The funny thing is that I don't think you missed a thing. We used to introduce regular features as if they'd always been here and they always would be (now we take more time to establish that they're new and we're trying something fresh). But clearly from the way I started that inaugural design dilemma I thought I could establish that they'd be a weekly feature without really dwelling on the fact that it was the first one (maybe in an attempt not to make too big of a deal out of the concept in case it failed or something?). So odd!

Did I miss something? I've been reading your archives from the beginning and this seems to be the first "Design Dilemma" that I have run across. Were there more before this one? How did I miss them? How did they start, etc.

Unfortunately since it takes some time and effort to put our plan into action (and to remember to snap follow up pics and send them our way) we don't always receive full after photos or descriptions to share in a follow up post about the room's big makeover. But whenever someone does send them our way you can check 'em out right here on the blog (not only do we publish the updated info but we link the original post, like this one, to the finished room post so it's always easy to find). Hope it helps!

I'm having trouble finding the "after" pics. Are those available somewhere? I'd love to see how Manisha incorporated your plan.

Hey Jessica,

Hmm, your kitchen would probably look great with the same (or a slightly lighter or darker) neutral tone that's in your family room so think about expanding the same color or sliding up or down on the paint swatch to make things feel open and maximize the flow. You could also definitely go for a soft gray-blue kitchen paint color like ours (Glidden's Gentle Tide) which ties in perfectly with the colors in the nearby family room. It looks great with white cabinets! Hope it helps.

I just have a question. My color scheme in my family room is so close to this it's crazy. And now we're ready to move on and paint our kitchen. I'm having trouble deciding on a color. Our family room is open to our dining/kitchen. Our walls are a sage/tan in the family room, and right now we have white walls/cabinets in the kitchen. Any suggestions? I love your kitchen color! Just not sure it would flow well with the blue accents.

Hey Greg,

Good question! We have seen it done (although we don't have direct experience with it) and the key is usually notching out the baseboard so the fireplace can lay flat against the wall and look seamless. Now suggestions on brands though, maybe just try googling for a local place and dropping in to see some in person? Hope it helps!

Hi Sherry,
Do you know anyone who has ordered a 'pre-made' fireplace surround and install it themselves?
Any recommandation(s) as far as manufacturers/ suppliers?
Thanks,
Greg

Thanks Manisha! The illogical person in me hoped for a super easy DIY project - but a contractor sounds like a much better approach. It looks fabulous!
