Christine, Could you please share where you purchased your sofa? I really love the lines. Thanks! BTW, your implementation of Sherry's mood board is great!

Hey Jani,
I don't know if you've checked out our House Tour tab up near our header, but if you do you'll see that our den used to have dark wood paneling AND red brick- the total jackpot for a dark dungeon of a space. So we're experts when it comes to lightening and brightening. And it's super simple. Here are our fail safe instructions to perfectly painted paneling:
1. Prime with an oil based primer. This is a non-negotiable step as it will keep everything evenly toned and keep the oil/glue/everything else from bleeding through the paint. One coat should do the trick, but be sure to use a brush or a specially textured roller to get in all the cracks of the paneling for a flawless finished product.
2. Paint. It's that easy! You can use two coats of regular latex based paint and you're good to go.
We're actually not experts on tones of white, but we've heard great things about Benjamin Moore's White Dove. We actually painted our paneling a warm cream (Wishes by Glidden) so that the baseboards, moldings and the crown pop with subtle contrast (they're painted the generic semi-gloss white trim paint that we get by the gallon at Lowe's). We're really happy with the light and airy result.
Hope that helps. Happy painting!
xoxo,
Sherry

I also have wood paneling, but it's in our bedroom and makes it seem like a dungeon instead of a retreat. You mention painting all of their paneling white--there are so many white paints out there. Is there one that you like best or that you think would work particularly well with paneling? Which kind of sheen do you think would work best? Also, I have begun painting the paneling, but find that the paint sticks unevenly in the cracks between sections. Should I caulk all of the cracks first or just not worry about it? Also, how do you recommend preparing the wood for painting? Thanks so much and I totally enjoy (and learn a lot from) your blog!

Christine,
FABULOUS! We're so excited that you're so excited. I must admit that your room was one of our all-time favorites. And we think just painting the wood alone will completely transform the space. Oh and we're so happy to hear that you already ordered the rug. It's a total classic and we can't wait to see it in the room. Thanks so much for your sweet response and of course we'd be happy to do more of your rooms after this one's done. Can't wait to see oodles of after pics!!!
Great ideas and solutions for the room but I think there could be a better choice for the side table. The ikea table is campy, and cheap but it also looks cheap. Have fun with your new room design Christine.

I have been lurking on your blog for quite some time and thoroughly enjoy all the great renovation and design tips you share. I also adore your home albeit it is very different from my own design style, which can be summarized as bold, bright, and eclectic. This moodboard is different from the beachy-chic you guys do so well, but I love it! The contrast of the green-gray with the hot and light pinks is brilliant. Oh, and I have that exact $5 throw pillow from walmart. Love how kitschy it is.

Keep up the fabulous job! Your blog is one of my all-time favorites.

I LOVE what you came up with! You nailed it while coming up with ideas that hadn't occurred to me. My wood-wood-wood problem is solved, as is my need for a stylish-but-not-trendy rug. My husband has already been informed of the painting and the rug has been ordered! I'll send you the "afters" ASAP (I'm figuring 4 weeks-ish).

Thanks again!

Christine

P.S. Now you've got yourself roped into some more of my rooms once this one is finished!

Yay! So glad you guys liked our latest moodboard- it was super fun to move into a different design "area." And eeks about the palate/palette spelling issue! Thanks for the double heads up! I'll do my absolute best to absorb that fact (sometimes I just make spelling mistakes over and over and over again, like when I was nine and I thought the term "psyched" was spelled "siked" and I spelled it wrong in every yearbook... talk about embarrassing).
