Coffee (Table) Talk
Always one to spice it up around the house, I wasted no time giving our living room’s $30-thrift-store-find-of-a-coffee-table a lighter look for the warmer weather. Here’s the old bookish, low-profile version:
And here’s the new lighter, more reflective version:
I like exposing more of the glass tabletop for a simpler (and easier to dust) silhouette. And two stacks of books on the bottom shelf really balance the oversized vase that might otherwise look too big for the table. For a finishing touch, the sculptural white shell ball and antler candlestick add some interesting lines without overwhelming.
And I even got to have some fun with a knife to pull the whole thing together…
When I realized I didn’t have a pillar candle around the house I took a regular old kitchen knife to a much wider 4 inch votive candle and after a little slicing I was left with the perfect little pillar to top off the tablescape. Just call me MacGyver. Anyway, whaddya think?

that dog is so funny! photogenic would be an understatement… always a treat to see him in your pictures!
Yup, he thinks he’s America’s Next Top Model Chihuahua. You should see him work a room. He is the Cindy Crawford of dogs.

I LOVE the big vases. Just the right shade of blue, when the light hits it. Did you get that rug at JC Penney? I think I was looking at one just like it online the other day.
Maria- The antler candlestick was a gift from West Elm, and while I no longer see it on their website I wonder if you can find it on ebay or something? Happy hunting…
Kelli- Yup, that’s the first home purchase we ever made from JC Penney and we weren’t disappointed. The subtle x-pattern (echoed in our x-based side tables) is just the right amount of detail and the rug itself is really well made (complete with a textured backing to keep it from slipping around). We googled the term “jc penney coupon code” to score free delivery and 15% off our purchase. You know we’re always on the hunt for a good bargain…

I love the natural shape of the vase and the icy blue of it reminds me of the ocean.
Your puppy is so darn cute. He looks well-bahaved. :)
That table was an excellent thrift store find! Lucky you-guys!
The new arrangement is excellent, totally light and fresh and perfect for summer.
I also wanted to thank you for your post about the capiz light fixture. It’s had been in and out of my West Elm shopping bag for a while — I kept backing out. But picturing all the YHL readers rushing over to buy it on Friday finally spurred me to action and I took the plunge. It arrived today and it’s AMAZING. It’s wider than it looks in the picture and we’re SO happy with it! Thanks for the kick in the pants I needed!
The vase on the table as well as the taller vase on the floor next to the chair are both from zgallerie (they were fabulous b-day gifts from John’s adorable family). You can check ‘em out here:
