
we just replaced the Xbox room fan with a very cool, modern style that matches the room and use the room perfectly! the other 2 rooms we’re working on getting less of eyesores!
