As long as there's no earthly way the fire could jump up and catch the tree on fire- it's not a problem at all if some leaves or buds drop from the tree and make their way into the firepit from time to time. I've been trying to convince my hubby that we need a fire bowl in our front yard. There is a huge copper one shown in the slideshow of new summer stuff on the ikea website, but of course it isn't available anwhere on their website.
